  2. [Hidden Content] Bears rattle Mustangs in baseball opener Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Using superb pitching and taking advantage of a slew of West Orange-Stark errors, the defending District 22-4A champion Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears got their season off in dominating fashion by downing the Mustangs 11-1 in five innings Monday night. Bear pitchers Tim Barry, Shane Waddell and Danny Briseno teamed up to scatter just two hits while striking out nine to silence the Mustangs. The Bears managed six hits off Mustang pitchers Bubba Gearhart and Cody Hodge. The duo walked five Bears and their defense struggled behind them as the Mustangs committed five errors. Stefan Cloeren and Stefan Leger both went 2-for-3 to power the LC-M offensive attack. Tim Barry and Ben Jones also added singles for the Bears. Taylor Bonin had a single for the Mustangs in the second inning and Hodge singled in the third frame. The Bears scratched for a run in the bottom of the second. Barry led off with a single to left, went to second on a nice Jon Gunn sacrifice bunt. He went to third on a past ball and scored after Chad Richard hit a sharp fly ball that was dropped in left-centerfield by the Mustangs. LC-M went up 6-0 in the second by tallying five runs. After the Mustangs turned a nice double play, Gearhart walked Dallas Brown, Wade Estes and Barry and then walked Gunn with the bases-loaded as Brown trotted in to make it 2-0. Hodge replaced Gearhart on the mound and Cloeren came to the plate and ripped a two-run single to rightfield to make it 4-0. Richard then hit another deep fly ball to rightfield which was dropped by the Mustangs and two more Bears scooted in to make it 6-0. The Mustangs grabbed their run in the top of the third. With two outs, Mustang Seth Thomas got all the way to second base after he slapped a grounder to third which was misfired to first base by the Bears. Kendall Veitch reached first on a third-strike passed ball and then Hodge was able to score Thomas by lacing an RBI single to left. LC-M finished off the game with five more runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Waddell led off by getting hit by a Hodge pitch and Barry reached first on an error. Courtesy runner Briseno went to third on the error and came home on a wild pitch to make it 7-1. After Gunn walked, Cloeren singled to load the bases up again. Barry and Gunn both evenbtually scored when another Richard deep fly was dropped in right again, making it 9-1. Leger would score Cloeren with an RBI single to left and a single to center by Jones brought in Richard for the game’s final run. Barry struck out five Mustangs in three innings of work. Waddell fanned two in 1 2/3 innings and Briseno finished it off with two consectutive strikeouts. The Bears return to action Thursday through Saturday when they host their own tournament. The Mustangs return to play Feb. 26 when they visit Crosby, which is coached by former Mustang standout Marcus Thompson.
  3. [Hidden Content] Lady Bobcats hope to trap Navasota Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader HUMBLE — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats breezed through the area round last week. It is hard to imagine it will be that easy again at 7 p.m. at Atascocita High School tonight as the Lady Bobcats face the Navasota Lady Rattlers in the Class 3A Region III Regional Quarterfinals. A win tonight would clinch Orangefield's third consecutive trip to the regional tournament held at Sam Houston University in Huntsville this weekend. Navasota is fresh off a 71-53 victory over Silsbee Friday night even with the Lady Tigers' Ang Green scoring 30 points. Orangefield brushed off LaGrange 65-39 Friday night with senior Kaylin Little busting out for 36 points. Now Orangefield Coach Chris Jost and the Lady Bobcats will use the experience of going 13-1 in District 21-3A as a guide on how to take now the state's No. 5 ranked team. "Navasota has not lost since a Christmas tournament," Jost said. "So we are probably going to be the best team they have seen since then. The 21-3A race being so tough has prepared us for this kind of game. The girls are certainly ready for the challenge." The Lady Bobcats only lost once in 21-3A and it was the last game of the district schedule at Hardin-Jefferson when Orangefield had already wrapped up its first out-right district championship since 1992. "If we continue to play the way we have played over the last six weeks, we will be in good shape," Jost said. "If we execute our offense and hit the boards with them, we will be in business." Orangefield stormed out of the gates against LaGrange Friday with an 18-7 lead after the first period and then led 38-14 at the break. Little was on fire in the first half with 24 points in the game's first 16 minutes. Allie Beach had eight points and eight rebounds while Laura Riddick had six points and eight rebounds. "It was good to come out and play well early," Jost said. "A few girls got some playoff experience and that was big for us." Jost said Navasota poses a new threat as the Lady Rattlers are both a "big and fast" team who rebounds well and gets down the court in a hurry. "They like to push the ball up the floor," Jost added. "Navasota likes to get the rebound and go. We have got to be on the boards. On defense they mainly play half-court, man-to-man and they are really good at it. If we can stay aggressive and run our offense, we will be in good shape."
