Instead of posting past records and making statements like “did the talent show up that year?” you should take a few other things into account. What did the districts look like before and after, classification changes, economic/population shifts, natural resource discoveries, school openings, the building of new facilities ...there are so many things that happen and change that affects school sports success. Plus...how about the fact that Allen could split into 3 6A schools if they wanted to. You think that hasn’t had an impact on Beaumont?
-
Could Scott Surratt, Art Briles, or Tom Westerberg take any staff to ANY school in the state and win a state championship in 6 years? That’s enough time to see the 1st 7th graders graduate. Houston Scarborough, ANY El Paso school, ANY South Texas school, Warren, Hardin, Tarkington...want me to continue?
-
I think he went because of money, facilities, and the fact that he’s AD and not just Head football coach. Eventually there comes a point when a coach has to think about the 30 years after coaching...and not just the 30 years spent coaching. Same reason Tod Dodge went to UNT and got embarrassed for 3 seasons...because public universities pay into TRS as well.
-
True. But these proven coaches also never go to schools that don’t have a history of success...or great facilities. Because if these coaches really thought they could win anywhere then they would go to any school that’s willing to pay. But that doesn’t happen.
-
Yeah that’s kinda helping my point. When a staff gets replaced but the school keeps winning...
-
You’re right. I meant he hadn’t won one. And after winning 4 in a row not very long ago...you’d think he’d just keep getting rings. Since it’s all about coaching like some think.
-
How do you explain Lake Travis winning 5 in a row under 3 different head coaches? By the way...a MAJORITY of the time the new AD brings their own people. Especially at a school that size.
-
Did I say he isn’t doing a good job?
-
And Austin Westlake is precisely the type of affluent area that’s going to have some relative success all the time. But since you brought it up...why didn’t he win it? Matter of fact, why weren’t they in the title game this year?
-
It has nothing to do with Cornell’s past. And everything to do with the fact that WOS has kids that play FBS football every year. Has Tarkington ever had a kid play at ... a school like Alabama? If you think Cornell Thompson could go to Tarkington and they start having kids play big time D1 and start winning state titles then you’re wrong. There’s a reason he doesn’t leave WOS for more money. That’s probably because he’d rather keep winning than make more money and lose.
-
Had Allen won many before Westerberg? But I guess that didn’t have anything to do with having the most prolific high school qb that’s ever taken a snap. By the way Allen is still winning them without Westerberg. But...will he win another title? I certainly don’t think so at BH. And Tod Dodge won 4 in a row a while back at Southlake Carroll. Hasn’t even coached in a title game since...is he a worse coach now? If it was ALL ABOUT the coach then the same coach would win the championship every year.
-
It has been argued by me that players have more to do with winning/losing than coaching. I could give countless examples that prove this but I’ll just stick to very recent. Mart won a state title this year. Again...but with a different head coach. Same exact thing with Newton. And Allen... Very recently Lake Travis won 5 consecutive titles. With...3 different head coaches...umm?? Andy Evans was at EC for over a decade and never got past round 3...then goes to Tatum and wins 2 state championships. Nobody finds that odd? Now I’m not saying a good coach won’t make a difference. But if it was all about coaching then why are the same schools successful regardless of who coaches them? And on that same note why have previously successful coaches not successful every year? Well..I hate to break it to you but it’s because the rosters change every year. Some years you have good players. Some years you don’t. And sometimes you don’t have good players but everyone else sucks just a little bit more. If you don’t believe that then you probably think Cornell Thompson could win a title at Tarkington (1 of several examples). Which is a joke. You probably also think Westerberg will win a title at BH. No offense...but that’s not happening either.

Region might be a little tougher (finally) with the addition of Silsbee and possibly Jasper. I wouldn’t say given. -
Who has the best 8th grade middle school basketball team?

More importantly... Who....cares? Sorry but subvarsity sports don’t mean anything. Especially junior high. So much changes by the time they’re in high school. Kids move, fail, quit, peak... -

A vast majority of high school kids never experience a state title game. The WOS seniors did it 4 times. Awesome. -
They need to just let every starter be 1st Team All District. And any kid that ever gets in the game be 2nd Team. Do away with honorable mention. Then the wussification can be complicated.
-
HP has very athletic kids too. And size, and strength, and depth...and HP kids are probably very smart. Teachers are required to have a masters degree. If you think that doesn’t make a difference then you’re wrong. All irrelevant at this point. Congrats on winning maybe the best title game I’ve ever seen. I was very entertained.
-
If it’s not about players then the same coach should win the state championship every year. Only one thing changes from year to year...and that’s the roster.
-
So he could replicate athletes exactly like the ones he has?...at any other school? Meaning FBS caliber players...
-
It would appear so. Newton was on another level.
-
All 13 players scored against who? Because that doesn't mean they're deep...maybe they played a garbage team. Which happens all the time. How many kids score..or even play when they're in a close game..? The number of players that contribute in a close game determines how deep a team is. Not how many players score against a bad team.

Texas 10 Highest Paid HS Football Coaches
oldschool2 replied to Raider24's topic in High School Football
Are you serious? Yes...employees at some schools deserve more $ than employees at other schools. It is not only a lot more pressure and stress...but a lot heavier workload. If all teachers at all schools were paid exactly the same then there would be no teachers at huge schools or inner city schools. Those schools have to incentivize the job or else every teacher in the state would work at a tiny school and have class sizes of 10 rather than 30. -

So the Head football coach/AD at Katy should top out at 80,000?... And the Head football coach/AD at High Island should also top out at 80,000?...And a teacher at Allen High School should make the same as a teacher at Burkeville...And a principal..I think you get the point. You need to realize that some schools in this state have a student enrollment in the thousands and other schools have an enrollment of less than 100. Think about that for a second and please rethink what you said. -

This is not actually a real option. Assuming that that entire 155K would be used to hire teachers is assuming that there will be no AD/HFC. Because either way the school has budgeted for a head football coach. But that's an administrative position that a school (with athletics) cannot be without. So let's assume he should get paid what SeTx AD/HFCs get paid. I think most around here are in the 70-90 range...But higher end (success/experience) ADs even in this area are in the 90ish range. I think Scott Surratt has earned the right to be considered a high end football coach. So pay him what high-end coaches make...90K. That leaves 65K of what you're implying should be taken away to replace with teachers. Hate to tell you 65K will get you 1 and 1/2 experienced teachers or 2 teachers with zero experience. At a district the size of Carthage k-12...2 teachers isn't really going to make a difference. Probably not even 2 teachers.
