  1. Athletics isn't for everyone. Perhaps these kids weren't in good enough condition to endure the physical requirements of being an athlete. Looks to me as a sign for a schedule change. Like my dad used to say "if it's too hot in the kitchen...". I'm sure you know the rest. And yes...pansies are multiplying at an uncontrollable rate. Let's just beat society to the punch and drop athletics class altogether, sell football equipment, sell scoreboards, and go to flag football, offensive only basketball, and pitching machine baseball...wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. After the game, the kids could celebrate the fact that everyone won and hold hands while singing campfire songs.
  2. Who was HF's coach during all this? Sounds like they would've definitely had the talent to make a run at it.
  3. AAU is a necessary evil. The benefit they get from it is that they will be on the floor with other good players. But as far as learning anything concerning basketball foundation skills..nah..I don't think so. Learn how to hone their ability to score or handle the ball one on one for sure. But there isn't any TEAM defense being played in most AAU circuits.
  4. Teachings? Surely you jest. The little AAU I've seen is as follows: Can't play defense...otherwise wouldn't be able to snowbird (and get a dunk). And when the 5 defenders beat the ball down the floor, normally the person that crosses half court with the ball is using some 1 on 1 moves to try to score. Normally everyone else stands out of the way.. That was my take on it anyway. I probably won't be watching any "AAU" ball anytime soon. I catch a fair amount of college games though. Both TV (of course) and in person. For a while, skill was on the down slide and athleticism was on the rise. However...I think skill is catching up to athleticism. I think the reason is the shot clock. It forces kids to become scorers because when you only have a set amount of time each possession you have to have players than can score. College coaches are recruiting more and more really athletic kids that have the ability to score. The more I think about it, the more I really wish they would put in the shot clock in high school. Who want's to see a team full of defensive specialists that stall because they can't score. I love when people tell me "my kid/grandkid is a really good defensive player". Oh you mean they suck on offense? Can't shoot or dribble?.. haha
  5. Well I've been trying to explain since the time my account was created the reasons the rest of the state is leaving setx behind. Especially in football and education. Especially since my previous post was to a WOS fan. It's simple. Money = high quality coaches, high quality teachers, more coaches, more coaches that have fewer or no classroom assignments, nicer facilities (venue/weight room/locker rooms/ library/etc..) which attract families/players, players in summer speed/strength camps, 7 on 7 summer tournaments (sponsored), personal training. It's a slow process but money can and does buy wins. Typical setx attitude is "well this is how we did it in 1980 and it's good enough". There are always exceptions...but for the most part look at ALL football state champions over the last decade, and look at their facilities, coach's salary, average household income in school district... Like I said, there are some that don't necessarily apply. But it is no coincidence that the same schools/areas are making deep runs every year in football.
  6. Well..actually money does have quite a bit to do with it. More than you think. I know it's hard for setx fans to understand.. But anyway.. on top of that you also need good players. Because all the heart and pride in the world won't win without talented players. Sorry.
  7. It doesn't matter how much money you pay or who you bring in.. Barbers Hill isn't winning a state championship in this classification unless the coach is bringing a bunch of players.
  8. Not sure if you're joking or not..but I sure got a good laugh out of this.
  9. Unfortunately it doesn't really matter how you may feel about it...or that they've been top 25 every year for the past 10-12 years. TABC most of the time bases it's ranking on records. And they get their records from maxpreps.com. So if a coach doesn't enter all of the team info (win/loss) into maxpreps then that team will most likely not be in the rankings. And if a school does have info in maxpreps but that team has several losses...they may or may not be in the rankings. I'm pretty sure it would have to be losses to other ranked teams. That's like UH being ranked so well in college football for a while...even tho they probably couldn't beat half (or more) of the teams in the SEC that weren't ranked at all. Rankings don't matter. Who cares if they're ranked or not...
  10. I guess Goodrich is gone huh?.. They just keep having "down" years.
  11. They need to cut him loose. No way this is good for the team, especially knowing he may decide AGAIN that he wants to "focus on football". I say get rid of him.
  12. I 100% respect the kid's wishes. He wants to drop basketball and get ready for his career in college football...go for it. I was just speaking in regard to an earlier post that said he's changed his mind once before. Giving me the implication it may happen again. I'm just saying Kountze basketball doesn't need that. Play...or don't play. But don't go back and forth. Those Kountze kids need to know they DONT NEED any one player to have a good year. Would it help? Sure. But just move on and make up for the absence somewhere else. I will add that personally I don't believe that playing would've hurt anything. I doubt he would miss any "prep time" by playing basketball instead of focusing on football. Maybe get a little more time in the weight room...but going to miss a lot of running. Whether court or grass...sprints are sprints. No way he runs as much on his own that he would playing basketball especially in Kountze. But hey...to each their own.
  13. Well if he's going to be wishy washy about it then they're probably better off without him. I don't care how talented a player may be. Might be better off without him anyway. It's obvious he isn't going into it dedicated to begin with. Let someone else have a chance to get better. Maybe a kid they'll depend on in the future will get some much needed game experience .
  14. When a 3A team loses their All State Sr Point Guard...there will be an impact. They'll still be fine in that district...may struggle a little bit more than usual. But probably still fine. May have an impact in playoffs though. Most likely.
