Fort Bend Hightower 41 Port Arthur Memorial 34/FINAL
Cougar14.2 replied to WOSgrad's topic in High School Football
As long as Angleton doesn’t get corona’d out of another season again next year their district is going to be even stronger. Without the COVID situation that kept hitting their program they probably finish a very close third behind Foster. Manvel won’t be as good because they lose their qb but both of those rbs are juniors. They probably won’t move up either, they can add 200+ kids and still not hit the cutoff. Crosby has been growing between 60-100 kids per alignment, 100 more would put us right on the cutoff number which I think will go up so we probably have at least two more years in D2. Paetow will almost for sure be 6A. I read somewhere they’re going to already be over capacity by 2023. Katy ISD gave the kids from the neighborhood their own school and may have created a west side version of Westfield, just with a little better academics. Hightower is hit or miss and may not even make the playoffs but they have those Mo City kids and you see they don’t have an issue lining up with anybody from 9-5A. I think they’ll be more on the miss side though. -
It’s hard to tell how good they are because there’s zero flash to anything they do. Take into consideration that C.E. King played Atascocita closer than they played Huntsville on the scoreboard. King scored almost twice as many points against North Shore’s defense as they did against the Hornets. King dropped 66 on Beaumont Westbrook in a blowout win, they scored 12 on Huntsville. Now, to you point about them not seeming dominant they only scored 25 points in a 12 point win over Montgomery while Crosby dropped 55 on them. Montgomery also scored 52 points on Crosby compared to 13 on Huntsville. Your offense doesn’t have to have dominant numbers if people just can’t score against you.

Their offense isn’t as good as it was the last couple of years when Matt Southern wasn’t hurt. Southern was the coach’s son and played very Haynes King-ish in terms of just always making the right decisions. Their offense does look more athletic than last year but I just think that’s because how their new qb operates. That defense is filthy though. Those two interior linemen just destroy so many plays before they ever get going. I think their overall team is better than last year but if you have a qb that can buy a little time and some receivers that can get down the field they’ll give up some plays on the outside. Does BH have that though, considering their qb will have a lot less time to operate than he even did against Crosby?

Just to be clear, when you say “. . . hung with Longview. . . “, you’re taking about a scrimmage, correct? IDK about Smoaky but we don’t count those on this website.

Nobody said Marshall was as good as last year. That’s why they went .500 and missed the playoffs. The point was they ran through that district last year and got hammered in the first round. TH struggled for three quarters with LC who gave up over 40ppg in their three district losses. I haven’t see anybody say Crosby is unbeatable either. Your earlier comment works both ways. Y’all don’t have a handle on what Crosby is or isn’t either.
-
The point I was making is that Marshall went 7-0 last year against the same teams Texas High went 7-0 against this year the addition of Marshall and lost to 4th place Huntsville in the first round. Tells me the district isn’t as strong as maybe the record indicates. Looked that way three quarters in when you were only up 17-7 on 4th place Lake Creek.

Well, these are the situations you end up in when you continuously lose district championship games the last contest of the year. Instead of playing Pine Tree like Nederland is, Crosby gets to play the team that beat them 44-0 in district play earlier this year. I think the one positive for Crosby is the way Huntsville was able to maul Marshall in bi-district after they went 7-0 in the same district last year. Marshall didn’t have a Clayton Smith either though. We’ll see how Crosby deals with what I feel is the most dominant player in 5A. Kid is like D.K. Metcalf on offense and Jadeveon Clowney on defense.

After losing to this version of Nederland you’re not going to to get any argument from me on that point

Y’all had your best night, Crosby had their worst. The exact same thing has happened multiple times to Crosby in recent years. Congratulation again, your tram was prepared to take advantage. I still think Crosby is the better team as evident by what we were able to do their 3rd place team versus what y’all were able to do to their 4th place team. Y’all happened to be better the night the Crosby vs Nederland game took place. Again congratulations. You can tell how big that win was when it’s what you choose to revisit after a bi-district victory you couldn’t get last year. Again congratulations, Ned’s kids played very well that night.

