If the #1 team in state can't stop h-j....who will?
bullets13 replied to hjsc's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
you were at the game oldtimer? i wasn't, but i've heard from several people, both HJ fans and otherwise who were there who said it was bad. it seems from your posts that you feel the refs never have any hand in what happens, and that it's never a valid reason for a team to lose. come back to the real world, where refs occasionally do cheat, and where teams occasionally do lose from it. I'm not saying this happened at the HJ game, but you make it sound like there's no way it did happen, could've happened, or ever will happen. you have to remember that the HJ fans love their team, and they're going to defend their team when they feel they've been cheated. don't criticize them for that. regardless, the game was meaningless, and the district now has to deal with a pissed off HJ. -
Ben Broussard (HJ) traded to Rangers

he's a good player. he's never really gotten the chance to play everyday due to suspect hitting vs. lefties, but i think if he gets the chance to do it, he'll be alright. i've followed his career since i graduated with his younger brother, and he's pretty solid. he'll probably never be an allstar, but he's more than capable of .270-.280 with 15-20 HR's and 80-90 RBI's. -

well, the zebras had a hand in it, if i heard right. regardless, if HJ plays them again on a neutral court, with unbiased refs, i'll place my bet on HJ. in my opinion, cheated or not, this is a great time for HJ to lose a game. now that they won't have to worry about that long winning streak, they can refocus and concentrate on bringing home another district crown. -
22-4a all-district picks/LIST POSTED!!!!
bullets13 replied to ozensfinest's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
that's the whole point of my post. i'm not saying that vidor had a team full of superstars, but in any district, the list of superstars is pretty short. it's clear with this many players being honored, above average was surely, in many cases at least, good enough to get recognition. if that's the case, every team could have at least 5 or 6 guys being named (and obviously some could have 15). in all honesty, i'd be ok with vidor only getting two reps if the all-district teams were smaller and more indicative of the top talent in the district. there's no doubt that just about every player named is a solid and talented player, but in a district where solid players are a dime a dozen on the better teams, you need to raise the bar when giving out awards. -

you disagree with the whole post or just the vidor comment? as for that, it's just absurd to me that one team has their entire team elected, and another has just 2 players. in all fairness, if this district didn't pick 100 players, i wouldn't have a problem with vidor only being represented twice. if this were an elite honor, then the top two players off of the last place team would seem fair. but as it is, there are so many players that the 1st and 2nd place team had basically their whole team selected! pretty much every player that played on a top 5 team who had any type of decent stats at all was mentioned. i find it hard to believe that there wasn't another player anywhere on vidor who didn't have the stats required to get named. lumberton and dayton had about the same number of players left off their teams that vidor had chosen. it's an example of saying "vidor was the worst team in the district, so you have to be extremely good to get a nod, but lumberton and dayton were great teams, so anyone who had a solid season for them is in." I'm not knocking lumberton or dayton. they had great years, and have great players. I'm really only knocking the system of which those two teams were beneficiaries, making it necessary to use them as examples. -
fairness is certainly the issue. i'd rather see a couple of uneducated novices go out and do their best reffing a game than to see an experienced official call a biased game. i think your idea of having a head official watch the game is a good one, too. it will cost some extra dough, but it will work to ensure that these games are called fairly and accurately. of course, it would be important that the head official not be from the same place as the game officials.

is this a must win for lcm on the 18th
bullets13 replied to 24 over par's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
i'm not gonna say it's a must-win. everyone is going to lose to ozen, so that's not a big deal to have that loss on their record. i'm gonna say it's a should-win though. i think lcm is the better team, and will be very dissapointed if they lose to dayton. -

i can remember when making all-district was still an honor. 69 players on the first two teams, and this not counting the mvps. God knows how many honorable mentions there are, but i bet there's more than there are on either the first or second team, which means you're looking at probably 100 or more kids making all-district. if you figure this 11 starters x 2= 22 starters per team. 22 starters per team x 8 teams= 176 starters. I'm also not going to try to figure in the dozens of two-way players in the district. well over half the starters in the district made all-district. You could be an honorable mention team running back and be the 8th or 9th best back in the district. maybe they should change the name to "all the district". on top of this, there was an unfairly large amount of lumberton and dayton players on these teams. i agree with the fact that they went the farthest, and were two very good teams, and should thus be represented as such. however, putting their whole teams on all-district is kind of silly. Vidor only had two picks, which is a travesty. i'm no vidor fan, and in fact did not at all watch that team at all this year, and i can still say with certainty there were more than two players deserving of all-district recognition on vidor's football squad. to me, districts need to cut down on their all-district honors. this isn't little league, or little dribblers, where everyone needs a trophy. Bring the honor back to all-district honors! Cut the teams down so they actually mean something! -

maybe because you're the type of person who WOULD ask. the only posts i've ever seen you make on here were talking about how good you were, or were seeking praise for yourself. if you take that attitude onto the field, i can imagine why other coaches wouldn't be too high on you. -
Soccer All District Question(s)

i think i will, actually. -
it's really hard to ask highschoolers to stay focused and fight through it when they're getting blatantly cheated. i was a pretty levelheaded player in my day, but at the age of 16 it was pretty difficult for me to get my head back in a game where i felt like i was being cheated. that's kind of an x-factor in this debate. one can argue that a player should be able to overcome a bad ref, but at this age, all the kids have to play for is their love of the game and school pride. a bad call is to be expected once in awhile, but a poorly-called game is a disservice to young men who are fighting their hearts out to win a game for their school. if you're getting frustrating all night by the refs, it's going to lead to turnovers, missed freethrows (if you can get a call), and missed shots. this is true in college and the pros, but especially in HS basketball where these players are still just kids.
-
i agree that no matter what the refs do, there are things you could've or could've not done to improve your chances... but refs can cost you a game. say they are calling cheap fouls and keep your best player out of the game for most of the 1st half and then foul him out early in the second. or call 20 more fouls on one team than the other, leading to 15 extra points from the freethrow line for one team who should not have gotten them. there are things that refs can do that affect the entire game, and sometimes so much so that no matter what you could've done better, they cost you the chance to win.

Amen! I don't see the point of going back and drudging up dirt on people who were using steroids several years ago. Many players did, and were kind of even expected to, and nobody enforced any steroid-related rules then. I think it's great that MLB is taking steps to eliminate steroids now, but i don't see what will be gained by this modern-day "Mitch" hunt. You shouldn't go back and punish players for what they've allegedly done in the past. In most cases, there's little or no physical proof anyway. And as for the astros signing tejeda... who cares? Maybe if they signed him the day after the report came out, but not several days before. Should they be ashamed of all of the hundreds of players in their system through the years that have used steroids? For a long time they were a generally accepted part of the game. Now that they aren't, show me a current positive drug test, and i'll show you grounds for a suspension. -
that's a pretty damn impressive start. i'd love to see them go deep in the playoffs.

i went last year at HJ and it was pretty insane. packed to capacity and it felt like it was about 110 degrees inside. it's a hell of an atmosphere if you can get a seat. -

i think HJ is obviously the better team, but silsbee's athletic, and they've got a good season going for them so far. Also, they have a lot of motivation to beat HJ. I'm not saying that Silsbee is in the same class as HJ in talent, but they're the best team HJ will face in district, and they're also going to play harder than anyone else when they play HJ. All i was really stating is that silsbee is the one team that might actually give HJ a competitive game come district. -
what's HJ's record now?

i tried to answer the poll question, but i couldn't decide if i wanted to put that they were YES a threat, or NO, not a joke.
