Looking at it from our context, and 157 years later, what Lee and the Confederate Army did might seem like terrorist. But as Englebert pointed out on another thread, if you understand what was at stake (and I don't mean slavery), it should give any reasonable person a better understanding. At that time, the Federal Govt did little to interfere in what States did. States ran themselves, be it good bad or whatever. So you had the Feds all of a sudden telling these States what they could and couldn't do. Lee, who didn't own slaves, fought for his state of Virginia, who had joined the Confederacy, as did virtually every other soldier. Please realize I'm not trying to convert you to liking Gen Lee, just understand the reason why he reluctantly did what he felt he was obligated to do, fight for his State. For him, and many others, the words duty and honor, were words to live by.
