  5. Angelle named MVP of All-Orange Leader Baseball Team By Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader It took a long time again this year before Orange County was knocked out of the baseball playoffs. Orangefield went all the way to the regional finals while Bridge City was knocked out in the regional semi-finals. The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears were back in the playoffs again this year while the West Orange-Stark Mustangs placed third in District 21-3A. Vidor was also in yet lost in a one-game playoff against Crosby in the bi-district round. To name a MVP this year for The 2010 All-Orange Leader Baseball Team was as tough as it has ever been with so many players having banner years. Orangefield senior Chase Angelle was selected as the MVP for his non-stop consistency with the Bobcats. Angelle went 11-1 with one save on the mound with a 1.75 ERA in 66 innings. Angelle twice saved Orangefield’s season in the playoffs with a huge win over Robinson and two wins in the same day over WO-S. Angelle struck out 77 batters in 15 appearances and is now headed to Lamar University. Angelle hit .418 at the plate in a very crucial spot for Orangefield, right behind Jacob Felts. Angelle drove in a team-high 48 runs and scored 25 times with 10 doubles and five home runs. Not far below Angelle is our Offensive Player of the Year, Orangefield senior Jace Statum. Statum, a future Texas A&M Aggie, batted .486 on the year with 50 runs, 54 hits, 30 RBI, 14 doubles and was on base 58-percent of the time. Statum was notorious for scoring all the way from first on a routine single and being the leader of the potent Orangefield offense which scored 322 runs this year. Orangefield senior Jacob Felts is our Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts behind the plate. Teams simply did not run on Felts because it was not a very smart thing to do. There were only four times when a runner even attempted to steal when Felts was behind the plate and he got one of the runners out. Felts is now headed to the University of Texas. The 2010 Newcomer of the Year goes to LC-M’s Mason Dallas. Dallas did not play much last season with the Bears but showed a lot of promise. This year he backed it up. Dallas batted .324 with nine doubles and 23 RBI for the Bears. Dallas hit .426 in district and was on base 51-percent of the time. Matt Hicks is the Pitcher of the Year after going 11-3 with one save. Hicks, who will play at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, had 132 strike outs and 26 walks in 92 1/3 innings pitched. He only gave up 18 earned runs and teams batted .210 against him. LC-M legend Steve Griffith is our Coach of the Year. Time and time again Griffith finds a way to get his Bears in the playoffs no matter what. This year’s Bears could have used youth as an excuse to not compete but Griffith and the Bears fought their way into the playoffs. It was another great year of baseball in Orange County and next year is shaping up to be the same. MVP: Chase Angelle, Orangefield Offensive Player of the Year: Jace Statum, Orangefield Defensive Player of the Year: Jacob Felts, Orangefield Pitcher of the Year: Matt Hicks, Bridge City Newcomer of the Year: Mason Dallas, LC-M Coach of the Year: Steve Griffith, LC-M FIRST TEAM P: Zane Anderson, WO-S 1B: Shane Waddell, LC-M 2B: Scott Vaughn, LC-M 3B: Joe Robertson, Bridge City SS: Quinton Evans, Orangefield OF: Joe Mojica, Vidor OF: Hunter Gonzales, LC-M OF: Mitchell Hubbard, Bridge City C: Jordan Darnall, WO-S Utility Player: Hunter Hagler, Vidor SECOND TEAM P: Trae Hester, Vidor 1B: Clayton Gearhart, WO-S 2B: Jonathan DeRamus, Orangefield 3B: Ryan Waddell, LC-M SS: Justin Sparrow, WO-S OF: Forrest Zoch, Bridge City OF: Corey Huckabay, Orangefield OF: Derrick Evans, Orangefield C: Mike Hester, Vidor Utility Player: Taylor Turley, WO-S
