Colmesneil breaking its contracts for football season?
oldschool2 replied to jv_coach's topic in High School Football
I'm thinking the only way around it is to not take the job. Double edged sword. Someone applies wanting to be a head coach but the schedule is already set. So...take the job knowing you're going to get embarrassed? Because let's face it...we all have a pretty good idea (most of the time) which teams are good and which aren't. We at least know what they had the previous year, how many returning, and how many lost.So have to weigh being an AD/HC vs getting your brains beat in. Don't know.. -

Well, I was thinking that... Just making sure I didn't miss something. -

I didn't say that...did I? Nor did I imply it. But I do have enough that work in the school system to know that even if he had it on good authority that there would be a job available to him around the holidays...it doesn't get announced until there is actually a piece of paper with a name signed to it. Plain and simple..if he hadn't signed a letter of intent to hire or a contract then he didn't know for a fact he had a job. Are you saying that he should've had enough confidence in "someone's word" that he had another job lined up? Enough confidence to put his family at risk (potentially) by not being employed? Because I can assure you that had he announced in December that he was leaving for Newton then Kirbyville would not have renewed his contract. Then a chance is taken on not having a job...You did say "It's BS if he knew he was leaving way after the holidays and just told his staff last week". Did you not? Ask your family and friends that work in the school system if that would have been the best thing to do. -

I read that. But there is a difference between thinking a job would come open and a job actually being open. If the Newton AD speculated that a job would open he could've approached Neece about it, but I'm willing to bet that there wasn't actually a job opening to be filled around the holidays. If Neece new for a fact that he had a job (offered, approved by the board, accepted, signed a contract) then he would've in fact BEEN at Newton after the holidays. I don't think educators can legally be under more than one contract at the same time. Which means he didn't know for a fact until now. Hence the reason that maybe he didn't tell anyone until his name was actually signed on a contract or intent to hire at Newton. My first wife was a teacher and I have enough friends and family in it to know how it works. Trust me...they don't resign (most of the time) until their name is on a contract somewhere else. -

Most coaches wait until they actually have a job (on paper) before they announce to ANYONE that they are leaving. Would you announce to the world that you were leaving your current job before you had another one? -

So you're ok with a kid not being held to the same behavior standard? Behaving in a classroom/lunch/hallway setting pulls a lot of weight when it comes to whether or not a kid is allowed to take part in athletics. Conforming to school policy is something that shouldn't be allowed to be avoided if you're taking part in a school athletics program. -

Maybe he just wanted to leave. And maybe he didn't want to be HC anymore. Being an asst at Newton Football isn't a bad choice if he wanted out of head coaching.. Hard to put a value on winning. -

West Sabine head coach steps down

I would love nothing more than Coach Stark to head back to WS. And then schedule Hardin....and then beat Hardin 70-0. I'm sure he wouldn't do that because he's probably a better coach than I would be. In terms of being professional, I mean. But it sure would bring some satisfaction to me. -

That's a negative, ghost rider. But I care plenty about kids. Most important thing they need sometimes is tough love. Teach accountability. They can either learn young, or as an adult. But it will be learned. Promis you that. I read the whole thing. I have no problem with reading comprehension or understanding what you said. I understood it. But after you said they should do the athletics class you spent a paragraph explaining why they should be given a "first chance" because of so many others who were given second chances. Just exactly HOW am I holding anything against anybody because of their parents? If they miss a work out / practice, they don't play. Period. I don't care what the reason is. If a kid has 2 parents neither of whom own a car..they are still required to show up to practice? "I know you were all required to be here at a certain time, and stay the whole time. But Johnny's parents couldn't get him here on time. So we're gonna give him a pass." You can't have leniency for someone because of something they can't control. And are you kidding me? Would I bench a kid if their father committed murder? What does that have to do with anything the kid did? Bad situation no doubt. But to assume I would bench a kid because of some kind of vendetta against a parent is really kind of stupid. In my opinion a parent must not want their kids involved in school sports very bad if they homeschool them. I understand completely why they would homeschool them...but then don't get mad when they can't do what public school students get to do. -

