  1. Butkus, Ray Nitschke, Lee Roy Jordan, Sam Huff. Jack Lambert came a little later but was cut from the same cloth. Those guys were all a different breed. Tough as nails. Butkus was the cream of that crop though.
  2. Welp, we can no longer be friends...
  3. My dad had a picture when I was growing up of an offensive lineman who had his hand in Butkus' facemask, and Butkus was biting his fingers. Classic Butkus. They just don't make em like those guys anymore.
  4. Rarefied air. When Houston schools in this classification are anxious to prove their mettle against the Tigers, that says something about the state of your program. And I know that is absolutely the case for one team that appears to be on a collision course with Silsbee. Hopefully they will be looking past the Bears tomorrow night and get tripped up. Not likely, but one can hope.
  5. Funny you mentioned this. I was unaware of the series totals, but was just thinking yesterday that in basketball (especially the last several years), Yates has probably been Silsbee’s biggest rival. Those two have had some unbelievable games against each other as well.
  6. I must have missed that gem. I do remember one basketball aficionado posting that Whitmire was one of the most underrated coaches in our area. That guy is almost always right by the way.
  7. Go Tigers! Hope it is a clean, injury free game. Glad you have joined the site, by the way. We have been missing a Yates presence on this board this season. And you guys are always passionate and a welcome addition.
  8. Bama will be trying to find home plate for the first time in game 3 tomorrow.
  9. I don’t get all the hate on Abbott but maybe that’s me. Overall, I think he’s done an admirable job and truly believe he’s a good man. In politics, that’s about the best we can hope for it seems. Sad but true.
  10. No they weren’t. MaxPreps isn’t your friend. But they were good, didn’t mean to imply they weren’t. They just lost that triumvirate of guards (two of which are playing at a high level in D1 basketball) and weren’t as good as those previous teams that battled with Silsbee. But they were MUCH better than this year’s team obviously.
  11. I was. I originally thought he was and then read something to thinking he had another year. Man I hate that for him. Can’t imagine what he must be going through. I don’t know him but based on what I’ve heard from multiple people who I respect, he’s a really good kid. Unfortunately, even good kids do stupid stuff sometimes.
  12. The Huffman run last year was anomaly. Region wasn’t the usual juggernaut, hell a team that was freshman/JV aged from Silsbee could have won it. Not that they weren’t good but still. Yates was and is on the decline. HH also had a really good 4A player that was a coach on the floor. Point being, Silsbee is really still the only southeast Texas team that has the goods to run with the big boys on a consistent basis. Arguing who is the best in 21-4A is ultimately arguing who is perhaps going to get a win or two in the playoffs.
  13. Nimitz has won 21 games this year. They won 16 in the last 2 years combined. First playoff win in over a decade. Same team came back. Thanks for making my point for me 😂🤣
  14. Great finish to season Mustangs. Hopefully gives them something to build on next year.
  15. Meanwhile, Tigee turns around Nimitz in year one. If he had stuck around, HF either wins that district or shares the title imo. He’s that good. And no one bring up last year unless you’ve been asleep since for the last 2 years.
