  1. I thought Mt. Carmel closed this past summer? That's why I left them off the schedule
  2. Cats, Horns to meet for 26th time Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — If the Orangefield Bobcats are taking this season game-by-game, Friday will be the biggest game to date. Coach Blake Morrison is calling the District 21-3A schedule “The Second Season†and it all starts with a road trip to Hamshire-Fannett to take on the Longhorns. The Bobcats (1-2) and Longhorns (2-2) have met 25 times in the series history with Hamshire-Fannett leading it 15-10. The first meeting between the two schools was in 1968, a 26-7 Longhorns’ victory. Orangefield picked up a 17-14 victory last season. “This is like the start of the second season after Hurricanes Ike and Gustav,†Morrison said. “Tarkington last week felt like it was our first game of the season. We were rusty and it was a big win.†The Bobcats got a huge came from their special teams unit last week in a 17-7 victory over the Tarkington Longhorns. Derrick Evans booted a 34-yard field goal and the Bobcats also had a block on special teams. “I thought our special teams played a big part in the win,†Morrison said. “Those guys helped with field position, coverage on punts, blocked a kick and had a field goal. It was tremendous and we won that phase of the game.†The Bobcats seem to be catching H-F at a bad time as the Longhorns are getting a few players back from injury. Morrison said the Bobcats are preparing like every Longhorn will be back in uniform, including running back Hagan Daigle. “They are huge and physical,†Morrison added. “Defensively they do a great job of keeping the opposing offense off the field.†Bobcat fans can expect Orangefield to stick to the running game as the team has rushed the ball 111 times compared to just 40 passes. Senior Zach Peevey leads the team with 243 yards on 56 carries with a touchdown. Junior quarterback Jace Statum has 85 yards on the ground while Steven Stone has three rushing touchdowns on 18 carries with 82 yards. Statum has thrown for 102 yards this year with Evans hauling in five receptions for 49 yards. Orangefield is averaging 182.3 yards and 13.6 points a game. The Bobcats defense is giving up 310.7 yards and 17.6 points a contest so far in 2008. “Our main priority is execution,†Morrison said. We have to execute a lot better than we did a week ago. “This is a big game. We have five district games to go so we have to come out of the blocks. Everyone knows both teams will fight hard. Then you look at our district and it doesn’t get any easier. Silsbee is the best 1-3 team in the state. Bridge City, those guys are playing with a lot of emotions and are winning games. Hardin-Jefferson put up some points against Newton and had a huge comeback against Anahuac. Of course West Orange is still West Orange. There is not an easy week the rest of the way and it all starts this Friday. We are going to go out there and see how it comes out of the wash.â€

  8. 'Stangs roll over Falcons, 33-7 Dan Perrine The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Four weeks of sitting in the wings since their last game had the West Orange-Stark Mustangs a bit out-of-sinc. Friday night the Mustangs got back in the saddle again as they defeated the Brookshire Royal Falcons 33-7 at Dan R. Hooks Stadium. West Orange-Stark (3-0) appeared out of rhythm in their execution in the first quarter. The Mustangs gained only four first downs their first two possessions and were kept out of the end zone. “Tonight for about a quarter and three-fourths, we weren’t very sharp early.†Coach Dan Hooks lamented. Brookshire Royal (2-3) actually took the first lead of the game on a miscue by the Mustangs. The Falcons’ Shane Alexander picked up a fumble after a short pass completion by West Orange-Stark and raced 48 yards for the score. Daniel Garcia kicked the point-after to make the score 7-0 with 1:55 to play in the first quarter. West Orange-Stark started to find their game and hardly missed a beat the next possession. Ten plays covered 54 yards and evened the score. Quintavious Garrett took the ball five times for 12 yards. His last carry was good for 9 yards and 6 points. The touchdown was proceeded by a 41-yard bomb to Trey Franks from Ortavious Hypolite. Justin Sparrow knotted the score at 7 with 10:16 until halftime. The second quarter would see the Mustangs reel off 26 unanswered points. All except the first touchdown would be setup by fumble recoveries by the West Orange-Stark defense. After a Mustang punt by Franks pinned Brookshire at its own 11, the Falcons fumbled on the first play and West Orange-Stark’s Terry Rubin recovered at the 7. Hypolite sprinted in on the next play and Sparrow’s kick gave the Mustangs a 14-7 lead. Following the kickoff the Falcons fumbled again on the first play from scrimmage, and Adrian Steen recovered for the Mustangs. Once again it took one play, a 33-yard rainbow between the duet of Hypolite and Franks for the score. The kick failed and WO-S led 20-7 with 2:59 to go to the half. The next Brookshire Royal possession was the same song, third verse. On the third play the Falcons fumbled, and Rubin recovered again for the Mustangs at the Brookshire 23. West Orange-Stark got a first down on a roughing the passer penalty on a play which Hypolite barely missed Garrett for an easy score. Hypolite scored three plays later on an 8-yard bootleg aided by two great blocks from Garrett, the first to help Hypolite avoid being hit for a loss and the second to get him into the end zone. The try for two failed and the Mustangs led at the half 26-7. Their defense held the Falcons to 1 first down in the first half. The Mustangs continued on a roll at the start of the third quarter. WO-S scored on their fourth straight possession following a Falcon turnover. Franks intercepted a pass at the Mustangs’ 3. West Orange-Stark drove 97 yards in 9 plays. Hypolite passed to Mark Roberts for a key first down early in the drive. Hypolite then picked up another first down to overcome a 15-yard penalty two plays earlier against the Mustangs. The next play was a sensational solo effort by Garrett, who swept right end and turned on the after-burners to speed past two or three would by Falcon tacklers on his way to a 45-yard touchdown. Garrett finished the night with 107 yards on 25 carries. Sparrow nailed the final point on the scoreboard with 3:50 to play in the third. The victory served as a final tuneup before the real show starts next week for the Mustangs with district opponent the Silsbee Tigers coming to town. “Its a game, and we needed to play one. We put 33 up there, so we going to really have to get ready because Silsbee will come here in a bad mood,†Hooks said. Silsbee lost to Jasper in its pre-district warmup game.