  4. [Hidden Content] Bobcats take on explosive Coldspring Van Wade The Orange Leader WOODVILLE — Rolling into the playoffs on a high. That certainly describes Coach Rea Wrinkle’s Orangefield Bobcats. The Bobcats had to take the Jasper Bulldogs down twice last week just to join the postseason party. Well, mission accomplished as Orangefield edged past the Bulldogs 62-60 last Tuesday and then buried them 67-52 on Friday to earn the third-place playoff spot out of District 21-3A. Tonight, the Bobcats (22-9) will face a stern test in District 22-4A runnerup Coldspring at 6:30 p.m. at Woodville High School in the Class 3A Region III bidistrict playoffs. The Bobcats have played well under pressure of late, led by the likes of seniors Jared Helton, Jeremy Granger, junior Tyler Angelle and sophomores Zach Hayes and Derrick Evans. “The kids have responded well all season in some tight situations,†said Wrinkle. “They’ve played so well together and I’m extremely proud of them. They’re so excited about making the playoffs but they don’t want to just settle with that.†Wrinkle likes the mindset of the Bobcat squad. “They’re really playing excellent basketball,†Wrinkle said. “The win over Jasper last Friday was the best game they’ve put together all season. They executed so well and we only had about seven turnovers, against a good pressing team.†The Bobcats will face more defensive heat tonight against the Coldspring Trojans. “Coldspring has tremendous athletes and they love to full-court pressure you and man you up,†said Wrinkle. “They remind me a lot of the way Silsbee likes to do things.†Coldspring, which advanced all the way to the 3A Region III Finals in 2006 in which it fell to West Orange-Stark, has a solid all-around team and are led by the likes of 6-4, 215-pound post James Scott and flashy point guard Chad Allen. “The Scott kid is a buly player that likes to have his way with people inside,†said Wrinkle. “He’s got excellent jumping ability and he crashes the boards. We’ve got to be able to limit them to one shot on their end, so we’re going to have to block out well. The Allen kid makes everything go for them. He averages about 13 points a game but he also dishes out seven or eight assists a game.†Wrinkle feels the game will be all about tempo. “We’ve got to maintain our philosophy and that’s dictating the tempo and slowing the game down to our liking and not turn the ball over, which we’ve done well of late,†Wrinkle said. “Coldspring likes to push the ball up and down the floor. The big key for us is getting back on defense and not allowing those easy buckets.†The winner of the Orangefield-Coldspring game will face Navasota in the area round later this week. In other Southeast Texas playoff action tonight, SIlsbee will face Kingwood Park at 7 p.m. at Barbers Hill High School in 3A bidistrict action. In 4A action, Beaumont Central will take on Barbers Hill at Lee College at 8 p.m. and Dayton will meet Crosby at 8 p.m at Barbers Hill High School. In Class 5A, Beaumont West Brook will battle Deer Park at 6 p.m. at Barbers Hill. In Class 2A, East Chambers will take on Corrigan-Camden at 7 p.m. at Splendora High School and Hardin will meet Woden at 7 p.m. at Livingston High School.
