  1. Maybe Center should be ranked #1
  2. Hate to break it to you...but I could list dozens of schools in this area alone that he could NOT win a title at. Ever. No matter how long he was there. And I know that winning titles is not about how many one sends to college...but the fact that he has kids get sent to big time football programs has more to do with their success than just good coaching. A coach CAN NOT turn a small, slow, and weak kid into a D1 player. Sometimes it's not physically possible. But on the contrary...a potential D1 athlete will turn an average coach into a great coach. I'm not by any means saying that this is what happened...but that's the way it happens more often than not.
  3. There is no denying. My point is simply this...he might go to High Island and turn a 5.5 second 40 into a 5.0 second 40... but a 5.0 second 40 is still not fast enough. And he may turn a 140lb bench press into a 180lb bench press...but that's still weak. So yeah he might make them better given enough time and community support, but there will be no state championships.
  4. I agree with this and believe that it's exactly the same as it is with Saban. Maybe no as far as salary compared to the money generated...but that's irrelevant. Carthage is paying Surratt not only what they think he's worth but also paying him what it will take to keep him employed at Carthage ISD. Maybe he is overpaid according to some but Carthage knows he's worth it. State Championships cost money... if Carthage thinks they need to pay that in order to keep in as HFC then they have every right to. It was the Sup's decision, approved by the board, that was elected by the people of Carthage. If they want different they can change it.
  5. No...similar statements were made regarding Carthage having never seen speed like what Silsbee had. While that may be true...it didn’t matter. And it won’t matter this time either. Newton’s only shot will be playing mistake free. Speed alone will not win it this time.
  6. Similar statements were made prior to the Carthage/Silsbee game. Just sayin..
  7. I just saw the craziest thing on TV. On Fox Sports Southwest they showed the 2008 5Ad1 state title game. Allen vs Fort Bend Hightower. The game was in Houston...and Allen won. Personally I’m still trying to figure out how it happened. There was obviously “Home field advantage” all over the game. I know...it’s crazy.
  8. Is that what’s happening out in BC? And just to be fair...you’re implying that the previous coaching staff didn’t lift weights or have an offseason program. I’m willing to bet that’s not true. Their new coach may have a DIFFERENT program but that doesn’t mean it’s better or worse. Time will tell.
  9. A poor-decent coach can win with superior talent. A great coach can NOT win with zero talent. I don't care what anyone says. The reason that the same coaches don't have the same results on a yearly basis is that the players change. On their team and the teams they play. I've always said that some coaches are better than others..and some coaches can do more with players than other coaches can. But EVERY single coach will only be as good as his/her team allows them to be. Back to an earlier point.. Coach T would not have any state championship rings if he were at another school other than WOS. Ask Barbers Hill if it's strictly coaching that wins games.
  10. Do you think that Nick Saban should make the same salary as the Dean at the University of Alabama?
  11. Gotcha. And yeah I was talking about all of SeTx when I said "this area". Which includes the Greater Houston schools...which (now that I look into it) pay quite a bit more than the Beaumont area... My biggest problem is that school districts cap a teacher's salary after a certain number of years. I think if a teacher is still a good enough teacher to teach that long then their salary should increase even after a certain number of years. Maybe have contracts reviewed each year at a certain point...but don't stop the pay increase. That's my opinion on that.
  12. Umm... I listed several bigger schools that start out over 50K. Do you know how many individual schools fall under Houston, Goose Creek, Barbers Hill, Humble, Katy, Dayton...ISDs? And I just stopped after those. ..yeah I think Dayton is considered this area. Houston and surrounding areas qualify as Southeast Texas more than San Augustine, Jasper, and Newton...
  13. Maybe those teachers need to get out of the Beaumont area.
  14. Beaumont ISD starts at 45K [Hidden Content] Houston ISD starts at 52.5K [Hidden Content] Goose Creek ISD starts at 54K [Hidden Content] BH ISD starts at 52K (as told by a friend) Humble ISD starts at 53K [Hidden Content] Katy ISD starts at 52K [Hidden Content] Dayton ISD starts at 49K [Hidden Content]
  15. There are a lot of school districts in the area that pay quite a bit more than that. And I'm not talking about huge schools. Even though the bigger schools start teachers at over 50K for no experience...increasing annually. Tough as a single home income but if in a working married couple that isn't bad at all.