  9. Cards get emotional 28-16 win over Red Devils Jim Walden The Orange Leader HUNTINGTON — Hundreds of high school football games are played every year in Texas. But still, this was a huge deal. Their thoughts had to be miles away. After all, Hurricane Ike delivered a devastating blow to their hometown three weeks ago. However, on Friday night and even though some of their teammates are still unavailable because they can not return to their homes, the Bridge City Cardinals played a football game for the first time since Sept. 5 And, it was an exciting night for the Cardinals. Bridge City posted a 28-16 victory over the Huntington Red Devils in a non-district game. “This is a big win for us,†said Bridge City coach Cris Stump. “It meant a lot to us. Some of the guys had tears in their eyes when they were playing the national anthem.†In a drive that started in the third quarter and ended in the fourth, Bridge City moved 81-yards for a TD. Joe Robertson pushed it in the end zone from the 4. Devin Bertrand made his first of four extra points. The Red Devils only points of the second half came on a safety. After a scoreless first quarter, things heated up in the second. Bridge City scored first on a 5-yard run by quarterback Josh Lemoine, who passed for 274 Yards, with 7:01 to go in half. Lemoine hit two long passes of 33 and 26 yards on the drive. The Cardinals had an earlier chance to score but missed connected on a field-goal attempt. Huntington took the lead with 4:30 to play in the half. Michael Martinez scored on an 18-yard run then quarterback Taylor Rosson ran for two to give the Red Devils a brief lead. The Cardinals put up two more touchdown before the half. Lemoine’s 1-yard run capped a 69-yard drive with 2:05 on the clock. A 67-yard pass to Jerry Landry and a 23-yard run by Joe Robertson put the Cardinals within reach of the end zone. After stopping the Red Devils with 25 ticks in the half, the Cardinals scored again. Lemoine zipped a 32-yard TD pass to Cory Moseley. Matt Menard had two key runs of 18 and 13 yards to set up Lemoine. The win was big for Bridge City. But, playing again was even bigger. “It feels great,†Lemoine said. “It feels great to be back on the field and win too.†Bridge City returns to action Friday to start District 21-3A in Sour Lake against the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks. The Hawks lost 46-28 to the Newton Eagles.
  10. Bobcats secure first win; down Longhorns, 17-7 Marty Elkins The Orange Leader TARKINGTON — Turning up the defensive heat, the Orangefield Bobcats turned back Tarkington in the Longhorns’ own backyard, strolling to their first win of the 2008 campaign with a 17-7 non-district victory. Tarkington (2-2) led 7-3 in the middle of the fourth period before the Bobcats (1-2) rallied back with 14 unanswered points. The Bobcats came back with a blocked punt and the ball rolled to the Tarkington 7. Running back Steven Stone, who had 49 yards on eight carries, put the Bobcats up to stay with a 7-yard sprint into the end zone. After the kickoff, Orangefield’s Kyle Fontenot picked off a Longhorn pass and returned it for a score as the Bobcats captured a 17-7 advantage. The Bobcats went up 3-0 in the second quarter by a smooth 34-yard field goal by Derrick Evans. Tarkinton running back Mike Canary put Tarkington up early in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard touchdown gallop as the Longhorns went 80 yards in 12 plays. Even after that, the Bobcats denied the Longhorns again when Evans picked off a Longhorn pass. The Bobcats finished with 149 yards on 34 rushes. Leading the way was Zach Peevey, who had 51 yards on 18 totes. Bobcat quarterback Jace Statum zipped for 44 yards on seven carries and was 1-for-9 passing for six yards. Tarkington had 252 yards of total offense with 168 coming on the ground and 84 in the air. Tarkington also lost one of four fumbles while the Bobcats didn’t cough up the ball once. The Bobcats will crank up District 21-3A play next week when they visit Hamshire-Fannett.
