Bill Burr has part of one of his comedy routines about the disparity in pay. It is typical Bill Burr profanity laced but it is (like most comedy) completely accurate.

Part of his routine was, women failed women’s sports because women don’t watch it but blame men for not watching it. Meanwhile women are watching the Kardashians and the Housewife shows who are making money hand over fist and it’s raining money. Women would rather watch other women tearing each other down than watching women coming together as a team to try and achieve a common goal, with his conclusion…… “The Money Listens”

Bill Burr Woman Failed the WNBA on YouTube if someone wants to watch it.

Funny if profanity doesn’t offend you but again, all comedy is based on reality.

Have seen and loved that bit.  He’s absolutely right.  And brings up a more important issue than sold out arenas.  Television eyes.  Until women start watching women’s sports with the same frequency as BRAVO TV, the ladies aren’t getting a big ESPN, TNT or whomever deal.  That’s, of course, why these men are making $40M a year.  It’s not because the owner’s just value them more.

Brittney Griner’s official return to the floor baffles her head coach because it was not a sellout.

I didn’t bring this up about Griner. My point is that the WNBA loses millions of dollars a year as it is not popular.  It only as a subsidiary of the NBA. If it was a regular business or even a professional sports league that lost millions each year, it would have long since folded. It is about the equivalent of a high school JV football team. At least JV has a purpose.

Griner who is obviously a star in the WNBA regardless of her political stance…. but, her coach apparently believed that because she was arrested and in Russia, fans would pack the arena to see her “return”.

Part of the coach’s after game comment was, “How was it not a sellout?”. (In the link posted below)

That is the out of touch part. I am thinking….. go woke, go broke.

The WNBA isn’t losing money because of any agenda. It is losing millions of dollars because it just is not exciting to 99.5% of the public. It is probably subsidized by the NBA just to say there is a women’s league. With that knowledge, the coach thought there should have been an outpouring of support for Griner however.

    Uhhhhh…….. no.

Just started watching a mini-series about the pro women’s soccer team in LA.  Much of the opening episode was about the disparity in pay between men’s and women’s sports.  But I’ve never seen where this isn’t market driven.  The women in basketball can make 10x or more playing overseas, presumably because women’s basketball is more popular there.  I wish they could make more money to play here too but until they figure out how to sell out arenas, it’s not going to happen.

I hope you find out the secrets. And if not, I'll fill you in on the rest of the season when I see you again.

He tried very hard to make me a believer in the extraterrestrial.  If he’s right, I PROMISE you he can’t wait to give me a big ole “I told you so.”  😂

I played against Bryan from the time I was nine in Little Dribbler All Stars until he graduated Buna, always thought very highly of him then.  I expect this to be a great hire!

Who can't get a login?  I know I was locked out for a while and I messaged Aggies on Facebook and he helped me out.

If you have Gmail it tends to get stuck in Spam/Promotions folder.

Top 3 in my all time favorite classes at OF ( right behind the two my kids were in).

Hi, I'm looking for any Boys 15U or 16U  travel basketball teams in either the Beaumont or Lufkin Area. I'm also looking for any Girls 7u or 8u  travel basketball teams in the same areas. Please private message me if you have any information on any. Thank you!

Lawrence does a great job with his guys.  Not sure what he might have available at this point though.  Might be worth reaching out.

OMG. I knew I should have checked on him. I work with a man from Evadale and asked Hagar if he knew him. Of course he did. Our friendship took off from there. I never met the man, now I wish I had. He and I would text occasionally. He told me of his condition and asked me not to mention it. You posted it in the right place.
Even though we may not have met, I feel I know the man. He had a sense of humor that was so enjoyable. We all loved his posts and his “country” humor. He will be sorely missed.
    R. I. P. my friend.

He thought a lot of you as well.  We both mentioned you and LRF often as guys we knew we would like and enjoy their company.  I’m so grateful we met (I think AAW and I met him at the same time during the Evadale tournament years ago).  I was blessed to be able to watch several games with him over the year.  We shared a love of sports and complaining about officiating.

Great idea. Probably should've been locked up until the official announcement anyway. I'm guilty too though.

Hope everyone is happy when the announcement is made. This seems like a home run hire again for OF. Coach Smalley makes this look easy. We'll see soon enough.

He really does.  I think it helps too that he has a reputation as the kind of AD people love to work with.  He genuinely loves all the sports.  Like most Texans (myself excluded), just football the most.  The OF community is blessed to have him.

  8. It is with great sadness I report that Hagar passed last night.  He had been battling cancer for some time, along with his wife of 55 years.  She passed less than 2 months ago, and our buddy just joined her.  He missed her dearly, obviously, and was surely overjoyed to join her.  He had just gotten a positive report but developed an infection this week his body couldn’t fight off.  His daughter reports that he passed peacefully in the night.

Hagar was someone we all enjoyed posting, and he was a great friend.  I met him through this message board, and was blessed to develop a friendship over the past several years.  I debated where to post this (either here, the football board, or the Locker Room), but I feel like this is the one where he posted and enjoyed the most.  He will be deeply missed.  Prayers for his beloved son, daughter and grandchildren.  As you can imagine, he was very proud of them and an incredible dad and grandad to them all.

On a serious note 😂…. What kind of fit is whitmire at orangefield?  From the outside it seems to be a really good choice.

