  1. Ponies improve to 6-0 with a Saturday sweep over Galveston JC 11-3 and 7-2. The team is really looking good for it being so early in the season. Solid pitching along with a very good defense and an offense that is hitting everything. However, I don't think they have really been tested yet. That test will come Tuesday though when the Ponies travel to Blinn to face the Bucs
  2. Leger, Bears seek playoff run Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Nestled under the pine trees at Don Gibbons Field at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School is a baseball team gearing up for 2009. A majority of those players were there last year and remember all too well how Lamar Consolidated bounced the Bears in two games. Senior catcher Stefan Leger is one of those players. “Last year was disappointing,†Leger said. “It was especially disappointing to lose in two games. All teams will always say they should have won but I truly feel we should have. We should have at least taken them to three.†The Bears went 24-10 a year ago and defeated the Huffman Falcons in three games in the bi-district round. Leger and the Bears are now ready to put 2008 to bed and make sure LC-M is prepared for what should be a successful 2009. “It is good to get started,†Leger added. “It was nice to practice with the guys and it has been real exciting. Last season feels like forever ago. We are ready and working on ways to get back to the playoffs. Getting to the playoffs is first on our minds. Then we want to keep winning.†Leger did not tell any personal goals for himself this year and is only saying, “Whatever happens will happen.†The Bears will be one of several good, if not great, teams in District 20-4A this season along with Port Neches-Groves, Vidor and Nederland. Vidor is coming off consecutive playoff trips while Port Neches-Groves was the district champion a year ago. “Our district is still highly competitive and now you add Livingston,†Leger said. “That is another team now we have to compete against. Vidor and PN-G are going to be two great teams so it is going to be fun to see how it all turns out. We are first going to try to make the playoffs and then worry about the district championship. Everyone wants that but the playoffs are the main thing. We are focused and ready to start competing.†If the Bears compete like most think they should, 2009 could be another banner year for Leger and LC-M.
  3. Hicks back in town - bad news for 21-3A Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Matt Hicks’ life has been crazy ever since the Bridge City Cardinals last stepped on the diamond as a team. There was Hurricane Ike, two moves and a lot of baseball practice in between. Since this is Hicks, the hurricanes and moving probably came between all the practicing in the now junior does. “I couldn’t wait to start doing something else,†Hicks said. “All I have done is practice, then drive to another practice and go home. That is my schedule. I put more hours of practice in this year than ever before. I stay here until dark and sometimes I don’t get home until 10 p.m. I don’t like to do anything else. I would just be at home watching TV so I would rather be here and getting something out of it.†Hicks’ first struggle came when Hurricane Ike struck Southeast Texas in mid-September. Just like many of his fellow teammates, Hicks’ family lost several homes. Hicks then moved to Louisiana and was all set to play for Barbe High School. Then came the announcement Hicks would be returning to Bridge City and would remain a Cardinal. “There was a lot of stress over there,†Hicks said. “It cost too much and moving back to Bridge City took a lot of that stress off of me. Now it is time for baseball and I don’t have to worry about both places.†As a team the Cardinals are shaping up to once again be the dominant figure in District 21-3A as the Jasper Bulldogs were moved out of the district during the last realignment. “We lost two great pitchers from last year in Jaden (Dillon) and Jason (Clark),†HIcks said. “I think Blake Snyder and (Anthony) Cessac will do a great job filling in those spots. Hitting I think we will be just as good as we have been in the past with guys like Blake Hubbard and Joe (Robertson). Those two guys are incredible along with Dustin Breaux. “We are going to go at it one game at a time. We at first have to prove we can even play and that is in the few scrimmages and we want to win a couple tournaments. Then we will start district and take it pitch by pitch and inning by inning.†Hicks knows 21-3A will not be a walk in the park. “I really think Hamshire-Fannett and Orangefield will both do well,†Hicks said. “The Longhorns are loaded this year and Jace (Statum) and Jacob (Felts) can make the Bobcats unstoppable. West Orange is going to also step up this year and Silsbee and Hardin-Jefferson are also out there.†The problem for all those teams is Hicks is also still a Cardinal.

