I was the oldest surviving male of the family since my Dad and older brother had passed on so I was effectively ineligible for the draft and never served. Dad was a merchant marine in WWII. The MM was not considered a member of the armed forces back then. Now, I think they are. An uncle I never knew was MIA. Mom always thought he would just show up some day. Knowing her, she probably still hopes for that day. She is 95. I give thanks all the time for the servicemen who are serving and who have given their lives so that my family and I can live in the greatest country the world has ever seen.