  15. Well, most of the schools in the district are sending kids to D1 schools for athletic purposes (play football). Barbers Hill is not. But, Barbers Hill is probably sending a lot of kids to college for academic reasons. Maybe even some Ivy League schools. Not saying Barbers Hill doesn't have talented kids..and not saying those other schools don't have smart kids. But I don't think BH sways as much toward having a bunch of athletic talent like their district opponents. Kind of like: Stanford has very talented players..and every once in a while they have a good enough team to beat some upper echelon schools. But...year in and year out, they wouldn't do very well in the SEC. Alabama, LSU, and company just get better players. Take that how you want.
  16. I think that BH is going to go out and get a guy that is a proven winner. Probably someone with a big school state championship..or more. But he'll get there and have the same success that all of these past BH coaches will have. Not much. It's unfortunate but they don't have the right type of student athlete to compete with the Dayton, Crosby, Humble, C.E. King, etc...'s of the world year after year. That school strikes me as a place that is dominant in all activities that require superior intelligence and/or unique skill set. Example: academics, band, girl's basketball, baseball, softball, distance running,.. And activities that require just raw athleticism are probably a struggle. Football, track, boys basketball. I'm no follower of Barbers Hill or anything...but I'd be willing to bet no school in the district wants to have a Test Score contest. But none would have a problem with a footrace.
  17. Couple things: East Chambers has done as much or more since Evans left as they did when he was there. So..yeah. And Tatum...it's an awful funny coincidence that Evans won 2 state titles when he had superior athletes...yet has had mediocre at best years without them. Case in point...0-10 this season. Did he all the sudden forget how to develop athletes?.. or try a couple years under a new game plan?.. It's ok. You don't have to answer. And...Barbers Hill was successful before: 1) In a lower classification. 2) When they did jump classifications the district was different. This district did not look the same when Don Price was there as it does now. I'm just saying. Athletes make THE difference. You can think what you want...but you can't win a horse race with a donkey. I don't care how good of a trainer you are.
  18. He is a football guy..in terms of I believe he was an amazing high school and collegiate football player. But..how many years at Kountze did he coach and NOT help out with football. I'm sure if he wanted to he would've been allowed to at least assist. And..this is Kountze. They do not necessarily need the AD to be tied to football. History tells us that. I would bet, if he chose, he could probably keep the AD title and hire someone to be Head Football. You may not think they would get a good coach without being AD...but there would still be plenty of applicants. Lots of big school assistants want that Head FB on their resume.
  19. Anyone that thinks Coach Joubert would give up basketball and keep football is crazy. I would think he is an individual that likes winning too much. I would bet he keeps AD title and Head Basketball along with it...and gives up football. I'm sure either that...or leave. No way he keeps football instead of basketball...at Kountze...even without the Arnold kid I'm sure the basketball team will still be just fine.
  20. I'm not saying he isn't good at what he does. And he undoubtedly has forgotten more basketball than I'll ever know...but you can't tell me you don't see the significance. All 11 championships he won he had 1 of the 2 arguably greatest scorers in the history of the game. No Kobe...No MJ...no ring. I find that to be a fact that can't be argued. And yet he is said to be one of the greatest NBA coaches ever. How can you justify the Miami Heat making multiple Finals appearances and championships to all of the sudden not even making the playoffs? Well...I think you know the answer to that question. And it has zero to do with coaching. Again.. Congrats Coach Boutte
  21. This is where my opinion takes criticism. Don't get me wrong...great honor. And he definitely worked his way into a position to be a very successful coach. With a resume that no doubt deserves a Hall of Fame induction. And wins is what gets you there. But keep this in mind.. Phil Jackson didn't win any championships without MJ or Kobe. None. So you guys saying that he is the greatest Texas high school coach that's ever lived...I think that the greatest coaches alive today are probably people you've never heard of. A good coach in my opinion is someone who has his/her team competing every single game especially with lesser talent. Because the only thing that changes from year to year is the talent you have. Coaches become better coaches with more exposure to experience. So if a coach wins a championship one year because he is a "better coach" then why doesn't that coach continue to win championships every year? Because they have different players. Anyways.. Congrats. Truly a great honor.
  22. I have no doubt. It should just be cleared up to what some people think. Joubert giving somebody Kountze basketball to coach Kountze football would be the same as giving someone Newton football to coach Newton basketball. Stick with the proven winner.
  23. Here's the dillusional thought of the day. Coach Joubert handing Kountze basketball over to Travis Williams...or anyone else for that matter. No way he gives up 30 wins a year and state contender for a 6 wins a year and hopefully 1 playoff game.
  24. Good read. I know that one of the most obvious differences is post play. I think that once an American kid gets labeled as a post player, their youth coach puts their back to the basket. That's good and all...but it's no coincidence that European post players can actually shoot free throws and American post players suck. It's because overseas EVERY player is taught how to shoot..handle the ball..make finess passes. Too much about athleticism, dunking, snowbirding...etc. going downhill fast. dont get me wrong...I love watching freak athletes play the game well. But..something will never change. Shoot, handle the ball, pass, defend. Like LJ said...something is being left out somewhere.
  25. Can you give me an example of an "AAU system". I'm curious. It's been a couple of summers...but the last time I saw any AAU ball it looked an awful lot like what I consider street ball. They went 5 wide on offense or 4 low and took turns trying to score on their defender using a 1 on 1 move. Most of the time it was whoever had the ball when it came across half court. Unless someone could get a fast break dunk in transition. Zero defense from any person other than whoever was guarding the ball. Don't get me wrong...I know the game has changed tremendously and I have no problem with it. But it if that's what "can't be done" in high school, then I disagree. Unless you're speaking of a different "system". So..enlighten me. Please.
