That’s true. And I’m in a little bit of a dilemma, too. I haven’t had a kid on the BC team in a couple of years and my last marching band member finished up year before last. I think I only watched BC get their teeth kicked in three times last year. I moved out of the district and find myself living in HJISD, with a Kountze address, and no particular team to follow this fall. Kountze is a no-go, I think the world of Coach Dubois, but HJ is in a tough, tough district and I haven’t heard much out of Hawk fans this off-season. That leaves me with Lumberton (who should be in the DC hunt AND running the Slot T) and Silsbee as potential bandwagons I could hop on. Silsbee being most likely to be playing Thanksgiving weekend. I’m worried that I just can’t get over how much I can’t stand the Tigers. Maybe we should start a recruiting period to see where I should take my talents this fall. Or at least do a poll, lol.

I guess I was more confused about eligibility in general and not really germane to this post. I thought you’d only have 2 years of eligibility at a juco... if somebody had started two years at any school, they wouldn’t have any remaining eligibility at the juco level. Am I mistaken? More on point, I was trying to think of anybody from SETX who’d gone on to success (a “name” qb) at a big, Power 5 type school. I’d thought of Dustin Long going to A&M, but his success was more at Sam. I can’t remember watching anybody from SETX under center during a premier Saturday game in my lifetime. Maybe Roschon changes that. Not knocking the kids who were mentioned at ETBU or whatever, I was just trying to think of anybody that would dispel the “SETX doesn’t develop QBs” assertion.

Isn’t Kilgore a junior college? I’m confused.

Yeah, me, too. The execution got worse, not better, as time marched on. The cards might be in a better place with the HC/OC installing a scheme that they're more familiar with. DeShazo was the DC and then OC (I might have that backwards) in consecutive years before he became the HC/AD. Kinda like when you guys had OCs and DCs swapping roles, lol. It didn't seem to lead to a lot of success. We were really fortunate in '15 when Dubois came that his son was a senior qb with years in that system. By 16 it was clicking even with a new qb. 17 was a really bad year due to injury, but should have been a rebuilding year, anyways. We had tons and tons of kids turn out that year, but after that debacle of a season we'd lost a lot of kids from the program. There were barely 2 dozen kids suited out for the later varsity games last season ('18), if my memory is correct. We played STJFL ball with Sophomore QB Oceguera (his dad was the coach) and we didn't have a ton of success way back then. Good athlete, it'll be interesting to see how much he's progressed and how well the squad adapts to the new scheme. The Slot T works well with semi-skilled athletes, but it seems like you just end up with too many spots for too few semi-skilled guys. You need three good RBs and a running qb.... It falls apart if you don't have real threats at one or two of those positions. It also hurts because you end up with a guy or two playing RB when you kinda sorta need them at linebacker or in your secondary. That smash-mouth kind of play tends to lead towards banged-up RBs, and when your FB is also the starting middle LB, you've REALLY got a problem if he goes down. If BC doesn't turn out more kids this season, I don't expect any better results.

It wasn't lost on me that we don't have a qb coach listed, lol.

I went back and checked... You are correct. I was just saying that this looks like one of those years where Newton plays those other non-district teams tough, but probably comes up short. It doesn't mean that you guys won't still be playing between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but just that "The Streak" will be ended early on this season in my opinion. That was a rough start that year for the eagles, lol.

"Buddha was not a Christian, but Jesus woulda made a good buddhist" Ray Wylie Hubbard I haven't watched the link yet, but I'd say "no." It's kinda hard to tell the flock that 10% of what they earn belongs to God (tithes) if you expect people to live in a society where they earn nothing.

I can't argue with this at all. I can't remember the last qb from SETX that went on to play QB at the D1 level.
-
Now there’s something.... lol.

I'm really starting to wonder if we should just consider it like voting on American Idol. Vote early, vote often.

I honestly think he had a decent season as a senior in Evadale if my memory is correct. Aggies could probably fill in the blanks for us.
-
Hmmmmm.... Ply and Lara at RB I like.... Really need a lot from our O-line to get things moving. We played STJFL with Oceguera (as qb way back then) and it'll be interesting to see how he's progressed. I'm really out of touch with the program these days.

I’m stealing that.
-
I've been wrong twice. That's why there are two ex-Mrs. Cardinalbackers out telling lies about me, lol.
-
I also found the old thread where Aggie was betting me that Kyle Mackey was gonna be the next HC.... Decided against reopening that convo.

Five dollars says that the big guy didn't have a dad around to tell him how out-of-bounds that is. Or he grew up watching his Dad treat his Mom that way. Either way, it all comes down to not having the right male role model in a young man's life, IMO.

S Got it. My apologies to BadSanta

I fixed it for you. Respect. Will somebody please remind me who it was that threw that out there? I still blame BadSanta.

It works awesome if you have good clock management and a decent defense. It also helps if your district opponents only see it when they play you. Between BC, Lum and possibly LiCk'eM running some form of it, there's not gonna be a lot of novelty in running it later in District play. The flip side is that your defense will suffer when facing a passing attack because the only time that they defend a decent passing attack is on Friday nights. Some of that can be made up with sheer athleticism in the secondary, but I don't think Lum has those kind of horses in the stable. We had a lot of success under Dubois with a decent group of kids using the slot T. We beat talented teams like Silsbee and Center and bigger schools like Huffman, LiCk'eM, etc... It's a great equalizer against bigger/more talented kids if utilized correctly. I think a slot T with a mixed in passing attack like Pleasant Grove ran against a much better WOS team in '17 could hurt a lot of feelings. I know we hurt our fair share without (sorry Tiger fans) a passing threat. If I'm not mistaken, Babin was a Slot T guy before he took the job in Lumberton. Getting the system installed and utilized correctly is another huge key. The other thing is that you MUST have disciplined fat kids if you want to succeed. You're not gonna be very successful with a 175 lb center, no offense.

It's fun to run the "T" when nobody else gets a good look at it. It's not very fun when you're having a "who runs the "T" better contest."
-
I see in the preview where Lumberton is switching to the Slot T, too.
-
"Fair" is where you go to kiss a pig. This is the real world, and everybody is keeping score.

The freshman team at BC in 16 went undefeated in district, if not the season.... I can’t remember. That group will be seniors this year. I have no such expectations for this fall.

Some battles aren’t even worth being won.
