Mustangs facing a 'Royal' test Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — After having a week off to catch their breathe, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs will be staring down some tough customers on the road this week as they wrap up their non-district slate at Brookshire-Royal. Sure, the Falcons may be 1-3, but they’re record is deceptive. The Falcons downed Hempstead 21-20 in their opener and have fell to Bryan Rudder (21-19), and long-time playoff programs in Sealy (64-37) and Bellville (28-21 in overtime). “We hope we don't go to their place and end up in a Hornets’ nest,†said long-time WO-S coach Dan Hooks. “They’ve played some pretty good folks and believe it or not, this will be their first home game. They’ll be waiting on us.†Royal quarterback Eric Mathews has had a superb season thus for. He’s completed 65-of-97 passes for 769 yards and four touchdowns and he has rushed for 336 yards and three TDs on 58 carries. Tailback Brandon Williams has darted for 417 yards and five TDs on 68 totes and is an excellent receiver out of the backfield with 22 catches for 278 yards and a TD. Receiver Shane Alexander has 25 receptions for 307 yards and two TDs. “They have such an explosive attack,†said Hooks. “They probably have four guys on offense and four on defense that can go play college ball just about any place. They got after Bellville’s tail last week and almost pulled that one out. Their quarterback is a great athlete and that Williams kid can go at tailback. They’re a better team then the one we beat (33-7) at home last year.†Coach Hooks and the 10th-ranked Mustangs (3-1) certainly enjoyed their bye week after falling to Jasper 23-13 in their last tilt. “Jasper taught us a whole bunch that night,†said Hooks. “Nothing went right that night. That goes for the offense, defense and special teams. The kids weren’t happy with that performance and have really been working hard in practice. We’ve had some pretty serious practices in all phases of the game and the kids have really gotten serious. They’re ready to play some football.†Mustang junior quarterback Reggie Garrett has completed 34-of-76 passes for 582 yards and seven TDs. Sophomore tailback Britton Lindsey leads the ground arsenal with 387 yards and four TDs on 76 carries while junior receiver Mark Roberts leads the way with 10 catches for 253 yards and two TDs for an offense that is getting 293.8 yards a game. The Royal offense, averaging 381 yards a contest, will face a stern Mustang defense that is allowing just 213.3 yards an outing. “Defensively, they’ll try to stretch out our defense with their spread, which is good because we’ve seen some of that early on against Nederland and LC-M,†said Hooks. “Hopefully we can cause a few turnovers and get out of there with a win.†It will be the Mustangs’ final tuneup before they head to Silsbee Oct. 9 to open up District 21-3A play. WO-S currently owns a 29-game district winning streak. “We’ve got two tough games ahead of us on the road,†said Hooks. “It all really counts for real against Silsbee and we want to play much more sound football against Royal then we did in our last two games. It seems like our district might be much more interesting, especially with the emergence of Bridge City and Orangefield. Silsbee will definitely be trying to set up a trap for us when we motor into their place Oct. 9. This time of the year, you just want to improve each week and we’re definitely looking for that this Friday.†Directions to Royal High School:Take I-10 West to Houston; Follow I-10 to San Antonio; Take the FM-359 exit, Exit 732, toward Brookshire; Turn right on Waller Ave/FM- 359; Left onto US-90/FM 359; Turn Right onto Baines St/FM 359; Take slight right onto FM 362; Left on Royal Road – should see stadium.

