2024-25 NCAA Basketball Season thread
TxHoops replied to Mr. Buddy Garrity's topic in College Sports Forum
Got to watch him for three summers playing for Will Barton’s team, coached by Muggsy Bogue’s son. Even as a chubby 15 year old playing against kids going into their senior year of high school, you could tell he was going to be special. Kind of a throwback game. -

So you’re saying the Southland Conference is one of only nine conferences with a team in the second round of the NCAA tournament? Cool! -

He’s probably pissed he didn’t get the Texas job. So was another coach was eliminated in the second round who was lobbying hard for that position apparently, even going so far as saying it was his “dream job.” Not sure if that fan base would have lost their minds as much as when they lost their last coach to UT though. -

I am afraid you will see more and more of that. Tough to compete in the major leagues with a minor league payroll. Combine that with kids staying in school longer (all but sure fire first round picks can make more now staying in school) and I think we will see fewer and fewer Cinderella stories. Hope I’m wrong. -

ACC is way down though and apparently they have put a big NIL collective together in Raleigh. Will knows how to go out and get dudes and should be able to be top half of conference immediately. I think he figured he wasn’t going to jump from Lake Charles to blue blood so this would be a good immediate fit. Also guessing he probably wasn’t on the Nova short list. NC St probably an easier place to win right now that WVU. -

Been some heavy lobbying for the Texas job going on for weeks, including by one that would make for some hilarious fodder. I think if WW was in the mix, he wouldn’t have taken the NC St job and I am guessing he wasn’t. Of the viable ones, Quinn Snyder apparently let them know months ago he was ready to make the jump back to college ball. But the main target seems to be Scott Drew. Hard to believe he would take that job after telling Kentucky to pound sand last year but who knows these days. -

Give Brooks a half a mil per year to “recruit” like Will has and I bet his recruiting improves tremendously. I would say he’s recruited pretty damn well finding guys who can compete with little to no funds. -

They have guys on their bench Lamar would have no chance of getting due to the NIL they command. Their top 3 guys, coming off the bench, were Saint Louis’s leading scorer last year (top tier mid major program) and two guys who started games for Arizona State and Ole Miss. Their bench players. They have more than one guy making 6 figures. In short, every player that plays for them could arguably be Lamar’s best player. They have a high mid major roster if you ask anyone who knows their butt from their elbow about college basketball. So yes, Alvin has improved Lamar’s record every season he’s been there. He played a team with a roster WAYYYY better than his very competitively twice in the past couple of weeks. You guys expecting them to win the conference need to start raising money. Because you give Will his roster and give him Will’s roster, those games have the same winner. It’s about the dudes and McNeese has bought a bunch of them. -

I’m still trying to figure out where the haters went? Win or lose tonight, I think we can stop with the Alvin Brooks slander at this point. -

Yeah they might have last year but probably not. Don’t see any scenario the Southland will be anything but a one bid conference. Can’t remember who but they had a marquee win or two last year that they don’t have on their resume this year. -

Great job West Brook! Very happy for them and Coach T. I would say Southeast Texas showed pretty well this year in SA. -

Hurley won’t likely survive this season. But even if he did, I’d be surprised if he ever logs a minute for the Sun Devils hoops team. -
Congrats Lions and Coach Joubert on a remarkable season. I think Mr Sells will be one we talk about for years to come. On a side note, @AggiesAreWe, @BBfan061 wanted me to ask you if you were rooting on Kountze or Paradise today?
-
You saw that too?! My wife found the episode much more interesting than my history lesson of the Four Horsemen of HD…
-
Congrats to Orangefield’s own, Jay Bruce, on back to back championships with Martin’s Mill!

To be fair, after watching a true crime show with the wife last week, things have actually improved at Hull Daisetta. At least they don’t still have principals murdering coaches for stealing their secretary girlfriends. So kudos may actually be in order as opposed to suspensions…

Cardinal Basketball 2024 - 2025 Predictions & Updates
TxHoops replied to Bobcat1's topic in Lamar Sports Forum
Absolutely. Not many coaches would see Lamar as a “destination job.” He is one of the few. He told many people when he got the job that, one way or another, this would be his last stop. And if you know him, he means what he says. Personally, I hope he’s got several years left in him. -

We love to bitch and moan about coaches/coaching but aren’t so quick to give credit where it’s due. Lamar has improved every single year under Brooks’ tenure. I don’t know how much more you can ask for, especially when the one team finishing ahead of you is paying to get players who have played, could play for some lower power 4/5 schools. Marco Born was pretty much a train wreck as AD at Lamar but I think we can safely say he got this one right. Not only has Alvin Brooks done a good job building this program, he’s a fine man who is 100% loyal to the University. Let’s give credit where it’s due. -
Signs of the apocalypse… Just actually looked at the honorees though. Silsbee had 9 kids honored. Used to be if you lettered, you got a jacket or a patch if you already had a jacket. Now you get “All District” 😂
-
Because of its consistency, Silsbee has been the standard in 4A. The names and faces have changed out of DFW and hasn’t been one particular school like Silsbee.
-
Was telling someone the other day that you know a program is in rarified air when you spend a season ranked in the top 10, go undefeated in district, win a playoff game, and then lose in the second round to one of the most storied programs in the history of the state from a city 350 times bigger than yours and the season feels like a huge disappointment. A bad year for Silsbee is a dream season for most schools. And this season will be the exception to the rule I’m sure for awhile.

If they had 17 fouls at half, doesn’t sound like they were “giving up” anything… -
When you charge $500k to $1M for a retainer and charge $750 to $1000 per hour (very educated guesses), the money won’t last a decade. It’s also harder to withdraw from a case when you have to respond to Johnny Stevens, “your honor, I was only paid X to represent Mr Walker and I’ve already billed him in excess of that.” And I’ve not nothing against DeGuerin, he’s a helluva lawyer and that’s his value in the market. But you’re also never getting released from representing him through trial. His continued representation is something else and I’m sure it’s him choosing to see this through.
