Art Briles completely exonerated by the NCAA
Cougar14.2 replied to Separation Scientist's topic in High School Football
No denying he knew, and he should've done something. The entire administration knew too though. From the New York Times in regards to Patty Crawford who Baylor hired as their Title IX coordinator during the scandal: "She eventually quit in disgust, but only after she established protocols and tabulated 417 allegations of sexual assault and harassment over several years, 90 percent of which had nothing to do with athletics". "It was utterly overwhelming, and football was definitely not the worst." Freshman girl at Baylor gets assaulted and ask one of the Baylor lawyers if by reporting it she would be expelled for premarital relations? Lawyer's answer, "Maybe, you should remain silent and concentrate on your work". Briles gets the wrap because he was the head coach of the most notable sports program, not because it was the worst. Once Briles and Starr were fired Baylor's board of regents ordered the Pepper Hamilton law firm "Not to write a report of its findings". So who's really worse? The guy that looked the other way on 7% of the assault allegations or the administration that covered for 100% of them? Baylor literally had athletes killing each other not long before the assault scandal and got drug by the NCAA because of it. I believe the administration made a conscious decision to look the other way well before Briles got there in hopes of avoiding another huge scandal at a supposedly Christian institution. -

Briles did. He also has a compliance office and a director of football personnel/operations that could’ve nixed it. They didn’t due to the leeway he was given for winning. -

Briles has to take the rap, as well he should, but 51% of the issue at hand is Baylor’s fault. The brass at Baylor knew what was happening but had gotten relevant again and were like, “Do we say anything? Is this how it works at good programs now?” I personally wouldn’t have any issue with Briles leading my program. Maybe he did have a win at all cost attitude but at other institutions that mentality would be praised. The cost of winning at Baylor was recruiting players other schools probably did their due diligence and stayed away from. I agree it still doesn’t absolve him of being a POS human being but hiring a POS may be a cost other schools are willing to pay to win? -
Paetow is going to be pretty solid on the defensive side of the ball but I really can't foresee anybody stopping that two-headed monster Manvel has in the backfield. I think that's the main reason DC's ranked them #2 in D1. Manvel should also be better on defense too though. If Manvel hits at the qb position and Cedar Park doesn't have anything for them I don't see anybody beating them before they play the Denton Ryan/Highland Park winner in the title game.

No guessing about it. You definitely missed it. IDK why you put "dissed" in quotes like that's what I actually said though? I said Crosby is referred to as "average" here. Ask Bigdog and BHfan how "average" Crosby is, plus we don't have a state title so that makes us even more "average". These are things I was told repeatedly last year as well as a bunch of prior years. Being newer it's not really your fault you missed it.

The only thing I would ask is if PNG and TC are playing for fourth, who is playing for third? I think you're making the assumption that it will be BH but with them breaking in a new coach and no real offseason, I'm not so sure? TC and PNG both had awful defenses last year but the only bright spot on TC's whole team graduated. They have a stud sophomore back that's going to replace McCall but making the assumption that both defenses will be pretty equal I would put PNG as the clear favorite over TC simply because of what they normally are on offense. To you point though, I would've said the same thing last year and they lost by 4 tds.

That's the consensus on some of the other boards around the state. If Crosby comes out and handles Carthage the question on this board will be "What is wrong with Carthage" though. Interesting how your neighbors view you vs other teams from around the state. Here Crosby is "average" but in other places we're "fast, physical and well coached". FB Marshall is talking about running it back with Crosby while Crosby is over here about to fall off, lol. Interesting to say the least.

I expect Paetow to be much improved over last year. They bring back a bunch of key players and another big enrollment class should help mitigate the losses they had. If they don't have another season ruined by Covid like they did last year I think there's a good possibility they play Manvel for the DC week 10. Big advantage for them getting to line up in 5A for one more year while they're probably 400-500 kids over the D1 cap.

Was surprising to me too. FBM actually got 3rd with Longview being the runner up. Direct translation to the field is that they struggled with Branch’s speed while Crosby was fast enough to contain theirs.

You’re right. A blind squirrel may find a nut. He’s not finding one four weeks in a row against an undefeated #5, #4, #3 and #7 when nobody else has all year though. You’re saying “anybody in their right mind . . . “, but Crosby came into last year preseason top 10. DC’s said we were loaded and we eventually started playing like it. You look at the last 10-15 years of 2nd round losses Crosby has had and you figure we would learn something, mainly to play defense. The law of averages says we’re eventually going to win some. As far as last year’s run there wasn’t really anything flukish about it. We had just as good or better personnel than everybody we lined up against in the playoffs except Aledo. Again, I point to the 4x100M state title to highlight what type of athletes Crosby had on the field. I said three years ago teams like Crosby would be huge benefactors of splitting the class into two divisions. In 2015 Crosby was 11-0 when they faced FB Ridge Point in the 2nd round. Carlos Grace had torn his ACL which already put us at a huge disadvantage but either way we were blown out once again in the 2nd round of the 5A-D2 playoffs. The very next year Ridge Point went 11-1 and lost by a FG in the 2nd round of the 6A-D1 playoffs. We were in a 5A-D2 playoff game with nearly 1,000 less kids. That was one of the more extreme examples but those are the type situations we would run into. At the end of the day a loss is a loss though. The UIL gave Crosby a break with realignment and we were good enough to be able to capitalize a few years later, mainly because of the increased impact of our personnel with the cut down enrollments. As long as we’re in D2 Crosby is going to be a factor. A good season for us this year would be going 9-4/10-3 with a third round loss to FB Marshall but two or three years from now don’t be surprised to see us right back in the title game if we stay in D2.

