Silsbee vs Argyle 4A State Semi Final
oldschool2 replied to aTmfan06's topic in High School Boys Basketball
Refs can NOT influence the outcome of a game. They can definitely influence the outcome of possessions/calls which can change momentum. Like state earlier...refs can't make one team make shots or another team miss shots. There were 32 minutes of game time and literally any one sinlge mistake that Center made could've made the difference in the game. How many free throws did Center miss? Or easy shots? Unforced turnovers?.... Get out of here with that nonsense. That is a very poor excuse for losing a game. "I sat close to a lady that stood behind the bench that heard the ref tell the coach...." Give me a break. Tell you what. Let's just blame the Russians. -

Who said anything about "Stall" ball? I'm not talking about bringing the ball up the court slowly...or burning a minute of game time before making a shot. A good team can push the ball up the floor very quickly with 1 or 2 passes, and if they don't have an opportunity for an easy transition bucket they can pull the ball out and set up an offense and kill you with discipline. And after a shot goes up if the offensive team sends 1 or 2 back to slow/stop easy transition buckets on the other end then the team isn't having to "race back on defense" the whole game. I can promise you...pressure full court defense and trying to outsprint the other team in order to get layups every possession can be just as detrimental to the team doing it if it isn't working. If that style isn't working then Silsbee will burn a lot of unnecessary energy when they didn't have to. Notice I said IF... I'm not implying they shouldn't do what they do. And I'm not saying it can't win them the game. I'm just saying that it might not be as effective as is has been thus far. -

I'm biased toward "discipline basketball". I'm not saying that I hope Silsbee loses...or that I think Argyle will win. I'm just saying that I'm a fan of the way basketball is played when athleticism isn't the only thing that matters. I'm also not saying that the game hasn't adapted to benefit bigger, stronger, faster players. Because it has. I'm just saying that there is a reason that a VAST majority of college and pro teams play basketball of the old ways. Man to man defense, half court offense. I love it. Both styles are fun, though...to watch and to play. I just think that one style has lasted through the ages, and the other was a flash in the pan and is now dying. -

When I said I was confused it was sarcasm. I do that. The reason I did it this time was because your statement contradicted itself. A ref turning a blind eye to something implies that a violation occurred but the ref chose not to act on it. Pushing off and drawing a foul or committing a moving screen violation is basically a turnover. Blaming a game on refs is what is ignorant. I'm not saying you did. But someone did which is the only reason we're having this conversation. Some missed calls will not make the different between a loss and a 20+ point win. Perhaps the refs weren't turning a blind eye...maybe Argyle did it so well that it didn't appear to be a violation. Which would make sense to me being how they are a disciplined team...as you stated. Well coached teams can make things like that seem legal. Which in fact makes it legal. If the whistle doesn't blow then there is no violation. Regardless of what anyone thinks. Either way, it doesn't matter. Argyle was the best team at the regional tournament when it mattered. That's all that matters. No surprise to what happens next...2 opposite styles of play are about to square off. Silsbee will no doubt try to speed the game up. Argyle will most likely try to slow it down. I think whichever team is successful at doing that will probably win. We'll see what happens. -

Well, which team are they? Are they the team at Commerce that got away with a lot of mistakes "those refs did seem to turn a blind eye to a lot of things argyle did" or are they a team that people need to "Don't look for them to make many careless mistakes."? Because now I'm confused. -