Nope. You'd be assuming wrong. Please think for a second about what you're saying. The student gets to be enrolled in the athletics class ONLY because they are a homeschool student that wants to play on the sports team... Answer this. What if the team holds a tryout and the homeschool kid doesn't make the team? Or the homeschool kid refuses to adhere to the policies of the athletics class and fails? Do they get lunch/breakfast if they were in the athletics class? What about special Ed services? I could go on and on... Bottom line. This is a terrible idea all the way around. There is a reason that activities that involve STUDENT/athletes are for students only. And they are a privilege. Not a right. Even students enrolled in the school could be denied the right to be an athlete. But I know...my opinion is irrelevant. If this does become law then they'll get to be part of the team..I guess. BUT. Coaches make the final call on who plays and how much. Good luck getting off of the bench after missing 250 minutes of workouts each week with the team/coach because there is no way a homeschool student would get to enroll in a class for one period a day. -

Wow. You avoided the point altogether. I'm aware they would have to follow rules of UIL which require a physical for certain grades. I'm talking about: A- A kid that is NOT A STUDENT showing up to a school to participate in a CLASS in which he/she is not enrolled. B- A Kid participating in activities in which the other STUDENTS that are ENROLLED in the class are covered as far as liability. If a STUDENT drops a weight on their foot and shatters their bones, the school is covered. If a kid that is NOT A STUDENT does the same thing then are legally in some trouble. -

Do you know of many schools that would let a kid (not a student of the school) show up and participate in a class? Especially an athletics class...where there is running and weight lifting. Because I don't know of any. There are some legal / safety issues there when talking about kids that aren't enrolled as students. -

Athletics period is a CLASS that happens during the school day. A class that is used every single day for the team as a preparation of sorts. -

Do you honestly think that I would give a crap about a younger sibling doing something better than an older sibling? I'll say it again. If I were coaching...a kid that missed the athletic period EVERY SINGLE DAY would not come off of the bench. I truly do not care what they do or claim to be doing on their own time. Did you play sports? Because if you ever missed a practice and told the coach " but coach, I did my own practice. Just ask my dad" that wouldn't fly. Not with any coach I ever had. The UIL may say that homeschool kids are allowed to play...but when or how much they play is 100% up to the coach. And every coach I know would not allow a kid to miss that much time that the rest of the team has to attend...and play. So there you go. Nothing personal. And nothing against homeschool kids. But, if they miss any type of workout, walk thru, meeting, film session, etc. that every other teammate is at then they don't deserve to play in the game. -

My particular response wasn't a knee jerk reaction. If I'm coaching...and a kid misses the athletic period every single day, they won't come off the bench. UIL could make me allow them to participate, but UIL has zero say in who plays or how much they play. -

That's fine...and very well may be the case. But there is more to consider than just the academic side of it. Homeschool kids are not held to the same standard of dress, behavior, attendance, etc...like those that attend a public school and actually have to show up on time every single day to 7/8 different classes. Learn how to interact with teachers/students a certain way while staying out of trouble (according to the school policy). PLUS.. I can't get past the idea of a kid playing that doesn't go through the athletics period / workouts every single day. Or ever. I can promise you that if I were coaching and had a homeschool kid on the roster the parents would be constantly wondering why the kid never came off the bench. And I would say that it's because he/she hadn't worked out during the period all week. If you think I wouldn't then you apparently don't know me very well. If an athletic period is 50 minutes long...5 days a week...for 36 weeks. That's 9000 minutes (give or take some days) of working out, walk thru, film watching, game preparation... that a homeschool kid will miss. Yeah. Wouldn't play for me. -

Absolutely a kid should be allowed to play if he/she homeschools. As long as the kid follows the same exact curriculum as the one provided by the school, completes the same assignments as the classes offered at the school, all work is graded by the teachers of record at the school, and the kid goes to the athletic period every single day, participates in the same offseason programs as provided in the athletic period, follows the same guidelines as the athletic policy provided by the athletic director.... Oh wait. They can't do all that unless they're enrolled in the school. Sorry for your luck.
