[b]Vidor can clinch spot with win over Bulldogs Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader NEDERLAND —[/b] The Nederland Bulldogs are on their fourth quarterback so far in 2009. Kirby Bellow went into the season for Nederland as the starter yet was hurt after 17 pass attempts in the season opener against West Orange-Stark. So Vidor should have nothing to worry about since a total of six different players have thrown passes for Nederland this season, right? Vidor coach Jeff Mathews knows better as the Pirates (6-2, 3-2) head into Nederland (3-5, 2-3) with a chance to lock up a playoff spot in District 20-4A. Nederland leads the all-time series 47-9-1. Vidor last beat Nederland in 2006, 28-24. Dionte Forney is the latest Bulldog to take snaps under center and he did quite well. Forney has thrown for 333 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Mathews credits Nederland coach Larry Neumann and his staff for the success the Bulldogs have had after Bellow’s injury. “I said even after the Bellow injury Nederland would still be in the thick of things and here they are,” Mathews said. “Coach Neumann and his staff are one of the best in the area for a reason. They find ways to win and their kids believe in them.” The Pirates can clinch a playoff spot tonight with a win against Nederland so Mathews has had no problem getting his troops focused. It was almost the exact same scenario last year when Nederland went to Vidor except the roles were reversed. Nederland clinched a playoff spot with a 35-23 win over the Pirates. The loss knocked Vidor out of the playoff race. “It is going to be an exciting game,” Mathews said. “It is a must win for those guys and we can clinch with a win. It is going to have a playoff atmosphere. We don’t have a natural rival here in Vidor. LC-M has West Orange-Stark. PN-G has Nederland and Central has Beaumont Ozen. Our kids for some reason get up to play Nederland.” Vidor is coming off a 49-15 win over LC-M. The Pirates rushed for 450 yards against the Bears with Shayne Pitman leading the way with 246 yards and two touchdowns. Pitman continues to be the leading rusher for the Pirates with 1,157 yards and 12 touchdowns while Kevin Tate has 683 yards and 11 trips to the endzone. Mathews is hoping for the same kind of output, especially if the rains come Friday night like expected. “Right now we are as healthy as we have been all year except for (Jacob) Peevey,” Mathews said. “We did a great job moving the football last week and we kept the LC-M offense off the field. That is our goal every game but I am sure (Nederland defensive coordinator Delbert) Spell will try to throw a wrinkle in our plans. The good thing is our offense is an offense weather will not restrict so let it rain, rain, rain.” Vidor’s offense is the leading offense in District 20-4A with an average of 396.3 yards a game while Nederland’s defense ranks next to last giving up 330.5 yards a contest. Vidor has the league’s second best defense after allowing 263.3 yards a game and Nederland’s offense is next to last with 229.4 put up a contest.

[b]Cards, Bobcats set for Bayou Bowl showdown Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY —[/b] The coaches can call it a normal game and the players can go through practices like normal but tonight is far from normal at Larry B. Ward Stadium. The Bayou Bowl will take place tonight as the Bridge City Cardinals entertain the Orangefield Bobcats. The Cardinals lead the all-time series 11-6 and Bridge City won 14-7 last year. It is a big night for both teams as this year’s edition of the Bayou Bowl has playoff implications on the line for the first time in several years. Bridge City (5-3, 1-2) can all but lock up a playoff spot with a win tonight while Orangefield (4-4, 1-2) will be looking to stay in the playoff hunt. Bridge City ends its regular season next week by traveling to face the winless Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns while Orangefield will play host to the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. “It honestly is far from a normal game,” Cardinals’ coach Cris Stump said. “No. 1 Orangefield is our rival and No. 2 we win this game and next week and we are in the playoffs. That is certainly a good feeling. It is not hard to get focused this week.” This is the first Bayou Bowl for first-year Orangefield coach Brian Huckabay and he can tell both communities are excited about this year’s contest. “There are rivalries all over the state,” Huckabay said. “I have been a part of different ones in different regions and it is good for high school sports. You want it to be a friendly rivalry. It is what makes this game so much fun.” The fun will start at 7:30 p.m. as the Cardinals try to slow down what has been a very successful Orangefield offense that averages a district-best 383.4 yards a game. Quarterback Corey Huckabay leads the Bobcats with 783 yards with 12 touchdowns while Evan Guidry has 514 yards and eight trips to the endzone. Derrick Evans has 417 yards and four scores, Chase Parker has 299 yards and two touchdowns, Josh Shores has 222 yards and a score while Quinton Evans has 205 yards and five touchdowns. Rylan Cook has 177 