I said this last week: There always seems to be a team (recently) that this style just doesn't work against. I personally thing that the SeTx staple of (run em into the ground) is a thing of the past when it comes to winning it all. It's been a decade or so since all you had to do was scare a team into turning it over and win a state championship. I'm not saying Silsbee isn't good enough to win it all...or that they won't. I'm just saying that there will come a time in the season where they'll have to play basketball and not press a team into oblivion. We will see if I'm correct or not. It's looking to me like Silsbee will have to pull out their half court game. -
In theory. However, if a defense is sound then they'll be able to double/triple a post player and close out to the ball well enough and/or rotate well enough to at least pester a perimeter shooter. If nothing else...force an offensive player to hesitate just long enough for the defense to get back into position. Perhaps BH has leaned too heavily on their UConn commit post player too many times in tight games. Which would be understandable. I don't know. Perhaps Canyon isn't 30 points better...I'll give credit to the man that is now coaching for his 19th state championship as a head coach. I would think that someone with that much success will know exactly how to prepare his team for any kind of star player.
-
Gotcha. 10-4
-
I didn't say they won't. I was just disagreeing with a previous statement of turning the game into pressing and layup drills. I think that it will take more than THAT to get it done.
-
Let's agree to disagree. There always seems to be a team (recently) that this style just doesn't work against. I personally thing that the SeTx staple of (run em into the ground) is a thing of the past when it comes to winning it all. I'm not saying he's best player. But I think I can make an assumption that the coach had him starting for a reason. And if he is indeed committed to Baylor then that reason is justified. I think I can also make an assumption that if that particular kid is taken out of the lineup then the team will not be quite the same. I think that's a fair assumption. If Baylor University loses a starter then they are not quite the same team....and every backup they have is a D1 player. So..
-
I don't know who the backup is. I'm assuming that when the Baylor commit was suspended that A) he was a starter. and B someone is now playing in the game instead of him. Unless they are running 4 on 5. Which...I doubt they are. So whoever was on the bench when the Baylor commit was on the floor that in now on the floor...was the backup. I don't know these kids...you tell me.
-
Saw that. Very impressive to have multiple kids with major D1 offers on the same 4A school. If they don't win it all within a year or 2 then there is something very wrong.
-
Never mind...just found it.
-
Where is Jordyn Adams going to play his college ball?
-
No offense to you, the kid, the team, or anyone...but you're basing results on what they have done without him and what his backup has done without him against teams that aren't very good. What will happen when/if they see a team that gives them a game is yet to be determined. Saying a team is pretty much the same team without their best player is just not true. I know this is high school...and circumstances are a lot different. But I like to use the Miami Heat as an example for a situation somewhat similar to this. They went from NBA finals (multiple times) to not even making the playoffs in 1 year's time just by losing their best player. Same coach...still had D Wade and Bosh (NBA All Stars). Take 1 person out of the lineup and they go from best in the East to 9th or worse in the East.
-
There's no denying that Silsbee is good. And there's no denying that Silsbee probably has a very deep bench. I'm just saying that Silsbee hasn't had to play their "top 5" players in 2 months. All thru district and even thus far in the playoffs Silsbee could've played any combination of 5 players at any time and still won by 50. Now I'm not a betting man...but if I were I'd bet that Silsbee has their best 5 on the floor of a close game down the stretch of the game. They haven't had to do that in 2 months....like I said. But the last time they DID have to do that, there's a good chance that their Baylor commit was in the game. If I'm wrong then I'm wrong...but I doubt it. So there are 2 points to my argument here: First point is that they haven't had to use their "top 5" for a close game situation in 2 months. Second point is that they are missing one of their top 5 players. I don't care how deep their bench is...that's gonna make a difference. Will it make enough of a difference? Yet to be seen.
-
How exactly did you determine that I was comparing anyone to anyone...I said that Silsbee beat them at a point in their season that they were used to winning close games. They haven't played a team good enough to give them a close game in 2 months. And if you think that being down a D1 commit won't have an impact on ANY high school team then you don't know very much about basketball.
-
I'm not saying what will happen one way or another. But...Silsbee beat Lincoln by 6 early in the year at a time when Silsbee was used playing and winning close games. Since then they've had 2 months of beating the crap out of bad teams...and Silsbee is down 1 Baylor commit since then. just saying.

The year that HJ had a great season (like 3 rounds deep) didn't they have several kids that played college ball? Like Rice (D1)? -

Bill Belichick would've gone 0-10 with that team...with that schedule. He may schedule some schools preseason that are "easier". But they're in a bind district wise unless they get some talent. Even if they go back to the northern district...Ok so replace LM, HC, HS...with Kville, Wville, Coldspring, Buna....yeah good luck. Better off where they are. At least LM is falling apart (relatively speaking).
