Shelby Metcalf, the all-time winningest coach in Texas A&M and Southwest Conference men's basketball history, has died, according to the university. Metcalf passed away Thursday evening at the College Station Medical Center after battling a lengthy illness. Metcalf was 76 years old. His six SWC championships are No. 2 all-time behind SMU’s Doc Hayes who won eight. Metcalf’s Aggies won 20 or more games six times and appeared in five NCAA and four NIT championship tournaments. The Tulsa native was an All-American on East Texas State ’s national championship (NAIA) team in 1955. After Air Force duty in Germany , Metcalf began his coaching career at Class B Cayuga before moving to A&M as an assistant to Bob Rogers, his former coach at East Texas . Metcalf earned three college degrees including a doctorate at A&M. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.

Texas Aggie Basketball Recruiting...
lonestar replied to Aggie1212's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Aggie1212, The Aggies have signed three of the top 5 recruits in the Texas (per hoopscoop), including number one Jordan that you mentioned. Jordan is considered a top 10 player in the nation and will most likely be in Aggieland only a year until he goes to the NBA. Those that have signed a LOI are: Deandre Jordan HT: 7-0 WT: 240 Center Nathan Walkup HT: 6-7 WT: 185 Small Forward B.J. Holmes HT: 5-10 WT: 160 Point Guard Derrick Lewis HT: 6-5 WT: 200 Shooting Guard Also, The Ags recently signed a JUCO transfer for next year: Viktor Dubovitskiy HT: 6-7 WT: 210 Small Forward It will be interesting to see what Gillispie does now that the talent is starting to roll in. The lowest rated recruit for this class is a three star. For a little perspective, the highest rated recruit A&M has playing now is a three star. Hope that helps. Gig'em! -
The ACC is the traditional power, but is down this year. Reputation goes a long way in perception though.

I had actually heard that if the game was moved to Dallas it was going to be called something like the Silver Boot series (unsure exactly what I heard) and have a trophy. I would be for the trophy, but like you, I don't want the game moved. -

It started 3 or 4 years ago and is the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. There is one trophy and it is presented to the winner of every A&M-UT game/match/meet, etc. They do a point system, and the school with the most points over the year "gets" the trophy for the year. When a sport plays only once a year, the winner gets one point. In basketball, each game is worth half a point. In baseball, the winner of the series gets the point, etc. As for why they do it? It was State Farm and the ADs of the two schools idea and is about the $$$$$. -

[Hidden Content] COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Josh Carter scored 24 points and Acie Law added 21 points and 15 assists to lead No. 6 Texas A&M to a 100-82 victory over Texas on Monday night. The win was the Aggies' 21st straight at home, and it left them in sole possession of first place in the Big 12. Kevin Durant had 28 points for the Longhorns (16-7, 6-3 Big 12), but the Aggies finally found some scoring punch to go with one of the nation's stingiest defenses -- and that was too much for Texas and its super freshman. Texas A&M (20-3, 8-1) led 69-63 when Law hit the court hard and had to be helped to the locker room, biting his jersey in pain because of an ailing leg. The record crowd of 13,196 chanted "A-cie! A-cie!" as he left the court. With Joseph Jones already on the bench with four fouls, the Aggies were left to depend on inexperienced freshman Donald Sloan and Bryan Davis. But the pair came through. Sloan kept Durant in check and Davis added four points until Law returned about three minutes later. A 3-pointer by A.J. Abrams and two free throws by D.J. Augustin cut A&M's lead to 76-73, but the Longhorns got no closer. Sloan continued to impress even after Law returned, capping a 7-2 run with his basket that made it 83-75. Carter added a basket before a steal by Sloan and another basket by Carter made it 87-75, and the Longhorns never threatened again. Durant scored 12 points in the first six minutes of the second half, including seven straight that gave the Longhorns a 58-57 lead, their first of the game. A&M quickly got back on top on Carter's 3-pointer on the next possession, only to see it tied back up when Augustin hit a pair of free throws. Sloan hit a quick 3 and Antanas Kavaliauskas sandwiched two baskets around a free throw by Durant to push Texas A&M's lead to 67-61 with 11:24 remaining. The Aggies led by as many as 14 points in the first half, but Texas made 20 of 21 free throws to cut the deficit to 45-40 at halftime. -
Good! ;D I am still a little upset about the Hornets game this weekend.

A little off topic: I remember when I was young I used to like Vitale. Now, I can hardly stand to watch a game he is calling, especially one I am really into. Has he gotten more annoying over the years or do I just have a shorter patience in my old years (ha)? -

And, I think it goes without saying that Durant is an incredible talent and a lot of fun to watch. Whatever team gets the first round pick in the NBA is going to have great success in their future. -

The Aggies actually played the Longhorns style but still won. Its nice to see the Ags score in triple digits, but thats not the style they like to play. -