yards and four touchdowns. “Corey Huckabay has made a huge difference,” Stump, whose defense gives up 241.9 yards a game, said. He is their rushing leader and he has made a big impact for those guys. (Bridge City defensive coordinator Rob) Caraway does a great job with our defense and Friday will be a defense played with assignments. Everyone has a job. You have to take care of your responsibilities and we are going to try to do it that way.” Stump has enjoyed the defensive change of heart for the Cardinals this season and he said the Bridge City fans have noticed. “Even in the Silsbee game, we were hearing chants of ‘Defense,’” Stump added. “We have not heard that in years. Thomas Taylor and Dakota Risinger have been making it hard for teams to run against us and our secondary has really been playing great all year.” Huckabay is looking for his team to cut back on the four turnovers the Bobcats had in a 56-20 loss to Silsbee last week. “We have been doing a great job all year of holding on to the football,” Huckabay said. “We will certainly be asking them to not do that again.” Orangefield must find a way to contain Bridge City sophomore running back Matt Menard. Menard leads District 21-3A in rushing with 788 yards to go with eight touchdowns. “Here lately the fans are screaming every time Matt touches the ball,” Stump said. “Matt is self-motivated and a shy kid and I am glad he is on our team. I told you before, I would never want to try to tackle him.” Menard is not alone on the Bridge City offense. Quarterback Josh Lemoine has thrown for 696 yards and 10 touchdowns. Cameron Dishon has rushed for 152 yards and leads the team with 16 receptions for 301 yards and seven touchdowns. Menard and Luke Rhodes each have 11 catches. The Bridge City offense averages 244.3 yards per game while the Orangefield defense gives up 299.1 yards a contest “Bridge City has a quarterback that is very effective and they can easily make big plays on special teams,” Huckabay said. “They are one of the best defenses in our district. We are going to have to identify their key players and limit those guys. We have to be on top of our game because Bridge City is a balanced team.” Both coaches reported they have tried their best to keep their kids focused on simply playing the game this week like a normal week. “They kids really don’t need to be told anything this week to get motivated,” Huckabay said. “It is a big week the kids really look forward to. We try to approach it the same way as always and I have learned you don’t change your ordinary routine.” Stump agreed the atmosphere will feel like the Cardinals are already in the playoffs tonight at Larry B. Ward Stadium. “Our guys practiced well all week,” Stump said. “It has not been a hard thing to do to get them fired up this week. Our fans have been great all year long and I expect the same thing when Orangefield comes to town."

[b]Bears face Raiders in pivotal 20-4A tilt Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS —[/b] Two squads that suffered tough setbacks last week both look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive in District 20-4A tonight when the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears welcome the Lumberton Raiders to Battlin’ Bear Stadium. The Bears (3-5,1-4) fell to third-place Vidor 49-15 last week while the Raiders (4-4, 1-4) dropped a 39-6 decision to first-place Port Neches-Groves. “It should be a good little battle,” said LC-M coach Randy Crouch. “Lumberton plays a very physical brand of football. Their linebacker (Anthony Beard) might be the best in the area.” The Bears check in averaging 275.6 yards a game offensively while the Raider defense allows 281.4. The contest will feature 20-4A’s top two leading passers in Lumberton quarterback Ryan Hughes and LC-M quarterback Hunter Gonzales. LC-M also has the area’s leading receiver in Zack Sonnier. Gonzales has completed 125-of-217 passes for 1,305 yards and seven touchdowns. Sonnier has been on the receiving end 65 times for 724 yards and seven TDs. Johnny Epps, a solid defensive back, also has 23 receptions for 225 yards and a TD receiving. Tevvin Jones leads the Bear ground attack with 467 yards and three TDs on 78 carries. Gonzales also has 267 yards on the ground and nine TDs. “Both teams are pretty evenly matched,” said Crouch. “The field could be sloppy after all the rain we are supposedly getting. It might be one of those deals where turnovers could be the deciding factor.” The Bear defense, which is allowing a district-high 355.4 yards a gain, will look to slow down a balanced Raider attack that is gobbling up 297.1yards an outing. Hughes has completed 85-of-152 passes for 1,327 yards and 10 TDs. His favorite targets have been Jesse Sparks (23-349-3), Kyler Keith (17-345-3) and Chase McDonald (14-293-1). Hughes also leads the ground attack with 364 yards and a TD on 83 carries. Tailback Ryan Asher has rumbled for 321 yards and six TDs on 76 totes. “They are extremely balanced and that Hughes kid is pretty accurate,” said Crouch. “They’ll give our defense a challenge. It should be a great game. It’s the last home game for our seniors so I know they would like to play really well.”

