Houston Yates 81 Hardin-Jefferson 69/FINAL

Ridiculous. I got the whole Yates hater thing the other day when I said there were probably at least a half dozen teams in the metroplex that would be a solid favorite over the Lions. Again, that’s not a slam on Yates or anyone else. It’s a statement on how unbelievably loaded 4-A region 2 is this year. I would have to be reminded of a year where one region in one class had so many teams capable of winning it all. I don’t remember one. And I definitely root for Houston basketball over Dallas. But there’s a difference between rooting and reality sometimes. -
TVC, I don’t know if you’ve ever had the misfortune of being on an investigation quite like this one. I’m sure you’ve investigated other horrendous acts though. I can’t imagine how you guys are able to do your jobs and do them well when dealing with such evil. There is simply no way that I see that it doesn’t take something from you. For many of us, it is heartbreaking enough to see pictures of a precious little girl and merely hear about what happened. There is absolutely no way I could do your job. And for that, we should all be eternally grateful.

“Hate” gets thrown around too much these days. Just because you aren’t rooting for a team in a certain game or don’t think a team is as good in a particular year as some of their fans doesn’t mean you “have hate” for that team. If Yates wins the region, I will be pulling for them at state. I was pulling for HJ last night but thought they were a long shot. In other words, I thought Yates would likely win. And I have nothing but “love” for the Hawks and their coach. And I have nothing but love for some of Yates former players that I’ve known. Jacob Young played there fairly recently was a heckuva player and a good kid and I’ve known and been close to Mitch from last year’s team since he was a 12 year old in Louisiana. Skin is awfully thin with some of the Yates’ fans apparently. -

Oh you’re right. So 3 of the 5 accolades he listed have asterisks. Got it. -

If Silsbee 3 peats this year, I truly believe they were a Devon McCain injury away from matching Yates’ 4 championships...in 4 years. But a 3 peat will place this team firmly in the history books. As for high school “national championships” (and no offense to North Shore football this year), fairy tales are nice. But real hardware is won on the court (or field). If you didn’t play for it, you didn’t earn it. Just my opinion. -

I wasn’t talking about the teams with Rickie Winslow, Michael young or his boys, Melvin Swift, etc. I’m talking about this year’s team. I just don’t think this is close to one of JY’s better teams, and 4A is ridiculously deep this year. -
I will be in the middle of those hell raisers from Beaumont

And speaking of Clay Davis, he has long been an underrated coach in our area in my opinion. Not that I think most people don’t think he’s a good coach. I think a lot of folks don’t realize just how good he is. He has always been on my short list of best coaches in our area. And more impressive to me than his basketball acumen is the man behind the coach. I enjoy sitting around a gym talking hoops with Clay. And it’s evident how bright a basketball mind he has. But as my wife and I watched Channel 12’s coverage last night, we saw Coach Davis interviewed. She commented about how upset and emotional he was (which impressed her more than his ability to coach Xs and Os). And it wasn’t about losing a game - it was about a season and, for some, a career being over. Because he truly loves and cares about his kids. HJ is very fortunate to have him guiding and molding their young men. -

Yes, yes and yes! -
Whatever the main gym is. We are the second game of a double header with BU-Clear Lake playing the first one.

This Yates team would have to play at least 3 teams who are decidedly better to go “all the way.” That is to say, they would need to play their best 3 times and have their opponent play subpar. In that respect, I guess they are “capable” of doing it but still highly unlikely in my opinion. And lest I be accused of being a “Yates hater,” let me clarify. I’m not a huge fan of the style of basketball Coach Wise’s teams play but I respect his coaching and understand its effectiveness with the depth of athletes he has. They will consistently pound lesser teams, and will nearly always make regionals. But when you hit teams who can match your talent and play with more discipline, you’re often going to run into problems. This is not one of the better Yates teams I’ve seen although they are obviously good. And in a down year for the classification, maybe they would be one of the favorites. But this is not a down year. This is one of the deepest years for Class 4A I’ve seen in some time. The flip side is that the benefit all non-Region 2 teams have is only one Region 2 team can make it to SA... -
Van Vleck’s strength is their length. Not as quick or as athletic as Diboll. They rely a lot on their 6-6 big. Absent extraneous factors (i.e., foul trouble), OF should have the opportunity to advance.

The stupidity is ALMOST as offensive to me as the deception. Sometimes cases beg to be made into an example. This one is crying and screaming to be one. And the waste of people’s time and resources, just wow.

Hold up, I’m not reading this entire thread but am I hearing correct that this Einstein paid the stagers with a check?? Smh

You may be right. The guy seems like a nutcase. Could be an act though. If so, there are good mental health professionals in this area that are used to seeing it. So much truth. That might be the best justice of all. They don’t use medicine to put you to sleep in gen pop.

HJ is a lot better than a lot give them credit for. I’ve been impressed every time I’ve seen them. May be the third best team in the region to be honest. -

Control the pace Hawks! Make them play your game and you can do this! -
Yates doesn’t have McCain either. Or Adams. Or Bush. All 3 better than Yates’ best guard imo.

I agree. I was at that game and United looked dreadful (not entirely a shock being their first game ever as a school). And lost by 2.
-
I am rooting hard for the Hawks. It’s a shame two of the best teams in the region have to play in the second round. If the Hawks can be extremely disciplined and not fall into Yates’ playground game, you never know. I am confident HJ will be extremely well coached and play their hearts out. Go Hawks!

[Hidden Content] Met this afternoon with one of the investigating detectives on another matter. He was understandably and visibly shaken by the whole ordeal. There are some things in this world I will never understand. The only solace is that she is now in a better place than any of us and will not have to endure what could have been a torturous childhood. Prayers for the rest of her family and the good men and women in blue who are charged to do a job none of us would envy. I don’t know how they do cases like this to be honest.

I knew going in that Diboll was the worst possible matchup in that district for OF but still thought it should be around a 10 pt game. Then the Bobcats played as poorly as I’ve seen them for 2.5 quarters (credit to the Lumberjacks, their defense was smothering all night). Still you don’t see many games where a team turns it over 36 times and still wins. Just did an extremely poor job of taking care of the ball. By comparison, in the two games vs East Chambers (whose defense is easily the best they’ve seen this year), OF turned it over 21 and 24 times respectively.