Pirates set to tangle with Jags in 20-4A opener Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BEAUMONT — The Vidor Pirates and Beaumont Central Jaguars have played every year since 2002 and none will be as big as tonight’s battle at Babe Zaharias Stadium. Central (2-1) holds a 16-1 mark over Vidor (3-0) yet the last seven games have been close and tonight’s game could decide a district championship. Vidor has all the expectations this year and Central has a great record against three 5A schools so far this year. Central has outscored Vidor 172-134 since 2002 and has beaten Port Arthur Memorial and Galveston Ball so far in 2009 after losing to Beaumont West Brook. Memorial has not lost since. Vidor has taken down Beaumont Kelly, Houston St. Thomas and Hardin-Jefferson. Besides taking on a tough Jaguars’ team, the Pirates will also have to deal with a rough crowd at The Babe. “It is never easy going to The Babe,†Vidor coach Jeff Mathews said. “Our kids are mentally tough and will not be intimidated. Central won’t be intimidated either. It is like a MMA or UFC fight. Central is a striker and we want the fight on the ground. It is Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar. We want to play our game and get them on the ground before they throw the knock out.†And boy does Vidor like the game on the ground. The Pirates have ran the ball 139 times out of their 148 offensive plays in their first three games. Vidor leads 20-4A teams with 494 yards a game with Kevin Tate leading the way with 330 yards on 34 carries and seven touchdowns. Shayne Pitman has 315 yards while Jacob Peevey has rushed for 311 yards and three scores. Quarterback Nick Dozier has only thrown nine passes, completing eight, with two touchdowns. Vidor’s defense also leads 20-4A with 196 yards given up a contest in 2009. Mathews knows the Pirates have not seen a team like the Jaguars though. Central comes in averaging 283 yards a game while giving up 271.7 on defense. Running back Keith O’Neal has 216 yards and three touchdowns while Nijel Daw has 195 yards. Quarterback Donte Wilkerson has thrown for 300 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. “They are scary,†Mathews said. “They have speed everywhere on the field. Even if you look at their offensive guards, those guys explode off the ball. We are going to have to play at a level we have not played at yet. I’ll go into a game with my kids any day of the week. I think we have a shot at the win. The West Orange-Stark scrimmage really helped us see this speed.†Mathews has been impressed with his team’s ability to get better week after week this season. “We are better than our first scrimmage and we are better than when we played Hardin-Jefferson,†Mathews said. “Our kids have never once questioned anything we have asked them to do. It will not take much motivation this week to get them ready to play. I have told them this is what they play for. It is going to be exciting to say the least.â€

Bobcats ready to face ranked Eagles Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader NEWTON — Orangefield coach Brian Huckabay has preached the same things week after week to his Bobcats. The talks and preparation has paid off the last three weeks as Orangefield has won three in a row heading into tonight’s game at Newton. The Eagles come in 4-0 and lead the all-time series 23-8-2. Newton and Orangefield tied the first contest, 14-14, in 1964. Huckabay is not worried about the Eagles and is only concerned with his Bobcats’ team and what they can control. “It is a big game every week,†Huckabay said. “I hope there is not more excitement this week from our guys than last week. I hope they bring the same level of play each and every week. If there is change then there is a problem.†Newton presents a whole new problem for the Bobcats. The Eagles have played a tough non-district schedule and came out on top all four times. Newton has defeated Corrigan-Camden and Silsbee on the road and defeated East Chambers and Diboll in Newton. “Not much has changed in Newton in an awful long time,†Huckabay said. “We are similar in philosophies and they have a great program. I am looking forward to a great football game.†Newton is led by a powerful duo of running backs. La Ray Alfred leads the way with 348 yards on 33 carries and three touchdowns while Kelvin Bennett has 294 on 35 totes and three scores. Newton quarterback Halston Flanigan has completed 10-of-17 passes for 326 yards and three touchdowns with four interceptions. Desmond Beatty leads Newton with five catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns. “It’s a football game,†Huckabay said. “I’m not worried about our opponent.†One of the main reasons for Huckabay’s confidence has been the play of the Bobcats over the last three weeks, all Orangefield wins. The Bobcats are averaging 387.3 yards of offense a game with Corey Huckabay leading the way with 430 yards on 52 carries and seven touchdowns. Derrick Evans has 286 yards on only 17 carries with four scores while Evan Guidry has 273 yards on 49 totes and three scores. Chase Parker has added 166 yards and two touchdowns and Rylan Cook has three touchdowns. Josh Shores and Quinton Evans have also been valuable for the Orangefield running game this year. “I’m happy for the team,†Huckabay said. “They deserve to have a chance for success. All their hard work and efforts is paying off.â€