[b]Mustangs hoping to clip Hawks Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE —[/b] Long-time West Orange-Stark head coach Dan Hooks hopes the Mustangs have all their ducks in a row when the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks come rolling into town tonight. There just may be plenty of ducks swimming around Hooks Stadium after a heavy amount of rain is likely to douse the entire Southeast Texas area. “I hope it doesn’t become too, too bad,” said Hooks. “By the time the game rolls around, it’s likely to be a quagmire out here. You always hate to play a Mud Bowl.” The Mustangs (6-2, 2-1) certainly find themselves in a good position and a win over the Hawks (4-4, 2-1) would pretty much seal a playoff spot out of District 21-3A. “It should be a good little game,” said Hooks. “Hardin-Jefferson, like other teams in our district, have really improved this year. They have several gifted skill people and they’re defense isn’t bad either.” Both teams are coming off big wins last week with the Mustangs taking down Orange County rival Bridge City 29-15 while the Hawks dumped last-place Hamshire-Fannett 24-8. The Mustang offense, which chews up 277.4 yards a game, is led by junior quarterback Reggie Garrett. Garrett has passed for 883 yards and eight touchdowns. Receiver Mark Roberts has 22 receptions for 356 yards and two touchdowns. Tailback Britton Lindsey, despite fighting injuries, leads the ground game with 410 yards and five TDs on 84 carries. James Haynes has 289 yards and four TDs on 21 carries. Coach Hooks is proud of the way the Mustangs have performed this year. Underclassmen have really stepped up their play and have played a ton of minutes all season with the Mustangs battling the injury bug and sickness. “Some of our young ones have had to be thrown into the fire a lot this year, probably earlier then what we really wanted wanted them to do,” said Hooks. “They’ve stepped in and have really been impressive. We’ve been banged up all year. It seems like one week we’ll see two kids go down with injuries and one will come back and vice versa. Right now, it looks like we’re getting healthier. That’s going to help us in these last two weeks to build more chemistry.” The Hawks only have 21-3A’s fifth-ranked defense as they allow 354.8 yards a game. On offense, the Hawks have a nice two-headed monster in the backfield in quarterback Blake Venable and running back Jacoby Turner. Venable has rushed for 621 yards and seven TDs on 119 carries and has passed for 697 yards and four TDs. Turner has rumbled for 652 yards and eight TDs on 95 carries for an offense that is averaging 278.5 yards an outing. Receiver James Morrison has 12 catches for 234 yards and a TD. They will face a young Mustang defense that has stepped up in a big way. WO-S allows just a mere 184.1 yards a game, which is the best among all Southeast Texas football units. Not bad for a group that sometimes starts nine underclassmen. “Offensively, the Hawks are pretty darn good,” said Hooks. “That Venable kid is tough and physical. He’s gotten so much stronger this season and is a good leader. The Turner kid, we’ve got to keep him in front of us. He’s trouble when he gets in the open field.”

