Port Arthur Memorial 67 Humble 56/FINAL
TxHoops replied to WOSgrad's topic in High School Boys Basketball
Lancaster has been down this year with 13 losses. But after beating Waxahachie, they are definitely peaking at the right time. Midlothian’s Kaden Archie will be the best player at that regional, and I suspect the winner of their game with Prosper (who is also very tough this year) will be the favorite to beat the winner out of Lancaster and Mt. Pleasant. But you’re right, Lancaster is always one to look out for. -
Since the other movie thread got some interest, and I was listening to a sports radio program driving back from Beaumont discussing sports movies, I thought it might be fun to have a thread dedicated to your favorite sports movies. I am a basketball guy, so that plays into my tastes but it was evident in making this list that baseball (by far my least favorite of the 3 major sports) easily makes the best movies. Here are my top 15, along with a favorite scene from each.: 15. Bad News Bears - The original of course, just a classic from my youth: 14. Major League (Uecker steals the show): 13. Brian's Song - maybe the first sports movie I ever saw so I'm a bit sentimental here. Still, a great cast and this speech gets me to this day: 12. Tin Cup - I loved this one and this scene was just fantastic to me. This is the first of a few Ron Shelton movies on my list, arguably the most prolific sports film maker, and the first a few Kevin Costner movies, arguably the most prolific sports movie actor: 11. Bull Durham - Another Shelton/Costner classic: 10. White Men Can't Jump - I probably would move this movie up several spots because it's one of the few I have saved on my DVR. Love the dialogue in the movie and love the subject matter obviously. Rated lower because realize cinematically, it's not as good and Rosie Perez's voice is one of the most annoying of all time [Hidden Content] 9. Jerry Maguire - just a great movie overall imo: 8. The Natural - a bit of a schmaltzy movie but I like schmaltzy: 7. Caddyshack - technically a sports movie: 6. Remember the TItans: 5. Rudy - iconic scene from an iconic movie: 4. Rocky - arguably the greatest sports movie of all time (other than my #1) but I like my top 3 better: 3. Field of Dreams - anyone whoever "had a catch" with their father or son should get "hit" by this one: 2. Hoosiers - can't flip past the movie when it's on: 1. Hoop Dreams - easily the best sports movie of all time IMO. 3 hours and I can still watch it and be enthralled the entire time. It doesn't really have that one scene though so here is simply the trailer. If you haven't seen it, I think it's still available on YouTube in it's entirety. Highly, highly recommend it: [Hidden Content]

The Rev. Billy Graham, prominent Christian evangelist, dead at 99
TxHoops replied to LumRaiderFan's topic in The Locker Room
His autobiography had maybe the greatest title of all time, even if borrowed from a famous hymn, Just As I Am. Seems perfectly fitting. Most today also don't realize the major role he played in the civil rights movement. RIP Rev. Graham. And "well done, good and faithful servant." -
Cold hearted bas$#@$#$!

I don’t know what you’re seeing but there’s two angles. I agree he leaves the floor (going backwards not up) when a player runs into him. He didn’t get a shot off, up or otherwise because he chose to pump fake with 1.1 seconds left. Gets a player flying into him with approx .2 seconds left and then falls backwards and loses the ball out of bounds after buzzer. Trying to find a shot in there is just trying to find a shot in there. I would argue that without the time factor, still is an awful call because there was NEVER a shooting motion, prior to or during the foul. Only way the kid goes to the line is if it’s a bonus situation, which it wasn’t.
-
This I can buy!
-
He’s never going up. The only shooting motion he makes is on the ball fake. I think you’re right that contact was made with .2 seconds left. He falls backwards and the ball comes out of his hands clearly after the clock reads double zero. Trying to find a shot in there is just...well nvm. I stand by my previous statement.
-
Smh, I stand corrected. How can we expect refs to get a call right when people still butcher calls with video evidence lol?
-
No doubt. DJ has battled injuries since he was a young kid. Here’s hoping he finds a healthy career at Oral Roberts.

Might have to get PETA involved to do that...

East Chambers 62 La Marque 59/FINAL
TxHoops replied to WOSgrad's topic in High School Boys Basketball
Meh, you were a lot better at the end of the year than you were at the Evadale tourney By the way, hbd to my favorite referee. -
Absolutely. And one of the toughest PGs around. But also proof how hard it is to repeat. Falls had everyone back from last year’s championship team.
-
Foul maybe. Shooting foul no. Player pump fakes, gets fouled and drops ball. At best, Tompkins gets an inbound from corner with .2. Botched and botched horribly.

Silsbee 99 Houston Scarborough 76/FINAL
TxHoops replied to WOSgrad's topic in High School Boys Basketball
I will say neither Yates nor Silsbee has a gimme Friday night. Either isn’t ready and none of us will see the matchup we have been waiting all season to see. -
In other news, the other half of the 6A regional finalists from last year, Cy Falls goes down to Sam Houston and Kendric Davis tonight.
-
Wow this is one bitter pill to swallow. Tie game, Bush with foul to give. Tompkins in bounds and Bush player runs into Tompkins’ Eden Holt as time expires. Holt falls and drops ball. Refs give Tompkins three shots to win it. Very close but looks as if contact even came after buzzer I hate referees (except for one who posts here who is actually pretty darn good) [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content]

That would make sense. Probably an incorrect number or something. Or someone left out of book to start game. Those will make you pull your hair out. -
He sure could. Stan had a nice career at Tech as well. The ultimate coach’s kid.

60-48 Titans. 4:29 left -
Wow. Each Deer win has to be a little painful for the Brook. Clear Lake is a solid squad with maybe the best pure scorer in the greater Houston area.

You might not be an expert but you are 100% correct. Any foul where a play is “not made on the ball” is technically flagrant by the rules. -
Never underestimate the heart of a Lion? Good stuff Kountze!

Heckuva run by the Rebels. Tell #2 I’m sure proud of him.

Maybe the best in the state in any classification at controlling tempo. You can beat them, but you have to beat them at “their” game. -

Wow. A lot closer than I expected but counts as much as a blowout. Way to go Bucs! One at a time boys.
