  6. Lady Cats not satisfied with just facing Lady Horns Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats are known for their work on the basketball court. Everyone in Southeast Texas knows this to be the truth. Well Southeast Texas meet the Lady Bobcats, a volleyball team one win away from this weekend's regional tournament in College Station. The Lady Bobcats will face the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Nederland High School in the Class 3A Region III area round. The winner will head to College Station for the regional tournament set for Friday and Saturday. This is a far cry for years past when the Lady Bobcats were lacing up sneakers and working on their free throws at this time of year. Orangefield basketball coach Chris Jost has even had to cancel the start of basketball season while the Lady Bobcats march through the volleyball playoffs. "We have always been known for basketball," volleyball coach Kristin Holbrooks said. "I think in a lot of people's eyes what we do from here on out is just icing on the cake but we are not satisfied as a team and I am not satisfied as a coach. The girls are not ready to lose. They see how good they can be in other sports and it will carry over to basketball which can carry over to softball. It is great for our athletic program." The Lady Bobcats have not had an easy go to get to this point either. Orangefield fought through District 21-3A and ended the district race in a third-place tie with the Bridge City Lady Cardinals, a team known for playoff runs in volleyball and a 2007 season which ended at the regional tournament. Orangefield showed they were not satisfied then with a three-game sweep in a play-in game and then set their claws on the bi-district round. Once again still hungry for more, the Lady Bobcats took out the Lady Panthers of Liberty in four games. Holbrooks knows the Lady Bobcats will need the same focus and desire to down the Lady Longhorns who finished in a tie for the district championship with the Silsbee Lady Tigers. Hamshire-Fannett swept Silsbee in a match to determine seeding through the playoffs and then knocked off Taylor in four games. In the last district meeting between the Lady Longhorns and Lady Bobcats, Hamshire-Fannett won in five games. "Hamshire-Fannett is playing real good volleyball right now," Holbrooks said. "They are a great team. I have always said I want our team to play teams when they are playing their best. Liberty I feel was at their best last week and I expect the same on Tuesday. Hamshire is not looking to go home after Tuesday." Holbrooks said the team has no problem in facing a team they know so well from district matches. "At first when we played Bridge City in the play-in match, I was nervous out of my mind," Holbrooks added. "The kids say they would rather face someone they know and where they hit and where they line up on defense. As far as their peace of mind goes, I rather us playing Hamshire-Fannett over Taylor." And face the Lady Longhorns the Lady Bobcats will do Tuesday and try to make sure Jost keeps having to make those changes on the basketball schedule.
  7. Hopefully in Bryan waching the OF volleyball team in the regional tournament. If not then Lumberton game Friday night and then WB and WOS games Saturday

  10. Does anyone have a good closeup picture of the North Forest and Kingwood Park helmets? Looking for some pics to send the helmet project website. Thanks
  11. That's what I originally thought and then someone else told me otherwise. That makes sense as to give everyone an equal number of district games. So the district standings are this.... Evadale (6-2) (6-0) Hull-Daisetta (7-2) (4-1) West Hardin (4-3) (3-2) High Island (4-3) (3-2) Chester (3-5) (1-4) Colmesneil (2-6) (1-4) Burkeville (0-7) (0-5) Sabine Pass (1-5) (0-0) So High Island can still get in. Thanks for the clarification
  12. You may be correct...but IF HI won, wouldn't that put HD, HI and WH all at 4-2? Wouldn't it come down to points spread and who beat who head-to-head? I will tell you I haven't studied the scenario at all. Of course, if HD takes of business, it's Evadale-HD-WH... Here are the current district standings for those 3 teams Hull-Daisetta (5-1) West Hardin (4-2) High Island (3-2) HD is at HI Burkeville is at WH IF HI was to beat HD that would put them at HD (5-2) HI (4-2) I dont see WH losing to winless Burkeville so they would finish 5-2, tied with HD for 2nd but HD would get the head to head over them and go 2nd. That missed game HI had with Sabine Pass may end up hurting them because they haven't played as many games as WH so they can't catch them in the standings. Now if somehow HI beat HD and Burkeville beat WH they would finish like this WH (4-3) HI (4-2) You would think in that case HI would go because they have 1 less loss than WH but WH could then throw out the argument that HI didn't have to play as many games as they did. Not sure what the decision would be in that case?
  13. West Hardin is 4-2 in district and High Island is 3-2. I don't think there is any way High Island can get in. Even if they were to beat H-D West Hardin would have to lose to winless Burkeville.
  14. That doesn't seem entirely fair to all the other teams that had to WIN to get there, but hey, the UIL doesn't always make the most sense. It does seem like a catch 22. On one hand, you win bidistrict and are automatically in the regional quarters, but at the same time, you have a week in between games and the team you are playing has some momentum. Good luck to all involved. Each region is like that with 1 district missing. Just depends on your seeding

  18. Speaking for myself, and I believe most other OF fans, I don't have any harsh feelings towards WO-S because of the game. It was the best team in the district against the worst team (record wise) in the district. WO-S could have scored 90 if they had really wanted to. They did put in some second string players in the 4th quarter and did wait until the play clock ran down to snap the ball to get the game over with. They are really clicking on all cylinders right now and I wish them the best of luck in the playoffs.