[b]Cardinals, Mustangs meet in crucial 21-3A tilt Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY —[/b] It has been since 1975 since a Bridge City team has defeated a team with the name West Orange. The Cardinals defeated West Orange 21-0 that year and since West Orange-Stark is a perfect 24-0 against Bridge City. “Everyone knows Bridge City has never beat West Orange-Stark,” Bridge City coach Cris Stump said. “Our kids are excited to at least try to end that. No doubt this is the most confidence we have had going into a game against the Mustangs. We may be totally wrong but we are confident we can win if we play well.” WO-S coach Dan Hooks knows this year’s Cardinals (5-2, 1-1) will be tough for his Mustangs (5-2, 1-1) to take down again to make it 25 in a row. “The Cardinals are much improved on both sides of the ball,” Hooks said. “They now tackle people and don’t give up too many points.” It has been a dramatic change over the last two years for Bridge City coach Cris Stump and his Cardinals on defense. The Cardinals gave up 539 points in 2007 along with 500.2 yards a game. Bridge City knocked it down to 311.3 per game and 160 points in eight games last season. This year the Cardinals have given up 114 points in seven contests and 252.3 yards per game. WO-S appears to have found its offense after last week’s 62-0 thumping of Hamshire-Fannett. James Haynes found the end zone three times in the game and rushed for 156 yards. Quarterback Reggie Garrett rushed for 97 yards and had five touchdowns on the ground. Britton Lindsey continues to lead the Mustangs in rushing with 410 yards and five touchdowns. Garrett has completed 56 of his 115 pass attempts with eight touchdowns. Mark Roberts has a team-high 20 receptions for 350 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs’ offense is averaging 284.9 yards a game in 2009. Besides being impressed with the Cardinals’ defense, Hooks said his defense better keep an eye on the Bridge City offense. “(Matt) Menard, (Cameron) Dishon and (Josh) Lemoine are all a year older and are making some plays for Coach Stump over there,” Hooks said. Menard has bruised his way to 695 yards and eight touchdowns this season while Lemoine has passed for 603 yards and nine touchdowns. Dishon does his damage all over the field. The sophomore has rushed for 160 yards and caught 14 passes for 275 yards. Dishon has a total of 12 touchdowns. “We saw film of them against Silsbee and our kids are well aware of how good the Cardinals are this season,” Hooks said. “It is going to be a tough game. A lot of the points scored on us came off turnovers where the other team didn’t have to drive too far. We didn’t do that last week and we certainly can’t do that this week.” Stump is wanting to make sure his Cardinals give themselves the best chance to win against the Mustangs. “Last year they scored 35 points without their offense being on the field,” Stump said. “We have to stop that 35 for sure.”

[b]Bobcats welcome 21-3A-leading Tigers Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD —[/b] It will be Orangefield’s turn to take a crack against first-place Silsbee tonight. The Tigers (3-4, 2-0) will be looking to make it a sweep of Orange County after they defeated both West Orange-Stark (13-7) and Bridge City (28-21) at the friendly confines of Tiger Stadium the last two weeks. Now the Tigers face an Orangefield team that is ready to battle them head-on after a rough trek to Sour Lake last week. The Bobcats (4-3, 1-1) fell to Hardin-Jefferson 28-21 in a tight one and would like no better than to pull an upset over the 21-3A leading Tigers. “It was a tough loss but the kids regrouped well starting on Saturday,” said Bobcat head coach Brian Huckabay. “The kids have really practiced well since Monday and they’re focused on the task at hand.” The Bobcats outgained H-J 334-301 last week but H-J quarterback Blake Venable’s six-yard touchdown run in the fourth gave the Hawks a much-needed win. The Bobcats check in with easily 21-3A’s top-ranked offense. The Bobcats are chewing up 408.9 yards a game. Silsbee’s offense is second, averaging 287.8 a game. The Bobcats also own 21-3A’s top rushing offense, one that has gained 2,544 yards on the ground. Quarterback Corey Huckabay leads the arsenal with 738 yards and 12 TDs on 107 carries. Evan Guidry has 488 yards and six TDs on 90 totes. Derrick Evans (33-378-4), Chase Parker (41-299-2), Josh Shores (22-217-1), Quinton Evans (29-203-5) and Rylan Cook (34-177-4) have all been factors as well carrying the leather. Huckabay has also passed for 318 yards and three TDs. Silsbee allows just 257 yards a contest. “Against a team like Silsbee, you want to get some nice long drives, move the chains and play mistake-free football,” said Huckabay. “You don’t want to give them good field position that they can take advantage of. You always like to pin your opponents deep in their own territory.” The Bobcat defense, which ranks fourth in allowing 289.3 yards per game, will have to face arguably 21-3A’s most athletic and dynamic player in Silsbee quarterback Jeremy Johnson. Johnson, who has committed to the West Virginia University, has completed 89-of-164 passes for 1,384 yards and 12 touchdowns. He passed for 227 yards and two scores against Bridge City last week. He also has 246 yards on the ground and five TDs. He has three outstanding targets in receivers Prentice Lane (21-376-2), Pheal Hill (19-347-4) and Kelson McDaniel (15-342-1). “Silsbee has some excellent talent and they’re off to a great start in district,” said Huckabay. “There’s such a thin line with teams in this district. Everyone is really competitive and everybody is a challenge for their opponents. To win, you have to be on top of your game each week and that means cutting down on mistakes like penalties and turnovers. Teams that do that are the ones that usually come out on top.”