Everyone has their own opinion.  Personally, I love the hire.  Always enjoyed watching his teams play and seems like a great guy.  Glad he’s coming back closer to home.  And I think he only lost to OF once during his time at Buna so happy to see him on the orange bench.

We are out on this blog. We would appreciate people not running peoples names through the mud when they dont personally know them or wont contact them directly to discuss their issues. There are always multiple sides to any story and everyone has their reasons for their actions. Mr. Scales tried numerous times to get a login, but would never get the confirmation email. It became apparent why when the director of this site bad mouthed him and his wife which definitely crossed the line. Mr. Scales contacted him directly on messenger, but he also chooses to not respond. With that being said, he knows who a few of you are and the fake friend part bothers him most, but trying to figure out who you other keyboard warriors are isn't worth the time or the energy. Ghost has worked really hard at his dream and his family has been right there with him every step of the way. The Scales Family only owes that joy to the Good Lord above and not anyone else. They can stand firmly that they are real Christian People, flawed and imperfect but healed by God and knowing he knows the truth of every situation. Until we meet, we will be praying that God removes the hate and malicious intent from your hearts. We want us all to win!

Really good kid from a really good family.  Wish him and the Bobcats well.  And as usual, I really like Smalley’s hire here.  Hope it’s another home run.

I said exactly what I feel about Buna.  It's a community that doesn't produce a lot of elite athleticism.  Your football and track records back that statement up.  So what?  Orangefield, and many other communities, are similar.  To compete and succeed in basketball with lesser athletes is commendable.  Still think that is a complement.

Or maybe you think your hometown is a hotbed like Miami/Dade County?  Maybe the coaches have underachieved with the abundance of talent?  I think most people probably share my opinion.

I would say Orangefield and Buna have very similar gene pools.  OF has more students so they should win slightly more theoretically.  But I think Whitmire only had one loss against OF during his tenure at Buna.  I’m not positive on that but I believe that’s correct or at least close.

Alex is one of the best all around athletes to ever walk the halls in Buna. I’d say you’re probably right. 100% agree on the last part. Their parents are some of the best you’ll ever find.

Yeah his athleticism was what set him apart.  All 3 had nosebleed basketball IQs (and IQs in general from what I hear) and could shoot the leather off the ball.

Graduating a lot and losing the last Connell. No more in the chamber unless Manny can convince a woman to like him enough 😂 Then we’d have to wait another 14 years though.

What a run for the Cougars with those three.  How would you rank them (for fun)?  I would go Alex, Remi, then Garrison.  But full disclosure, I by far have seen the least of Garrison. You usually don’t see the middle kid being the best for whatever reason but that’s where I feel the strongest.  Much less confident ranking the other two.  All three were an absolute ball to watch and ALWAYS conducted themselves with class on the court.  Kudos to Manny on raising quality young men.

Buna being that low in the standings seems odd, im assuming they graduated a lot?

    Thought the same thing.

Buna will be young next season , graduated 5 Seniors  4 starters with 1 starter returning .

Makes sense then.  Still gotta think they will be in the mix.

Talking about actual basketball what can we expect from the Cats this season? Will they be able to challenge The Bucs & Lions for the top spot in 22 AAA?

I’d imagine the race for the district championship will be competitive once again. I can’t speak for other teams but Kountze should be better than last season as well as an incoming freshman that may start.

Not sure what EC has coming back.  Kountze will be better for sure.  OF will be tough to not drop at least a little with that Senior class. Not just Ragusa either, that was a special group.  My guess is it will be a fight between the Bucs and the Lions and then a dogfight for 3rd and 4th with the usual suspects.

There are always two sides to every story.  I know a lot of coaches read this site but I am not going to sit and be someone’s punching bag on a site where people hide their real name.  I am not hiding behind my screen name.  I have a great resume.  Yes, I have been at different places but some were my choice and some were the results of politics in this profession.  Some of you coaches who stir up the conversations and hide behind a screen name, well that is why I don’t come coach with you guys.  You should worry about your jobs since you are on short leashes.  You know who you are and coaches in the area know who you are too.  Heck, I have had 7 coaches contact me this morning about the jabs taken at me on this post and they all had only positive things to say.

    (Last 5 years)

OF Assistant – went 3 rounds deep, renewed for next school year.

Evadale Boys Head Coach – Won District Championship…tripled win total. Principal wanted her brother to be the coach.  (Turned out ok because I went to OF)

WOS Girls Head Coach – Renewed, accepted job at Evadale (basketball school)

Slocum Girls Head Coach – told girls program from Middle school to High School would not win a game.  Won 30 games overall…. AD wanted best friend as a retire/rehire to take over Girls.  Ask me to go to the boys’ side as assistant.  I ended up accepting job at WOS.  (Covid hit this year as well)

Deweyville Boys Coach – Wanted to coach my daughter.  Accepted job at Slocum.

111 wins as a Head Coach

3 District Championships as Head Coach, 3 District Championships as an Assistant

Graduate in December from Lamar as a Honor Student with Master of Education Administration Degree.

You don’t owe anyone any kind of explanation but good for you.  Personally, I wish you the best whether it is at OF or elsewhere.  I respect the sacrifices you guys make and all you do to help our kids.

How so? Orangefield is typically better than Lumberton (outside of Mcclure years). I guess I am a little bit biased, I would love to get to watch Mitchell coach 2x a year.

You may be right.  Higher classification. It’s his alma mater.  I’m assuming pay is better (I know, I know what they say about assuming).  Regardless, he apparently didn’t apply.
