  3. Mustangs await "Royal" test Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — The West Orange-Stark Mustangs are rolling. You would certainly think that, after all because the Mustangs have vaulted from No. 7 to No. 3 in the Class 3A state poll in three weeks. Not bad at all, considering the Mustangs have not played in three weeks due to Hurricane Ike. “Isn’t that the weirdest thing you’ve ever heard up,†said long-time Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “People have been dropping games that were in front of us, many of them surprises. The kids are loving it.†The Mustangs (2-0) return to action Friday night in their final non-district tuneup when they play host to the Brookshire-Royal Falcons (2-2). “We’ve had a chance to see Brookshire live twice and they’re pretty darn good,†said Hooks. “Their two losses came at the hands of Sealy and Bellville, two very outstanding programs. They beat Bryan-Rudder and Hempstead.†Hooks likes what the Falcons have on both sides of the ball. “Their quarterback is what makes them go,†said Hooks. “They don’t like to run much. They spread you out and like to throw the ball. The quarterback is capable of breaking some big runs. Defensively, they like to apply a lot of pressure and come at you with blitz packages, much like what Newton likes to do. It’ll be a good challenge for our kids.†The Mustangs will open up defense of their District 21-3A crown Oct. 10 when they play host to the Silsbee Tigers. The Mustangs have won four straight district titles and also have a 24-game district winning streak. The Mustang players have been performing well in practice, even after all of the Ike trauma. “The kids are hungry to go out there and play a game,†said Hooks. “It’s been so long. Three weeks, it almost seems like a year ago. We’ve got eight kids that are no longer in their homes but they’re out there battling. After about three days of practice, the kids starting looking real good again. Conditioning was tough early but heck, our defense is hitting harder and flying to the ball quicker then before the storm.†The Mustangs were a “storm†in their first two games of the season whipping up on Class 4A programs Nederland (33-13) and Little Cypress-Mauriceville (48-7). The Mustang defensive unit, led by the likes of Kevin Robinson (21 tackles) and Josh Lynch (17 tackles) are allowing just a mere 155 yards a contest. Meanwhile, the offense has piled up big numbers, pumping out 420 yards per contest. Senior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite has completed 13-of-21 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 162 yards and two TDs on 18 carries. Senior tailback Quintavious Garrett has dashed for 356 yards and five TDs on just 35 totes. Trey Franks (five catches, 121 yards, 1 TD) and Josh Gloston (five catches, 106 yards, 1 TD) lead a sound group of receivers. “Hopefully the kids will dig down deep and find that great momentum we had before the storm Hooks said. “I know one thing, they’re ready to play some football. Friday night can’t get here fast enough.â€
  4. Bobcats ready to face Tarkington Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — It’s been back to business for the Orangefield Bobcats the last week. The Bobcats (0-2) remain hungry in trying to garner their first win of the season after Hurricane Ike has made them wait for three weeks. Orangefield will get their last tuneup tonight when they hit the road to face the Tarkington Longhorns (2-1) with District 21-3A action just a week away. “The kids are ready to play some football,†said Bobcat head coach Blake Morrison. “Looking back on things, our kids went to school a total of seven days in September. They’re so ready for things to get back to normal.†The Bobcats stayed quite busy during the aftermath of Ike. Many football players went to the aid of a devastated neighboring Bridge City, helping out friends and family clean up. Still, that’s not completely staying in football shape. “Conditioning was definitely a concern during those early practices,†Morrison said. “You could tell some of them were going through some pain but they were happy at the same time because they were playing some football. We really ran them through the mill.†The Bobcats fell to East Chambers in their season opener and then lost a nail-biting overtime game to Buna while Tarkington has captured two of its first three tilts. Morrison feels the Longhorns are definitely a formidible opponent. “We were able to trade some film and after watching them, they (Tarkington) have a very sound football team,†said Morrison. “They love to run the football. They run the same style offense as both Buna and Vidor, who both gave us a good look early on.†The Bobcats have allowed 596 yards rushing after two games. “The key for us is making those early tackles at the line and not letting them bounce in the secondary,†Morrison said. “We would love to create some turnovers. On offense, the effort has been there from the get-go, we just need to execute better and don’t give up the easy turnovers.†Running back Zach Peevey leads the Bobcat offense, rushing the ball 38 times for 192 yards. Quarterback Jace Statum has passed for 96 yards and receiver Derrick Evans has caught four passes for 43 yards. ‘The kids are thrilled about having a chance to line up against somebody else again,†Morrison said. “We’re going to play as many kids because of the possible fatigue factor. It’s great that would could get this game going. We needed that last non-district game to have a chance to look at things and see areas that we can improve in before district. It’s a big plus. The Bobcats open District 21-3A play on the road at Hamshire-Fannett Oct. 10.