Cards head to Silsbee to fight for first Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader SILSBEE — The Bridge City Cardinals are 1-0 in District 21-3A for the first time under Cris Stump. The thought of getting to 2-0 might seem like an uphill climb as the Cardinals venture to Silsbee tonight to face the Tigers. Silsbee (2-4, 1-0) is coming off a huge 13-6 win over the West Orange-Stark Mustangs while the Cardinals (5-1, 1-0) knocked off Hardin-Jefferson, 20-10. The Tigers dominate the Cardinals in the all-time series 30-6-1. The Tigers won the first game 68-0 in 1960 and won last year 21-0. Stump knows the Cardinals will have to be on their game to take down the Tigers who have faced some of the best competition in the area. “They have played Newton, Jasper and West Orange-Stark so game speed will not be a problem for those guys,†Stump said. The Cardinals are going to have to find a way to deal with one of the area’s best quarterbacks in Jeremy Johnson. Johnson has thrown for 1,157 yards and 10 touchdowns while also rushing for 142 yards and four touchdowns. “Johnson is a tremendous athlete that can go at anytime,†Stump said. “When he pulls the ball down and takes off, he can go for 40 yards. Their running backs look like the same running backs Silsbee had 10 years ago. Nothing changes over there because it always works.†Chris Barnes and Rakheem Bolton share the load at running back for the Tigers. Barnes has 113 yards and a touchdown while Bolton has rushed for four scores. “Their wide receivers are also great,†Stump pointed out. “They are a scary team.†Silsbee ranks second in the district with 277.8 yards per game while Bridge City’s defense ranks second with 236.3 given up a game. Bridge City enters the contest with a great duo on offense themselves. Matt Menard is second in rushing in 21-3A with 587 yards on the ground with six touchdowns. The Cardinals also rely heavily on the play of Cameron Dishon. Dishon has 139 yards and two touchdowns rushing with 244 yards on 12 receptions and six more scores. Dishon can also be electric on defense and special teams with a total of 11 touchdowns on the year. Josh Lemoine has 451 yards passing with eight touchdowns. Lemoine has also rushed for 135 yards. The Bridge City offense averages 242.3 yards a game while Silsbee’s defense is allowing 253.2 yards a contest. “We cannot have turnovers,†Stump said. “We also have to find a way to point some points on the board because Silsbee is going to try to score in large numbers. The kids feel good about themselves going into the game. Now we are going to go out and see if we can catch them.â€

Bobcats seeking road win in Sour Lake Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader SOUR LAKE — Another week and another difficult challenge awaits the Orangefield Bobcats in District 21-3A. Last week the Bobcats (4-2, 1-0) had no problems with the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns. This week the Bobcats travel to Sour Lake to face the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks who come in 2-4 and 0-1 after a loss to Bridge City. “After the first week of district, all over the state half the teams are 1-0 and half the teams are 0-1,†Orangefield coach Brian Huckabay said. “We always want to be one of those teams which starts 1-0. I truly believe this team will always take it one game at a time and not look at what is past us. Our kids were concentrated on Hamshire-Fannett and soon after the win we were focused on the Hawks.†The Hawks present a new problem for the Bobcats. Quarterback Blake Venable and running back Jacoby Turner team up for one of the best backfields in the area. Venable has thrown for 447 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 422 yards and six scores. Turner is one of the best runners in the district with 549 yards on 75 carries with five touchdowns. “They are certainly a difficult challenge,†Huckabay said. “Hardin-Jefferson is very good on defense and has tons of weapons all over the field. After losing last week their kids are going to know it is a big game for them to stay alive. We might be walking into a hornet’s nest. We will have to keep an eye on Venable and Turner. Those two really stand out.