Coach Pickens coached at Liberty prior to Hardin. Had a son, JR, who was a pretty good athlete...great pitcher for the Liberty Panthers.

I knew about a player once that wanted to continue his baseball career in college. His high school coach was new and did not have many, if any contacts. The player made calls and contacts on his own, and his coach made calls and contacts on his behalf. The two of them beat the bushes to get a place to play. Finally, the player did get an opportunity at a jr. college. He was not happy at that jr. college, so began to look for another place to play the following year. It was into July before he received that offer. He called that coach several times to check on his chance to go there. From there, two university recruiters saw him pitch and offered him scholarships at their respective universities. He selected the one he preferred and was an intrumental part in winning the conference tournament and making the NCAA Tournament his senior year. I said all this to say that you need to seek a place and stay after it...there is someplace out there for you, and then you make good of your opportunities. There are other stories like this one...walk-ons, etc...just keep after it. Good luck.

I agree with you, hj_hawk_60, and it was Kirkland's first year there, I believe.

Same thing happened at the 4A and 5A level...tournament champion had 7 players on the all-tourney team.

I'm thinking another tough, tough year upcoming in District 21 3-A!

Oooo...yes, that last high school game was worse emotionally than high school graduation! However, driving away after leaving that player at college was another tough, tough moment to handle. Good luck to all you graduating senior baseball players!

HJ Hawks Coaches and Players, thank you for a most enjoyable season of baseball. It was so exciting to watch you guys mature as players throughout the season. What an INTENSE ride into the playoffs you had. Every game the second half of the season had playoff implications...must win games. Your play was solid, and it lead to great rewards. The weekend was tough, but you hold your heads high...you did a tremendous job! Seniors, super job! Four years...four head coaches, I understand. Good luck in your future endeavors. Underclassmen, come back strong next year and compete like the champions you are. It was a thrilling ride.

Great ballgame...congratulations, Hawks! After what was an emotional loss for Jasper, the team was out on their field after the game playing with young children. The children were getting at-bats, name being announced on PA system, running bases, mixing with the Bulldogs, etc. Great sight to see. What a classy act. The children were loving it! What character! Enjoyed the baseball game. A little of everything in this one.

Whew! Knew something must have been happening for someone in the 4th and/or 5th b/c updates were lagging. Sure glad HJ got out of those messes!

I didn't either, but it sure is great! The game is called baseball..."on any given day." Who knows? Don't you just love this game?

I agree with the previous post. It takes a bit of time, normally, for a new coach to come in and establish his program, learn the student athletes, and student athletes learn the coach. Lumberton will build on what they have now, develop, and turn things around. Good luck and keep on working!
