Injuries, sickness plaque Cards heading into Buna Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Every team this time of year is dealing with injuries. Players roll their ankles, shoulders start to ache and bruises start to pop up in all sorts of places. Things are no different for the Bridge City Cardinals (2-1) this week as they get ready to travel to face the Buna Cougars (2-1). This will be the fifth overall meeting between the two schools with Bridge City holding a 3-1 edge in the series. The Cardinals won the first ever meeting between the two schools, 36-0, in 2000 and Bridge City has outscored Buna 128-20 in the series. This group of Cardinals comes in banged up after last week’s 16-0 loss to Little Cypress-Mauriceville. The flu bug has hit the Cardinals’ roster and show has a rash of injuries, some happening away from practice. “We are a little banged up this week,†Cardinals’ coach Cris Stump said. “The flu bug hit us and I talked to my brother (Craig Stump) and it was at West Brook last week. So it is making its rounds.†Stump said three Cardinals were hurt at their homes including a player tripping over a chair and one cutting his foot when getting into a hot tub. The Cardinals do expect to have running back Matt Menard back after he suffered a concussion last week against the Bears. “Matt feels good and was cleared for Friday,†Stump said. “Josh (Lemoine) feels better each day. He has a toe and knee sprain plus he has back pains. I would be very surprised if he was not out there Friday. The only one doubtful is Luke Rhodes. He has had ankle issues since last year and played through it. Now there is scar tissue which can be quite painful.†Menard has rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns in 2009. Lemoine has 111 yards rushing and 210 yards passing with two touchdowns. Rhodes is the Cardinals’ leading receiver with five receptions while Cameron Dishon has four catches for 121 yards and two scores. The Cardinals’ offense is averaging 222.7 yards a game. Stump did say offensive lineman Dylan Mulhollan will be out with a foot injury. “Obviously if the kids miss school they don’t practice,†Stump said. “If they are here, they let us know what they can and can’t do. If they start to feel sick, then they are able to back off. As coaches we realize we are not the only ones dealing with it when a kid is hurt or sick.†Buna has already been beaten by an Orange County team this year, a 37-14 loss to the Orangefied Bobcats. Orangefield racked up 368 yards on the ground against Buna and limited the Cougars to 189 yards rushing and 63 passing in the game. “Buna looks like Buna,†Stump said. “They are not a huge team but will get after you. If you make a mistake, they are going to make you pay for it. “Our kids took the loss well last week. They are mad. They realize what could have happened and what opportunity was there for them but not to take anything away from LC-M. They are ready to get back on the winning track.†Stump said his team did a nice job of not making penalties in the loss to LC-M but remembers the Cardinals committed their first turnovers of the season in the game. Bridge City eventually turned the ball over four times to LC-M. “We cut down on penalties but turned the ball over four times,†Stump said. “We had plays to make and didn’t make them. We are going to have to cut down on that and balance those two things out a bit.†Dakota Risinger and the Cardinals’ defense has limited opponents to 240.7 yards a contest this season.

Mustangs head to 'Alamo' to face rested Bulldogs Van Wade The Orange Leader JASPER — It’s time to make that “Alamo†trip for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs. WO-S and Jasper have had some knock-down dragouts in years past and tonight should be no different. The Mustangs, ranked No. 3 in the Class 3A state poll, checks in with a 3-0 record after surviving in a 21-20 overtime win against Kirbyville last week. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs (1-1) will be quite rested after having a bye week last week. Jasper fell to No. 1 Gilmer 42-14 in their season opener but bounced back the next week with a second-half rally to defeat a stubborn Kirbyville unit 31-22. “Jasper is going to be a strong test for our kids, especially at their place,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “They’ve played two tough customers early and are battle-tested.†Quarterback Sam Alvis leads first-year Jasper head coach Mike Bickham’s wishbone and sometimes three-back attack. Alvis has 186 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries and came up huge in the win over Kirbyville with 179 yards and four TDs on 24 carries in the win over Kirbyville. Running back Ben Armstrong has 178 yards and a TD on 40 totes. Karrion Morrisey has 121 yards and a Td off 34 carries and Jarrod Adams has 76 yards on seven carries. Adams leads the squad with four receptions for 52 yards. Alvis has completed just 6-of-15 passes for 72 yards. The Bulldog running game will be a challenge for Mustang DaJewel Nelson, who had 13 tackles and a sack against Kirbyville, and his defensive teammates. “Coach Bickham has installed an offense like Ron Dupree had at LC-M when he was there,†said Hooks. “They like to come right at you. You better be able to find who has the ball pretty quick. They’re a team that’s going to move the sticks on anybody. Our defense just has to be patient, like it was against Kirbyville last week.†Hooks is hoping for more consistency out of the Mustang offense. Penalties has hampered the unit quite a bit this season. “You just can’t go out and start every series with a first-and-15 or first-and-20,†said Hooks. “You get in that situation and defenses know what you have to do. The kids have been working hard this week in correcting that. They know we have an offense that can move the ball and without penalties, we can do a lot more things to open it up.†Mustang quarterback Reggie Garrett has completed 22-of-50 passes for 423 yards and six TDs. His favorite target thus far is receiver Mark ROberts, who has eight catches for 245 yards and two TDs. Sophomore tailback Britton Lindsey leads the ground arsenal with 327 yards and three TDs on 58 carries. Tonight’s tilt will be the first of three straight road games for the Mustangs. WO-S has a bye week next week and then visits Brookshire-Royal Oct. 2 and travels to Silsbee Oct. 9 to start District 21-3A play. “This little stretch here will help us build some more character,†said Hooks. “Our kids have always played on the road pretty well and our non-district schedule really gets us prepared for district. You just want to stay healthy and try to execute better each and every week.â€

Orangefield vs Tarkington Predictions?

I was hoping that we would have the new offense down by district but we appear to have gotten it down from the get go. In 3 games we have scored 16 touchdowns and 110 points! Our defense still needs a little work but overall I love where we are at. -

I agree. It would be very easy to overlook this week's game especially with a huge matchup with Newton looming next week. Coach Huckabay will keep his guys focused on one game at a time and the only thing that will be on our minds this week will be Tarkington. If we play mistake free football we will be 3-1 heading to Newton next week -