True, but the whole issue here is that they’re going to give it to him now just based on the hype. Meaning he can cash in before they know he can’t play. Same with Bryce Young at Alabama this year. He’s the starter for now but may get beaten out down the road. Doesn’t matter though, he’s already signed nearly $1M in NIL deals. [Hidden Content] I can see a bunch of big time recruits like Ewers reclassifying down the road to take advantage of financial opportunities. I know if I was one of these players’ “agent” I would want him to. Offers may not be there if the kid tears his ACL his senior year. Probably see more kids sitting out like Jaydon Blue did this year too, have to protect near future earning potential.
-
Exactly. Before last year he would’ve said “Crosby will never play for a state championship anytime soon.” I hope we don’t have to make another run like we did last year. I hope we get to play two 4th place teams, a second and third place team like we did in ‘14. We got the district champion rounds 2-6 this year.

We’ve won just as many as Manvel? I really only count state titles post PVIL, I think it more accurately reflects the modern era. In that case I saw zero for the four Port Arthur schools listed. Lol, it’s crazy that when a school has a supporter articulate enough to highlight the work the kids and staff put in that sarcasm is the de facto reply. You would think they could at least conjure a formative rebuttal. Undoubtedly not though?
-
I think when he says it's "unfortunate" he's alluding to the Texas high school NIL rules that would negate his eligibility which is his whole reason for leaving. Not unfortunate that he's going to either make money or compete for a state title. I think he's being honest that he would've preferred to stay but is being forced to make the smarter decision by taking the money instead. I always revert back to "What if they find out down the road he can't play?". He would've missed out on a huge payday for another semester of high school memories he probably already has plenty of.

Wow, this is a Nostradamus level epiphany right here. Now tell me the reason they would want to give this particular teenager seven figures if he couldn't play football?
-
My sentiments exactly. We were going to scrimmage the Cowboys but they backed out because they were worried about Dak being ready for the pass rush coming the ankle injury.

Crosby vs Mosquitoes 8/19 in Angleton

So basically you’re saying over the last decade Crosby has been blown out once each by Pearland Dawson, Elgin, Cedar Park, FB Ridge Point, FB Marshall, Manvel and Aledo? Outside of that they’ve they’ve pretty much mopped the floor with the Houston metro. Even though we’ve literally cleaned out all the other 5As in the Houston area outside of Manvel, FBM and Foster we “usually get our clocks cleaned” when we head west of the San Jacinto? There a WHOLE bunch of teams west of the river that would beg to differ. Doing some rough math our win percentage is about .750 against Houston area teams the last 10 years or so.

Two regional titles in the last 7 years sounds better to me but to each his own. You can reach all the way back to '57 if you need to but it still won't change the trajectory Crosby's on or the surrounding THSF landscape. We got a late start after Brown vs Board of Education and were hampered with Jimmy Dickey. Looks like we may have all that stuff figured out now.
-
Over these recent alignments Crosby is averaging about a 5-6% growth rate. Taking an average of 5.5% x our stated enrollment of 1,818 would put us at 1,918. The current D2 cutoff is Waltrip at 1,918. I'm hoping the D2 cap moves up to about 1,940 but there's a good chance Crosby has outperformed it's recent growth numbers and could come in closer to 1,950 though. Here's to hoping we're the Highland Park of D2 this year.
-
Dayton is still Crosby's rival. BH is making some headway into the conversation. The team that gives Crosby the most issues on average is Nederland though. They don't run that same gimmick stuff Vidor does but they slow play us with the just enough from the run game and frustrate us like Vidor does. I still think Texas City actually IS but Nederland also plays the closest to Crosby in terms of talent.
-
Well, let me know when you at least win the region instead of getting there and getting donkey stomped again? Just stay tuned though. The UIL is about to let us stay in D2 with nearly 2,000 kids next alignment, they'll be the most talented teams you've seen on the field at Crosby. Go ahead and get your subscription to Fox Sports Southwest if you don't already. That's the channel they show the 6th playoff game on.

That's not the case with Ewers though. He's earned everything that's being awarded him right now by working his butt off the become the #1 recruit in the country. I agree it's stupid to buy a BMW after only inheriting $100k and paying the inheritance tax. That's probably somebody that never had anything though. True, Ewers may pull a Manziel and just go off the deep end but already being from Southlake I doubt his support team is going to allow him to make bad decisions(Yes, I know JF came from money too). I think if you give kids an appetizer(NIL money) it sturdies the focus on the main course which would be graduation/good job or the League. Players often make bad decisions in school because they're broke. I had a teammate in college that broke into the convenience store in the dorms so he could get something to eat. This is after he sent most of his Pell grant money home so his mom could keep the lights on. He ended up going to jail for 5 days and being suspended for the season opener. Couple grand on an NIL deal from Daktronics probably would've prevented that situation and saved his record.

Unless you're a SLC fan, how is this a bad thing? A 17 year old has seven figures sitting in from of him, to some families that is life changing. For the player, he gets some money up front. What if he tears his achilles next Spring and end up getting beat out by another 5 star and never plays, meaning he never hits the league and earns the money some are saying he should wait on? For Ohio State it's definitely a win. Your prize recruit doesn't have to risk injury his senior year and you get a head start working with him. Everybody is always for capitalism until it starts to delve into areas that they don't like. As of right now NIL is the most fair way to compensate the employees who are bringing in hundreds of millions into some of these companies.

Alright, cleared out my inbox like Grad said. Maybe try now. I had some good conversations in there too.