BC's thoughts remain on Kelly Bulldogs Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — The Bridge City Cardinals are done thinking they are too good to worry about an opponent. That was so 2008. The Cardinals of 2009 are more worried about each week and this week is no exception. Bridge City will play host to the Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs at Larry B. Ward Stadium. Kelly (2-2) leads the series 7-6-1. Bridge City (3-1) won the first game between the two schools, 27-12, in 1990. Bridge City is coming off a 42-6 thumping of the Buna Cougars, a game in which saw Cameron Dishon go off for four touchdowns. This was a week after he only saw the ball a few times against LC-M, a game in which the Cardinals lost. “Dishon has been a weapon for us,†Bridge City coach Cris Stump said. “We decided after the game with LC-M we had to find ways to get the ball into our guys’ hands. We did not do that against the Bears. We are going to mix things up with him and Matt (Menard).†Dishon has scored a total of seven touchdowns in 2009 with four coming in the air and one on the ground. Dishon has also scored on a punt and kickoff return. Menard continues to lead the way for the Cardinals on the ground with 272 yards on 49 carries with three touchdowns. Quarterback Josh Lemoine has rushed for 122 yards and thrown for 283 with five touchdowns and three interceptions on 26-of-65 passing. Dishon is the Cardinals leading receiver with 156 yards on seven catches. Luke Rhodes has five receptions for 11 yards while Jason Broussard, Devin Oceguera and Cale Hyde each have three catches. The Cardinals offense is averaging 229 yards a game. Bridge City’s defense, which gives up 236.8 yards a contest, will face a Kelly team which seems balanced on paper. Quarterback Dakota Eddins has 542 yards and two touchdowns while Tyler Palermo leads the team with 324 yards on the ground with six scores. Melvin Adderton has 213 rushing for Kelly with a touchdown and Patrick Cook has 112 yards and six touchdowns. “Offensively they have kids who can run the ball and that quarterback is pretty good throwing the ball,†Stump said. “I have really been impressed with their linebackers on defense. Those guys fly to the football. It is like I keep telling our kids and I am sure they are tired of hearing it, we have to win the special teams and turnover battles for us to win this game.†Special teams has been a key part to several Bridge City wins this season. Besides the electric return game, the Cardinals have also been blessed with one of the areas best kickers in Devin Bertrand. Bertrand has knocked down 12 extra points this year and also has a 45-yard field goal to his credit. He also has sent many kickoffs deep into the endzone for touch backs. “We spend a lot of time on special teams,†Stump said. “I am not sure we spend more time on it other teams but we might. It certainly has paid off. It is a case of when the kids see it works, they want to work at it and be better at it.†With a win tonight, the Cardinals would match last year’s win total when the Cardinals were 4-4. “We feel good about ourselves and sometimes you have to worry you feel too good,†Stump said. “I think we learned that lesson last year. We are anxious about getting No. 4 this week. We have done a good job staying focused on week to week. We are not worried about Hardin-Jefferson to start district, we are worried about Kelly right now.â€

Deweyville welcomes Anahuac in 23-2A opener Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — Throw away what happened in non-district because the District 23-2A season kicks off for real tonight at Pirate Stadium as Deweyville welcomes the Anahuac Panthers. The Pirates (1-3) look to end a three-game skid against the Panthers (3-1), who are definitely playoff experienced as the 23-2A campaign kicks off. The Pirates are coming off a tough 31-8 loss to the West Sabine Tigers last week and our looking for their first win since getting a season-opening win against Sabine Pass. Deweyville is paced on offense by senior tailback Keeton Addison, who has rushed for 280 yards and three touchdowns. Addison, who missed the Pirates’ game against Hemphill in a loss due to an ankle injury, played very little against West Sabine last week but should see his time increase this week. Trey Craft has stepped in and has done a nice job, zipping for 199 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries. Pirate quarterback Michael Williams has completed 32-of-58 passes for 294 yards and two TDs. Tight end Woody Woodall has eight catches for 72 yards and Addison has nine grabs for 67 yards. After losing to Kinkaid 20-8 to start the season the Panthers have defeated Danbury (41-9), Tomball Concordia Lutheran (28-0) and Hitchcock (49-14). The Panthers currently have 23-2A’s leading rusher in tailback Dewan Childress, who has zipped for 594 yards and six touchdowns on 72 carries. Quarterback Cody Johnson has completed 20-of-29 passes for 399 yards and seven touchdowns. His favorite target has been Braxton Mayes, who has hauled in 11 catches for 275 yards and five touchdowns.
