In 2013-14 they weren’t in district together, 14-15 Buna was loaded with Richardson and Edwards leading the way and went 1-2 against Kountze. Not sure of head to head after that but Grayland was gone in 2016. Stanford didn’t have much help and Buna had both Connell boys at that time. Whitmire treated both my boys great. One was all-state and the other was a fouling machine.

I was starting with 2014-15, when they went 1-2.  Buna was very good but they were not as good as the three headed monster at Kountze who went to state.  The next year with Arnold still there, Buna won one or both (I think they split but can only find the Buna win). The next year Buna won 2 of 3.  I don’t know what you define as much help but Kountze had arguably the best player on the floor (I would take TJ but there is certainly an argument for Remi) and probably the third and fourth best players in those games with Cole and Edwards.

Well I had kids in his program for 8 years and wasn’t very impressed with him. You can message me or call and I’ll tell me my reasoning. Im not sure how much Buna basketball you have watched but I feel like we should have had more success then what we did.

I think everyone would agree Joubert is a good coach.  Yet from 2014 through 2017, Whitmire had a winning record against Kountze and that was during the Arnold, Harper, Stanford era when Kountze basketball was at a really good place (not the apex of Lion basketball but certainly toward the top).  So I would, in fact, argue Whitmire did more with less.  And that is no slight on Wilson.  He was also a really good hire. But to try and downplay what Whitmire did at Buna shows either sour grapes or an extreme lack of knowledge of the game of basketball (or both).

For those who won't hit the link, Anadarko, Ok held the ball the entire game and lost 4-2, after being down 2-0 at the half.  Down 4-2, they held the ball until the final buzzer, missing what would've been a game-winning three against Weatherford, Ok, who moves to 19-1 with the win.

Clowns like that are going ensure we end up with a shot clock in HS basketball.

By 1 point.  These two are about as close as you can get.

Barring upset it looks like the Tigers will face 4 of 6 good teams depending on which ends up winning their districts.

    Round 2 Jacksonville or Bullard

Round 3 HJ or HF or Bullard or Jacksonville

    Region Semi  Furr or Washington

    Region Final Furr or Washington.

Jacksonville is not ranked but they just beat 12th ranked Bullard on Tuesday by 17 points so I call them a good team.

Jacksonville and Bullard are tied at 6-1 in District 18.  Washington and Furr are tied at 12-1 in District 21.  HJ is in the drivers seat in 20 with a one game lead over HF and the rematch at home.

Man I am way out of touch with East Texas.  When did Jacksonville drop to 4A?  (Please don’t tell me 10 years ago.)

It’s hard to question the lcm coach for not pressuring the ball up by 8 and other team is standing at half court

My thoughts too.  Why would I pressure the ball when I have a 2-3 possession lead and I’m essentially being given an opportunity to rest my players and shorten the game?  I might have questioned Jeffcoat if he HAD pressured the ball in that instant.

Good win for the Bears though.  Seems like they are getting stuff figured out and may be separating themselves from the rest of the field.

I have seen cases where the verdict doesn’t seem to match the under oath answers in voir dire. An example is a person not believing in the death penalty but doing voir dire it is typically asked if a person can “consider” the full range of punishment.

I didn’t know that the state could appeal a punishment.

Very true on voir dire.  But that should have eliminated the shock of the punishment range.

I have the same understanding on the state’s ability to appeal.  But I have also never seen a verdict outside of punishment range other than one case where the fine exceeded the punishment range (read the case once) and the CoA remanded for the fine portion only (and that was obviously the Defendant appealing).  No idea if the state has same restriction for an illegal verdict.  My guess is they are going to go with it or the state would have asked for a new trial.  Again, probably the right result all the way around (in my largely uninformed opinion anyway).

UT lost to #4 Tennessee last weekend, but this week beat #10 baylor and #7 KSU.  Their next game is at #8 Kansas. They then get three unranked teams before finishing up their regular season with four straight matchups against top-15 teams.  The big 12 is insane this year.