  6. GoStangs wrote this article for the penny record 10 years ago on the OF playoff loss to Crockett in the area round...... Orangefield’s Dream Season Comes to an End Gashed with honourable scars, Low in Glory's lap they lie; Though they fell, they fell like stars, Streaming splendour through the sky. The Battle of Alexandria - James Montgomery When the season began just three months ago, most of the “experts,†in high school football did not even pick the Orangefield Bobcats to finish in the top three of their district, let alone to win a playoff game. Dave Campbell’s football magazine, recognized as the state’s elite predictor of successful teams to be, picked the Bobcats to place fifth in a district of six. Three months ago, if someone would say the only Orange County team to be in the second round of the playoff season was Orangefield, not West Orange-Stark or Little Cypress-Mauriceville, that person would have been pushed aside with a chuckle, a wink, and a nod. But what a difference three months makes in high school football. Building on the successes of last year’s 5-5 squad that finished third in district, the Bobcats improved and made the playoffs for the first time in a decade. It was a season of dreams, and the underdog ‘Cats battled into the second round of the playoffs with the hopes of the community with them to bring home another post-season victory. Going into the second round of the state championship playoffs, the Bobcats were riding on a wave of emotion after a thrilling win over Hamshire-Fannett in the bi-district round of the postseason. Entering the second round of the playoffs, the area round, Orangefield was facing another uphill battle, but one could not help but pull for the Cinderella Cats. Facing the Crockett Bulldogs, a team returning from last year’s 12-1 regional semi-final year, the odds were definitely against the ‘Cats, but Orangefield never showed signs of intimidation. This Bobcat team believed they could win and played until the final whistle sounded, ending the game 41-31, and ending the dream season with plenty to be proud of and an 8-4 record. Head Coach Randy Theriot upset with the loss, explained he was “fulfilled,†with the success of the season. “I felt like we deserved to be here. We gave a great effort and we played for 48 minutes. This will be a team to remember. They were all over-achievers. Their picture will go on a wall for us to remember them.†Once again, senior running back Beaux Daville had an outstanding effort. On this night, Daville would carry the ball 27 times for 206 yards and three touchdowns, and in the effort he became the first Bobcat ever to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season. Daville, who finished last year with 503 yards rushing, ended this year with 2015 yards on 272 carries (7.4 yards per carry for the season) and 25 touchdowns. Although Daville had a great year, this was a total team effort, as the team motto, “One Heartbeat,†would show throughout the season and into the playoffs. Coach Theriot and his staff called some gutsy plays, including the first play from scrimmage (a halfback option), and the ‘Cats showed they were ready, not only to play, but to win. The Bobcats team effort was what got them this far and it was their team effort for which this night will be remembered. Orangefield had some costly mistakes but they were in the game until time ran out on them, and if played again, it could easily go the Bobcats’ way. Coach Theriot, commenting on the season, said, “I couldn’t be more pleased. We came out early in the season and set goals and we achieved them. I’m very proud of our team. This was a total team effort.†It was a great season for the Bobcats and one that the entire Orange County Community should be proud of, as well. They had a great season and fought hard each and every game. It was a great ride and fun while it lasted, but the Orangefield fans better get used to the team being in the postseason. The Cats will be back.

  18. LaGrange was in the state title game in 2001 I think it was (may have won it that year). They beat Orangefield in the 2003 area round behind the leadership of current EC head coach Tony Valastro. I think they have been down the last couple of years though. May be a good game with HF