  16. Could Coach Thompson go to High Island with his entire staff for 5 years and turn one of their 7th graders into an Alabama signee?
  17. Pretty good analogy.
  18. Most Texas HFCs are also ADs...which is a school administrator. Those guys are earning that salary so I have no problem with it. And I think that teacher salaries are probably about where they should be as well. Of course, they're all different dependant on the school district. But teachers are probably pretty close to about what they should make..in my opinion. Before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I'm not saying that they don't deserve more $. But a school district is treated like a business and probably should be. Schools get funding based on property taxes and school enrollment/attendance. Why should a teacher at a school that has a tiny enrollment, a low tax base, and poor attendance pay the same as a school with a huge amount of $? That doesn't make sense. If a teacher doesn't like what they currently earn they could always apply for a teaching job in a district that pays more. I think most would tell you that schools that pay well entail a lot more responsibility and stress. Or they might do something else to supplement their income. Someone mentioned coaching, driving a bus, maybe summer school, etc.. I know that none may sound very fun but teachers don't work the entire year. And AGAIN..not trying to rile any feathers...and I know I know most teachers do things during summer regarding their job...but they could find time to make more money if they really wanted more money. Now I do think some schools are probably top heavy (admin salaries)...which could go to rising salary but I still don't know if it would be all that much considering the number of employees in a school district. Even smaller schools.
  19. I think so too.
  20. Guilty. And yes the only reason my opinion on this hasn't changed is that I see college coaches doing it the same exact way as it was done when I played in hs/college. Even the younger college coaches.. Do you think Shaka Smart doesn't yell at his players? I'm pretty sure he knows the game pretty well. On staff at several D1 schools (including under Billy Donovan at Florida) before getting is start at VCU. I think that ALL athletes should be held to the same standard as those on the highest of levels. Obviously not at the same skill set...but I'd be proud to know that a high school kid is being treated the way Coach K treats his guys. And again..nowhere near the same skill level. But maybe these high school kids aren't being yelled at for missing shots or turning the ball over...but being yelled at due to lack of effort or repetitive mistakes that shouldn't be made. I don't know because I don't attend any practices so I couldn't say one way or another why they're getting yelled at. Getting yelled at should be expected if/when the coach feels as though a player isn't giving maximum effort or making mistakes that they shouldn't make. Even yelling with excitement. Real basketball coaches are yellers...if you want to win you might better accept it. Or don't. it's whatever to me..
  21. Sheesh. No way I could coach..
  22. So Lumberton kids can't take a butt chewing either? Hmmmm
  23. Well...that's not the reason I asked for the example. I wanted to know your opinion of what constitutes unnecessary yelling. You gave me several. Did I argue that those things don't happen? Actually, I didn't. I just said that if those examples are your examples then my opinion is that those examples are mild... Pretty sure that's what I typed. But again..if that is happening the way you say it is then I'm confident that the school would do something about it. And since they obviously haven't...that makes me believe that the stories you're being told may be a little exaggerated. Which makes perfect sense.
  24. Honestly, that seems pretty mild to me. I don't believe for one second that there is any coach that is employed at any school that just screams YOU SUCK to the kids that they coach...for "no apparent reason" I'm guessing..? I believe that a kid probably gets their feelings hurt because they were told that something they did sucked...or was garbage.. So the kid exaggerates on the story to their parents and then the parents exaggerate a little more to whoever else. Maybe this is why I don't coach. I doubt these little snowflake kids could play for me. But aside from all that...any coach that you say does a lot of "unnecessary yelling"..have you actually sat in on a practice? Or is this strictly what was said by one of the kids?
  25. No, I agree. I've been throwing around different possibilities myself and I truly don't know how it'll end up.