  9. Beach, Wagner lead OF past WO-S, 83-53 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats had a point to prove Friday night and senior Olivia Wagner was in celebration mode. The Lady Bobcats, who barely got by West Orange Stark 48-39 on Jan. 13, defeated the Lady Mustangs a little more solidly Friday with a 83-53 victory. January 31 has always been a special day for Wagner, it is her birthday, and she celebrated her 18th birthday Friday with 32 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists. “It feels awesome to do that on my birthday,†Wagner said after the game. Wagner was far from alone Friday night as fellow senior Allie Beach had a huge game with 23 points and 13 rebounds while Jessica Weldon was as solid as ever with five rebounds and nine assists from her point guard position. The Orangefield (21-5, 6-1) win offset two nice games from the Lady Mustangs Demetrius Heard and Breann Cook. Heard led the Lady Mustangs (10-16, 1-6) with 21 points while Cook finished with 11 points. Michelle Simpson added 10 points in the loss. Yet the night belonged to the Lady Bobcats. Orangefield got 10 points from Beach in the first period as the Lady Bobcats headed into the second period up 22-13. Heard did her part in the first period with 11 points. The Lady Mustangs had a problem with fouls in the first period as Orangefield was in the bonus with 4:00 left before the start of the second period. Orangefield would be in the double-bonus by the end of the first. Orangefield was not done in the second yet this time it was Wagner who got hot. Wagner scored 13 points in the second period as the Lady Bobcats outscored the Lady Mustangs 24-13 to take a 46-26 advantage into the break. The Lady Bobcats slowed down in the third just not by much. Orangefield won the third period 16-14. Wagner had another 10 points in the frame while Heard and Cook each had five for the Lady Mustangs. The Lady Bobcats, up 62-40 heading into the fourth, then outscored the Lady Mustangs 22-13 in the game’s final eight minutes. “We have improved a lot since the start of the second half of district,†Wagner said. “I just hope we are able to keep it going. We wanted to come out to night and prove something and I think we did it.†Aimee Scales had seven points, five rebounds and four steals for Orangefield while Morgan Taylor finished with six points. Ashton Wagner added seven points and three boards while Kasidy Hayes put in seven points.

  12. [Hidden Content] Lady 'Cats power past Lady 'Cards, 83-26 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Orangefield Coach Chris Jost has been waiting for a night like Tuesday night. A night when the No. 12 Lady Bobcats put a complete game together and never stop for one second. Orangefield’s complete game was not good news for Bridge City who lost 83-26 at Bobcats’ Gym. For 31-minutes, 57-seconds every Lady Bobcat (20-5, 5-1) had scored except one. Ashton Wagner drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the crowd into an uproar. Ashton Wagner was busy all night though collecting five rebounds to go with two assists and two steals. Senior Allie Beach led all players with 17 points and also pulled in six rebounds while fellow senior Olivia Wagner added 16 points and six rebounds. Jessica Weldon had seven points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Bridge City’s (9-17, 1-5) Jordan Royal had a double-double for the second time in a row with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Mallory Guidry, whose hustle never stopped, finished with six points and six rebounds. Orangefield’s practice on free throws was also obvious to the crowd and Jost. “We have been shooting nothing but free throws in practice,†Jost said. “We have to have them to be a great team and win a championship.†Orangefield was 24-for-39 from the charity stripe. “When we shoot like that, we are a pretty good team,†Jost added. Orangefield’s defense was also tenacious Tuesday night, causing 27 turnovers. “Tonight we played our best four quarters of basketball,†Jost said. “In a lot of games we have played only good halves. We just got after it for all 32 minutes. I am proud of our team effort.†Sophomore Marissa Wyatt, who has recently missed time with an injury, poured in 14 points for the Lady Bobcats and also grabbed five rebounds while Aimee Scales had eight points and drug in nine boards. Kacy Juneau finished with six points, Kasidy Hayes had five boards, Morgan Taylor finished with six points and Carly Rucker had four points and five boards. “Those three seniors are so solid and Marissa had probably her best game of the year,†Jost said. “It was a great team effort. They never let up.†Allison Angelle finished with six rebounds for the Lady Cardinals while Whitney Knippers added five points. The Lady Bobcats were up 43-12 at the half and then outscored the Lady Cardinals 19-5 in the third. Royal had seven of her 10 points in the fourth for Bridge City. Wyatt had 12 of her 14 points for Orangefield in the second. The Lady Cardinals will play host to Hamshire-Fannett Friday while Orangefield will travel to face West Orange-Stark
