  1. Agreed, no question. Basketball, for reasons stated earlier, is obviously the easiest of the major sports to find success quickly with the right coach. At any level.
  2. Do a little study on the population growth of Aledo and the metroplex in general and see if you can connect those dots.
  3. And @Reagan, I get where you are coming from and I agree with you plenty on the effects a great coach can have on a school. Smalley became the all time winningest coach at OF but you seem to think BC was crazy for hiring him. And your definition of “elite” is a bit nuts buddy. And I mean that in the kindest possible way. If you don’t think Kevin Foster at Big Sandy is “elite” because he doesn’t have a state title, you’ve lost your mind. I could take anyone with an above average basketball IQ to watch BS play and they would agree they are about as well coached as is possible in that sport. He’s better than the majority of college coaches I’ve seen.
  4. I have no idea. But do you honestly believe those schools have a similar talent pool as Bridge City? Comparing Bridge City to those in places is a bit misguided, to be overly kind.
  5. This is tricky for me because I think HE (and others like Briles, Todd Dodge, etc.) could have similar results at Gilmer, Daingerfield, probably Newtons and West Oranges as well. But he can’t do what he’s done at Bridge City or Orangefield. Mr Magoo could walk through the weight rooms at those schools and see there’s a huge difference in the jimmy’s and joes. And football is the most difficult because of the numbers you need. A lot less difficult in hoops where you only need 7-8 dudes to field a team.
  6. Exactly. Nick Saban could coach Bridge City. They ain’t beating Carthage 99 times out of 100. Maybe 100 out of 100 but I hate to ever say anything is impossible.
  7. Comparing Surratt to virtually any HS coach in the country is kind of like comparing an NFL coach to Lombardi or Belichick. Virtually every coach will fall short. Kind of like asking a basketball player why he’s not as good as Jordan or LeBron, or why he doesn’t shoot it as well as Curry.
  8. Apparently Surratt wasn’t interested and BC wanted someone less rapey than your boy Briles.
  9. I think they are pretty close. OF is a bit more but not significant. It’s conceivable Brandon could tell them thanks but no thanks. He has a good thing going there and they love him.
  10. I personally think that hire would make a ton of sense. And he has done a heckuva job at Deweyville.
  11. Or maybe Josh will turn B.C. into a consistent winner like he did at OF. Not like they were world beaters when he took over. Neither are going to win state championships but I bet he improves the program. And as I’ve stated many times, you won’t find a better AD. I personally have nothing but gratitude for the man and hope he has all the success in the world, even if it’s for a rival. Godspeed Coach Smalley. Your work here was much appreciated.
  12. What’s with all this who should play who stuff? Looks to me like it was a very competitive game and both teams should have gotten better from it. If your goal is to win championships, that’s all that really matters from a pre-district game.
  13. Let’s just say one I know very well.
  14. My post wasn't meant as a sleight on any of the current players. I've been very impressed with what I've seen so far. But I do think Whitmire coaching is a very big advantage for them (and sounds like you agree). I've just seen him win a ton of games over the years when he had the worst of it, talent-wise. Including a few against the Bobcats, unfortunately.
  15. That was my dilemma as well. Interesting note on Kountze. Wasn't so long ago that they were pitching a fit about another kid in the district being an illegal transfer (although word on the street was they were doing East Chambers' bidding). Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for the kid, a couple of the other superintendents in the district at the time had known the young man's father for practically his entire life. To the point they let the two complaining schools know they were barking up the wrong tree and squelched it. As anyone knows who knows me, I am all for letting the Kountze kids play. But I am always amused by the hypocrisy in these sorts of thing.
  16. agreed - my top 3 as well. No idea on 4th though. I usually default to Buna though.
  17. For sure. If they had made a bowl game, I would have put them against the crappiest team I could find…
  18. I’ve said for years Whitmire was one of the most underrated coaches in SETX and won a LOT of games with less. Bobcats lose one of their most loaded senior classes I can remember and stand at 13-1 going into district.
  19. I agree. They scare me more than Bama btw. They are also a better team. And Bama will more than have their hands full with Michigan. I’m not sure the final won’t be chalk.
  20. It’s hilarious all the talk on social media is how Bama’s QB is better now, yada yada yada. Which of course is the talking point of all casual fans. The true football folks know Texas won because they won where most football games are won - with the big uglies We whipped their tail in both lines of scrimmage, I’m sure their younguns are better. But our experienced fronts on both sides are still healthy and the best in the country.
  21. Sounds like you’ve seen some good games today.
  22. That’s certainly true. But both of these young men are extremely bright and energetic. I haven’t seen KJ yet with Buna, but I can tell you the level of coaching (in a varsity game) I saw from Remi quite frankly surprised me. And I went in expecting a lot. He is wayyy beyond his years and was doing more than I’ve seen an assistant do 99 percent of the time. Reminded me a bit of a couple of current highly successful coaches when they were assistants at high profile teams in this area. And by the way, kudos to Coach Whitmire for giving Connell that freedom. Of course, he more than anyone knows what he is capable of.
  23. I understand on paper it looked questionable. But I knew what kind of basketball mind KJ has and his passion for the game. And he’s always wanted to coach girls. It was a diamond in the rough situation to me. I also understand how well liked Remi deservedly is there. But I think he will end up being thankful he stayed with boys. I tend to believe things happen for a reason. He’s destined to be a very good one, maybe even a great one.
  24. Yeah, not sure what the thinking is when someone can’t win at a program like U of H. Then again, not sure how much thinking Borne did in general.
