D'Vonta Hinton took an unofficial visit to Lubbock this weekend to take on the Spring Game. Soon afterwards he would commit to the Raiders making him their 5th 2015 Commit. Comments: "I went to the spring game yesterday and they showed me a lot of love," Hinton said. "Even random people I didn't even know, everyone there was just really nice. "After the game I talked to coach (Kliff) Kingsbury in his office and he said that they really liked me. He told me that I was the best inside linebacker they have seen on film and that I would be a perfect fit at Texas Tech." "The coaches have always told me that they believe in me even though I'm a shorter linebacker," Hinton said. "Coach Kingsbury told me that other undersized guys like Zach Thomas and Wes Welker came to Tech when nobody else believed in them, now they are household names headed to the NFL Hall of Fame." "They are building something special at Texas Tech," Hinton said. "I just feel comfortable there because a lot of the coaches actually played there and are younger. They have fun, listen to good music and I know you saw that dancing video the other day. "It was a lot of people for a spring game too. The facilities and uniforms were sick. I got to meet Will Smith and the quarterback commit for my class (Jarrett Stidham), he had seen my highlights and told me, 'We need that!'" "I met with some of the coaches this morning, then met individually with coach Curtis," Hinton said. "We sat down and talked for a little bit, then I told him that I wanted to commit. He was excited and we called Kingsbury to talk with him too. "I'm ecstatic about my decision."

Both teams showed flashes of good offense and defense. In the end, Quarterback Fred Nixon and Tight End Bradley Miller helped carry the Gold team to a 30-29 win on Saturday afternoon. With a combined 59 points, there was plenty of offense to go around, but the Gold team would use two timely interceptions by RS Freshman Cornerback Brandon McDowell and Free Safety Brandon Jones, respectively in the 3rd and 4th quarters, to help keep the Maroon offense out of the end zone long enough for a comeback. Chris Nutall would have the best day of any running back. He would pick up the most carries, 12, and rack up 115 yards with 2 touchdowns on the day averaging nearly 10 yards a pop. His 24 yard scoring run along the west sideline in the 2nd Quarter was an impressive feat in getting to the sideline and then rumbling forward through a DB at the goal line for the score. Connor White who had an effective day with his feet, for the Maroon team, would rush for 47 yards on 9 carries and 1 touchdown. His score would put the Maroon squad up 29-15 with 7:58 to go in the 4th quarter. Through the air he did get picked twice and finished 7 of 17 for 70 yards. This is when Fred Nixon and Bradley Miller would put it in high gear for the Gold team spurring on the comeback. Nixon, who will be the first to tell you he's had his struggles this spring, had the best performance of the QB's, going 7 of 11 for 79 yards and 1 touchdown through the air. He also added 67 yards on 8 rushes and another TD with his legs. "Just coming to it, the O-line held up well. Passing, running, open holes, I mean they just gave me a chance to execute," said Nixon. Nixon's performance opened some eyes and even after the dust had settled for the 2014 spring game, it could still be a 3 way battle to see who will be #2 come the fall. "I had my up's and down's during the spring. There's always room for improvement. I think I need to improve in the passing game. I can always improve in my reads, but I just always think there's room for improvement," said Nixon." Gold tight end Bradley Miller was a target and a weapon all game long. The senior always seemed to find a hole or space and he caught everything thrown his way. In the first drive of the game for the Gold, he would haul in a 24 yard catch from Tyler Jones down the east sideline would be a precursor of what was to come from him. He would finish with 5 catches for 142 yards and 2 scores on the afternoon. One of his catches was a nice grab off of a deflection over the middle of the field, near the 50 yard line. Miller would snag it and out run the defense to the corner of the south end zone. "I just want to do what I have to do to win games. In high school at Sealy, I won a lot of games and I want to continue to win some more games here. Whatever Coach Fran wants me to do, whether he wants me to block defensive ends, or run routes against linebackers, I'll do what he wants me to do. The top defensive highlight of the game was reserve Stinger Linebacker Brixx Hawthorne from the Maroon team. He would drop back into coverage and stick up his left hand to pluck a Tyler Jones pass out of mid air, one handed, and then rumble 84 yards down the sideline to complete the pick six. With Spring Practice now complete, Texas State will turn in the pads until the first week of August when fall camp opens up. The Bobcats open up their season at home on August 30th against Arkansas Pine-Bluff. [Hidden Content]

Defensive End Landon Beck of Early HS commits after Texas State's Spring Football Game on Saturday. The 6'3" 245 DE was named to Class 2A Second team All-State after recording 80 tackles, including 27 for a loss with 11 sacks, five forced fumble and 3 fumble recoveries. His Comments: "It was awesome, every time I go down there I have a good time. All the defensive coaches are really good guys. They seem genuine and real tight knit. I really want to be a part of that," "I just like the program, it's really well rounded. The campus has a river going through it! I kind of grew up around there. I just like everything about it. I get a good vibe from it," Before committing, Beck was drawing interest from TCU, UTSA, North Texas, SMU and UTEP. He is the first 2015 Commitment for the Bobcats. [Hidden Content]

