[Hidden Content] Bears get offensive against Panthers, 16-6 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — The best cure Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears Coach Steve Griffith could think of to get over Friday’s loss to Port Neches-Groves was for his team to get back on the field in a hurry. Due to possible heavy rain today, the Bears and the Ozen Panthers played Monday and LC-M took its frustrations out on the Panthers. The Bears crushed out 17 hits against the Panthers (1-2) in a 16-6 pounding that lasted only five innings. It was a different scene considering LC-M (14-3, 2-1) was held to four hits Friday in a 5-1 loss to the Indians. PN-G (3-0) downed Nederland (1-2) 7-6 Monday while Vidor also stayed at 3-0 in District 22-4A play with 9-2 win over Vidor. “I told the guys three things were in our advantage of playing a day early,†Griffith said. “First we didn’t take a chance of stacking games up later in the week. Second was we got to get back on the field and not keep pondering the loss. The third was we have a pretty good record when the wind is blowing out at Don Gibbens Field.†Matt Johnson led the hit parade by going 3-for-4 with three runs, a homer and four RBI while Stefan Cloeren scored three times and added a RBI. Jon Gunn finished 2-for-3 with a RBI, a run and two doubles and Tim Barry was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Stefan Leger also homered and and two runs and two RBI. Ben Jones got the win on the hill giving up one run on two hits with two walks and three strike outs. Johnson, Barry and Shane Waddell each worked an inning of relief. “Winning tonight lets you start to forget about the game we didn’t play well in Port Neches,†Griffith said. “Then if we win on Thursday, we will do a little better to erase that memory. I would have taken being 14-3 and 2-1 at this point if someone would have asked me at the beginning of the season. It is certainly something we are not embarrassed about.†The Bears got going early with six runs in the bottom of the first on six hits and one Ozen error. Chad Richard had a RBI single while Cloeren ripped a two-run single to center. Johnson then blasted a two-RBI double to right. Johnson scored on a wild pitch and Jones would score when Barry laced a RBI single to left to give LC-M a 6-0 lead. LC-M put up six more runs in the bottom of the second as Leger hit a two-run home run to left field. Two batters later it was Johnson with a two-run bomb to left-center field to make it 10-1. Dallas Brown later scored on a RBI double to left by Barry who also scored when Gunn hit a double to center. The Bears scored their last four runs in the bottom of the third. Josh Garza had a two-RBI double to center that scored Cloeren and Johnson to make it 14-1. Phillip Richard, running for Brown, scored on a RBI single by Barry. Garza scored when Brandon Landry hit a single to center. The Panthers put up five runs in the top of the fourth as Gavin Jones scored on a RBI single by Chris Raggett. Josh Gardiner later came up with the big hit with a grand slam to center. The Bears sent 36 batters to the plate in the four innings they batted and LC-M batted around in the first and second innings. LC-M sent nine batters up in the third and just five in the fourth. LC-M returns to action Thursday when it plays host to Dayton -
