  1. The SEC this year is the deepest hoops conference I can ever remember. They are way stronger in basketball than they’ve been in football, even in their own minds. In fact, of the big 3 sports, amazing to think football is easily the weakest right now.
  2. Good pull. I had forgotten about that one. What an athlete that guy was
  3. Couldn’t be more than 10 if it was probated, right?
  4. Eh, depends on your grasp of the word “most.” You don’t play with Jack Yates with 3 or 4 guys and not get your doors blown off. Fact is, he did a very, very good job in his first year as a head coach. Going to be a really good one for years to come and I couldn’t be less surprised.
  5. Lions had to throw it in reverse to “only” win by 44 😂
  6. Daspit has done a helluva job with this program. Not surprised Smalley found a really good, young coach to elevate that program. He’s done it his whole career.
  7. Same. I never count a Sutherland team out but Hitchcock’s Jimmy and Joes are just significantly better this year. Pulling for the Bucs but would set the line at Bulldogs -14.
  8. After SELA’s loss to McNeese, Lamar alone in 2nd. Speaking of SELA, former Card and Shelbyville Dragon Jay Buckley was just named conference player of the week for the second week in a row. And followed that up with 25 points and 7 assists against McNeese last night.
  9. There’s probably no bigger fan of your trolling on this site than me. But this is 2.7/10.
  10. That will almost assuredly be an open job at the end of the season. The name I’ve heard would definitely shock people. Not sure at all how accurate it is though.
  11. Back in the Stone Ages when I was in school, any technical foul (or unsportsmanlike in football for similar behavior) usually ended with some vomiting by the offending player after the next practice. You’re right - it was a strong deterrent.
  12. For sure. And I think he’s being paid enough he doesn’t have to take a bad job in a better conference. I basically meant he can’t afford to wait for a job where he thinks he can win immediately.
  13. D1, D2, D3, NAIA. Same principle. And there was definitely some Southland interest earlier in the season or maybe earlier in the school year (which happens to be D1). I know that for a fact. I’m not sure that’s still the case.
  14. He had some offers after last one. With what he’s being paid in Lake Charles, he’s being very selective with his next move. But I do agree with you and think after this season he will likely make the jump. If they are still willing to pay 3X Brooks salary (who is the second highest coach in the SLC last I checked), they can get another really good coach. And their AD is a hoops guy.
  15. Some of this stuff has implications way past what these kids probably realize. I know a 6’7” kid from the Houston area that at one time held an A&M offer. Big kid, wide shoulders, can hit the three and was one of the better back to the basket players I have seen at his age. Kind of an Adrian Dantley/Alex English type game for some of you old heads. Anyway, I’m not sure he has any committable offers at this point. Even lost some Southland offers for jawing at his coach, refs, etc. And this is a 6’7” kid who would be more talented than most of the rosters in the Southland. Point being, college coaches are very attune to red flags in this day and age. And when you can recruit kids out of the portal, you better be squeaky clean as a high school kid, on and off the court.
  16. Also keeps Lamar in a tie for second with SELA. I’ve seen a lot of criticism for Brooks and his staff any time they drop a game or two. But here is a cold, hard fact many, if not most of the Card faithful may not know or want to accept - in the current state of affairs in the Southland, 2nd is the ceiling for Lamar. That is to say, as long as Will Wade is at McNeese, and more accurately, as long as they are pumping the kind of money they are into their basketball program, Lamar isn’t going to compete with that. McNeese has a high mid-major NIL collective and honestly a roster to match. In fact, they have several players making more in NIL $ than the entire Lamar roster combined. Unless and until some of Lamar’s BMD decide they want to match their efforts (and Lamar’s biggest donors could buy and sell McNeese’s many times over), the Cards are not going to be able to compete with McNeese on a consistent basis. And honestly, I don’t think those guys care enough about Lamar basketball to make that a realistic probability. Love it or hate it, that’s the state of college sports and it has even hit the Southland.
  17. Funny story - back in the Silsbee runs when they were 10-15 players deep, I was sitting in a gym in Houston when Sigler was platooning 15 kids in that game. A buddy of mine who was from the Houston area and only familiar with Silsbee by reputation commented, “How do you keep those talented kids in line when you are having to divide the minutes up between that many kids?” Another friend, also from Houston and not super familiar with Silsbee commented “Look at their coach. He’s scaring me.”
  18. @AggiesAreWe I know there was a time when a Silsbee kid got a tech, he had to sit the next game (kind of like the targeting rule in CFB). Was that a Sigler thing or a district thing or what? I wasn’t crazy about that rule because especially down here, I have seen refs hand out technicals for ridiculous reasons. On the other hand, I would think that consequence would stop some of the nonsense going on as well. If a kid misses a layup and is mad at himself and takes a hard two hand dribble with the ball and gets a tech, that’s one thing (I’ve seen that exact scenario). If a kid curses at a ref, an opponent, etc and gets one, should be more than a foul imo.
  19. Exactly! I always thought that was kind of the point of this whole website to begin with?
  20. I’ve never been a huge Coach Cal fan but @Mr. Buddy Garrity, what did you think about him getting booed walking in the Rupp?
  21. Is one year not enough to qualify for a stretch? 😂 I was thinking it was 2-3 years but I’m old and relying on a subpar memory. Regardless, as I’ve said many times, SETX basketball is better when Kountze is in top form so I’m glad the Lions “are back.”
  22. Because this is the first season in over a decade they would be favored (imo anyway). More importantly, regardless of who would be a small favorite, it is also (other than arguably last year’s teams) where the game would be remotely competitive. Kountze was god awful for a stretch in there. Fortunately for the Lions, butt cheeks Kountze is gone and juggernaut Kountze is back. Ring huntin’ Lions even.
  23. No he hasn’t. And the freshman award was probably based on you could tell he was the most talented kid, even then. I was in the Perrault camp too because he was the best player on the best team and giving it to someone on a team that finishes in the bottom half of district seemed a little crazy. In hindsight, I’m kind of glad they did because Sells was definitely deserving to be in the conversation and 4 MVPs is just about unheard of. And from everything I hear, couldn’t happen to a better kid.