†The Bobcats will also be looking to keep one of the area’s most prolific offenses in tune. Orangefield comes into tonight’s contest averaging 419.7 yards a game. The Bobcats’ 2,250 rushing yards are more yards than Bridge City, West Orange-Stark and Little Cypress-Mauriceville each have total on the season. Leading the attack is senior quarterback Corey Huckabay who has rushed for 661 yards on 89 carries with a district-high 10 touchdowns on the ground. Evan Guidry has 442 yards and six touchdowns while Derrick Evans has 336 yards and four scores. Chase Parker has rushed for 247 yards and two touchdowns, Josh Shores has 186 yards and one touchdown while Quinton Evans has 186 yards and five touchdowns. Rylan Cook is the seventh running back with at least 100 yards. He has 120 yards and three touchdowns. Corey Huckabay has 268 yards in the air on 12-for-25 passing with three touchdowns. “We want to keep the football out of their hands,†Huckabay said. “We have done a great job of that so far this year and it is always our game plan. We don’t really keep up with time of possession in high school football but we count first downs. We figure if we make first downs we are keeping them off the field.†Orangefield has 122 first downs on the season and has given up 86 to their opponents.

Pirates hope to 'steal' one at PN-G Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader PORT NECHES — No problem Jeff Mathews, all you have to do tonight is try to defeat an undefeated team. Mathews and his Vidor Pirates will be headed to the Reservation tonight to take on the 6-0 Port Neches-Groves Indians. The Pirates (5-1, 2-1) will be looking to keep pace with the Indians and Central Jaguars who are both 3-0 in District 20-4A. PN-G leads the all-time series over Vidor 27-9-1 but it was the Pirates winning last year, 23-14. This is a new year, PN-G has a new coach in Brandon Faircloth and Mathews is more than impressed. “All around, this is the best team we have seen all year,†Mathews said. “They can pass and run the ball and they can stop the pass and the run on defense. Their special teams are outstanding. When I watch film I always watch to see one spot on a team we can pick on as their weakness. In PN-G, there really and honestly is not a weakness.†PN-G comes in averaging the district’s third best offense on paper. The Indians average 344.5 yards a contest. Caleb Harmon is second in the district with 963 yards and 11 touchdowns. Brennan Doty for PN-G leads 20-4A with 932 yards passing with seven touchdowns with five interceptions. Blake Reyenga is PN-G’s top receiver with 21 receptions for 306 yards and three touchdowns while Spencer DeRon has 16 grabs for 327 yards and four scores. “When you watch Harmon on film, he always falls forward and picks up another yard or two,†Mathews said. “He is so hard to bring down. I did not see one time this year where one guy tackled him because it always takes two. Their offense is going to be a big, big challenge for our defense.†The Vidor defense is second in the district to PN-G. The Pirates are giving up 245.5 yards a game. PN-G’s top-rated defense is allowing 215.3 yards a contest while the Vidor offense is on top of the league with 401.7 yards a game. Shayne Pitman leads the Pirates with 775 yards and eight touchdowns while Kevin Tate is right behind him with 549 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jacob Peevey is also in the top of the district running backs with 503 yards and four scores. “We cannot have any turnovers or any penalties,†Mathews said. “The four games we lost last year and the one this year, we lost the turnover battle in all five of them. We also have to control the clock. Those will all be key for us at the Reservation." “When I got this job 11 years ago and was 30-years-old and I knew it all, it was amazing the mystic of that place. You stop and think of all the great coaches and the championships that have taken place on that field. It is a magical place and PN-G is what Texas football is all about. It is going to be a huge, exciting game.â€