Crosby 66 Fort Bend Willowridge 0/FINAL

Yes, and prior to that they were undefeated and averaging about 50 per game hammering people. They had an off night when Jaylen Henderson ran the QB draw about 40 times for like 250+ and kept the ball away from King. Crosby played well that week against King and still lost, the only reason we went 5 deep and King didn’t is because they went D1 in the split. -

Crosby had higher level individual players when Rio was coaching but Prieto has more overall talent. I don’t think it’s surprising he’s getting the results he is. Rio also had good defenses between 2014-2016 and had a pretty good defense in 2018 until Howard got hurt and the backup qb couldn’t move the ball and became a turnover machine. But yeah, I do think this philosophy gives us an extremely good chance to beat Texas High next week. -

Yes, that was three undefeated district championship opportunities ago and it also wasn’t a shocker we lost. We were on the road and C.E. King had Trayveon Williams. -

No we didn’t, we lost to PNG the next week. We’re also about to play a team a lot better than the PNG team we lost to that year. -

Glad to see we didn’t completely 2017 it. Time to get ready for Texas High. -
Not really, unlike BH Crosby has been in these situations a lot in recent years. This is the third time I’ve seen us do this so I’m pretty used to it by now. One year we lost a basketball game to PNG in bi-district and one year we played a pretty solid game against Cedar Park in the semis until Cotton went down, so we’ll see what happens.
-
Tonight was the 4th time in the last 7 years that Crosby has come into the last game of district play undefeated. They are now 1-4 in those games, and once again like the 2017 loss to New Caney it has a negative playoff impact. Congrats to Nederland on their district championship, that’s the way you come in and take advantage of Crosby being Crosby.
-
That’s true, the Twins were probably the best two players Crosby has ever had at the high school level. Especially Austin who rushed for over 6k yards career yards. Aston Walter went 24-11 as a starter because of the defenses his offenses played with. His backup, Tristen Cotton, went 24-3 over the next two years because of the defenses he played with. Some of the winning margins may not have been as wide but the chances of beating those Cotton teams were a lot less than those Walter teams who gave up big numbers regularly. Crosby doesn’t have a great offense this year, it’s a good offense enhanced by the personnel we have and what may be a great defense. I said all that to say I’d rather play those Walter teams versus Crosby’s better defensive teams.

Based on the history over the years of the Nederland fans on this site like you I’m just truly great you guys allowed us to beat you even once. Those victories rank right up there with Beaumont Ozen. I’m thinking coach Prieto might let our guys go out there too? I’m not sure how we would be favored over a team like Nederland but I guess that why you play?
-
I was thinking the same thing ever since I found out the best defense resides in Nederland? Plus y’all have that state championship from the ‘50s and that great mid-county tradition. I’m really not seeing how Crosby has ever beaten Nederland, especially since Vidor has the same number of wins against us?
-
The last time I remember Nederland having a defense Bulldog fans were high on they came to Crosby and give up 56, lost by 21. Gave up less than 10ppg in district play that year. That's irrelevant now but I would point out that in order for Crosby to score 55 on this version of Nederland they only have to be 20 points better than BH who we've already beaten by 27. I don't think Crosby will get 55 either but it's not because of your defensive stops, it's because Nederland will play at a slow pace to try to keep the ball away from Crosby's offense.

Best defense resides in Port Arthur Tx.
Cougar14.2 replied to Mr. Buddy Garrity's topic in High School Football
Doesn’t suck but Ned has given up 18.2ppg during district play to Crosby’s 7.3ppg. Definitely the two best defenses in the district and the main reason the teams are playing for the district championship. -
If FB Marshall only scores 70 on PNG it will be because it’s halftime. As long as FBM doesn’t want PNG to score, they won’t. Hard to see how anybody beats FBM until they play an Aledo or Ennis in the title game. They’re know for being pretty much the fastest team in 5A annually, I’ve never seen one of their teams with as much overall speed as their current one.

The last opportunity Crosby had to finish as undefeated district champions was 2017. We were 9-0 and heavily favored and lost at home to New Caney 63-38. More impactful part was that loss dropping us into the D2 #2 seed which set up the 72-69 loss to PNG in bi-district. Nederland always matches up well with Crosby. They usually have just enough personnel wise and play at that slower pace that seems to complicate things for the Cougars. Crosby has been the best team in 12-5A-D2 all year and has a chance to finish off their most impressive run through district play that I can remember. Ned is trying to prove they’re the best team in the district at the end of the year. This is exactly where both teams were hoping to be when the season started.

Crosby has been ranked in the top 5 in the state at some point in the season 3 times over the past five years, ‘15, ‘17 and ‘18. May have gotten to #2 all three years. I’ve never felt we were really worthy of those rankings except ‘18 before Howard tore his ACL. I felt good about Crosby being #10 to start the season and I feel even better about it now based on how the season has played out.