Has arguably been the best hoops conference for a while now.  Don’t think it’s even going to be an argument adding U of H and BYU (and sounds like Gonzaga sooner rather than later). Those three will more than make up for loss of UT and OU.

And Lunadi has 8 of the 10 teams in right now.

To me it's about match ups. Kountze just can't match up with Anahuac. Too big.

I borrowed this from Mike but it hits the nail on the head. Basketball has always been and always will be about the matchups. Shooting nights will come and go but bad matchups are hard to overcome!!

I think you are both correct about matchups, but shooting has also certainly played a large factor.  Certainly seems to be some matchup issues with the different teams.  We might see it play out some this week OF has Anahuac and Kountze on the road.  I think the Bobcats guards gave Anahuac issues in the first half and OF does have some size.  I do think the Kountze game could play out much differently if they can hit the proverbial broad side of the barn this time around.  On paper that one should be much closer than it was at least.

  9. Funny to chirp about stats and then get offended about the worst kept secret in SETX.  Tigee ruffled a lot of feathers because some of the Jefferson County boys stopped and went to school at HF before they got deeper into Chambers County.

But 900 is a heckuva accomplishment for sure and Sutherland is a hall of fame coach with or without the Beaumont kids.  And speaking of stats, looked like most of Winnie had that one on t shirts after game.  And don’t mistake that as begrudgingly.  Aren’t many guys in the country who have hit that number.  And I’m not sure how old Todd is exactly but he looks great.  I would think that speedometer could flip a few more times before it’s all said and done.

Good luck to the Bucs in the playoffs. Barring a really deep run for BOTH teams, should be pulling for the guys in green every round too.

The only thing that I can figure is that someone in the jury room pitched a fit at the 25 your minimum as a habitual violator and others went along with it.

I am sure that the district attorney presented evidence that he was in fact a habitual violator. As you said, the penalty range for a habitual violator is 25-99 years. So at a minimum they had to assess at least 25 years.

It seems like they went with only Manslaughter and its  2-20 option and ignored his prior felonies.

Of course a jury does not know that but after finding him guilty, they could’ve hung the jury in the penalty phase. There should then be a new trial on the penalty phase only.

I would have thought they would have been voir dired on the range of punishment though.  As you know, you can do that without discussing the priors. But maybe they decided not to for that reason.  In any event, seems like an automatic remand on punishment.  But maybe the DA’s office lets it go and they go with the 10 years.  Honestly from what I’ve read re: the facts of the case (I know that’s a dangerous way to base opinions), 10 years might be a just sentence in this case.  25 to life seems a bit harsh for recklessness but I also realize the point of having the habitual statute and sounds like the guy was well past felony number 3.

    This district is weird!!!!

    Anahuac beat Ktz

    Ktz beat EC

    EC beat oF twice

    OF smoked AP & Ktz

Are the top 4 nearly interchangeable ?

On any given night.  Throw Buna in there too.  Basketball on all levels often boils down to whether you make shots or not.  Obviously defense has something to do with it too but with some of these teams, that’s the big variable.  At this point, it certainly appears EC is the most consistent team.  Fortunately for them, that’s been a trademark of theirs for many years.  I wonder what the constant is there?

This is the quoted definition of reckless.

    (c) A person acts recklessly, or is reckless, with respect to circumstances surrounding his conduct or the result of his conduct when he is aware of but consciously disregards a substantial and unjustifiable risk that the circumstances exist or the result will occur.

You can see that is says “he is aware of but consciously disregards” the substantial risk.

    Criminal negligence quoted is:

     (d) A person acts with criminal negligence, or is criminally negligent, with respect to circumstances surrounding his conduct or the result of his conduct when he ought to be aware of a substantial and unjustifiable risk that the circumstances exist or the result will occur.

You can see the difference is “ought to be aware of” the substantial risk.

So reckless is aware of the risk and says to heck with it. Criminal negligence is you should have been paying attention.

What was up with that verdict?  Any idea on how it will be handled?

For those unaware, the Defendant was facing a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of life in prison due to 2 or more prior felony convictions (aka habitual offender).  Jury sentenced him to 10 years (well below the minimum of the range they were given).