Texas State makes a late push for 3 Star DT Jozie Milton out of Louisiana. 6'2" 291 Defensive Standout from Stillman Institute HS had an exceptional year where he accounted for 110 tackles including 35 for loss. He racked up a dozen sacks, forced six fumbles and recovered four. He is a heavily favored recruit that already holds several offers from SEC and Big XII schools. This is definitely a head scratcher as to why the Texas State staff feels the need to make an effort on drawing a player of his caliber to San Marvelous. Whatever the case you have to like the coaching staffs tenacity. Jozie currently holds offers from the likes of Georgia, South Carolina, Texas Tech, Illinois, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Arkansas, and many many more [Hidden Content]

The Bobcat Program is starting to grow on Tyrell and so far the chemistry remains mutual. "I'm really starting to build a relationship with coaches from both Texas State and UTSA, however Texas State is showing me the most interest and I really like how they get after it on defense," (Per Rival Site Bobcatreport) Other Spring Game Attendees this Saturday (As of Thursday) Missouri City Ke'shawn Ledet RB (prospect) Lindale athlete Kolton Pierce Ath (prospect) Rockwall - Heath defensive back David Richardson DB (prospect) Rockwall defensive tackle Jaylen Veasley - (prospect) Arlington Bowie defensive back Niko Small - (Offered) Early defensive end Landon Beck - (Offered) Prosper linebacker John Brannon - (2017 prospect) About Texas State Spring Game: Coined the Maroon and Gold game, the teams are chosen based off of a player driven draft earlier in the week before Saturday's Game. Stock is rising for 3 star DB Jaylon Lane of Nacogdoches. Yesterday he picked up more offers from Arkansas State, Utah State, Louisville and Kentucky He is expected to pay a visit with Texas A&M staff after practice this Friday. It should also be known that even though he didn't walk away from the 40 acres with an offer Saturday, he is still very high on UT and their Defensive Backs Coach Chris Vaughn. "They're going through the evaluation process. He told me if they were here a year ago, the offer would have already been there. But because it's a new staff and everything, they have to go down the checklist - have they seen the film, the character of me, has he seen me live? He's going to come see me this spring and I should be offered," Lane said.

Add 6'1" 181lb Jaylon Lane to the list of Texas State offers. This 3-star Corner from Nacogdoches recently visited San Marcos and Austin Texas this past weekend. Got a chance to go wade last Saturday on some new water. Soon as tide started pulling caught a limit of specks on Corky Original within the hr and left them biting. Buddy of mine went out there Wednesday and tallied up 2 more limits. Several trout were above the 21-22" mark, good solid fish.

It is now confirmed! Former Arkansas State defensive coordinator John Thompson met with Dennis Franchione. Soon after completing the interview Thompson was offered the defensive coordinator position and he accepted. This is good news for Bobcats......Thompson brings a wealth knowledge and lengthy resume consisting of 30 years experience at the collegiate level as both an assistant and head coach. Thompson was brought in by Guz Malzahn during his one year tenure and retained with Bryan Harsin before leaving also. He was not retained when Blake Anderson took reign earlier this year. Thompson was 2-0 in Bowl games as interim coach for Arkansas State. Here's a story [Hidden Content] John Thompson [Hidden Content]

Bruce Feldman of CBSSports is reporting that John Thompson will likely be offered to fill the vacant Defensive Coordinator Job soon. As it stands right now it's just hearsay, but expect a decision to be made soon. This comes after previous DC Craig Naivar left to join Stoops' staff at Kentucky on Friday. John Thompson's Resume Thompson has worked 26 seasons as a coordinator and was also the head coach at East Carolina for two years. Recognized as a top defensive mind, Thompson has worked as defensive coordinator or co-coordinator at Southeastern Conference schools Mississippi, Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina and LSU, as well as at Memphis, Southern Mississippi, Louisiana Tech and Northwestern State. Thompson has seen more than 40 of his defensive players drafted by, or sign with, National Football League teams. Forty-four of his defenders earned all-conference honors, five were named all-America, and one, former Northwestern State linebacker Gary Reasons, has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Other accolades: As the head coach at East Carolina in 2003-04, he coached three first-team all-conference players and seven all-freshman selections. Thompson was the defensive coordinator at Florida in 2002, when the Gators' pass defense was ranked seventh in the nation, allowing just 162.4 yards per game. He also spent two years at Arkansas, serving as co-defensive coordinator in 2000 and then defensive coordinator in 2001. In 2000, the Razorbacks were second in the nation in pass defense while leading the SEC in pass defense and total defense. The following year, Thompson helped lead Arkansas to the Cotton Bowl. ----------------------------------------------------------------- In 1990, he became the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech for two seasons before moving to Southern Miss as defensive coordinator in 1992. He was given additional responsibility as assistant head coach in 1993. In Thompson's seven seasons at Southern Miss (1992-98), the Golden Eagles won or shared two Conference USA titles, twice ranked among the top 25 nationally in scoring defense and made two bowl appearances. In one season at Memphis in 1999, his Tiger defense ranked 11th in the nation in scoring defense and 23rd in total defense. *Another candidate being considered is current cornerbacks coach Jason Washington
