7. No. 4 Bobcats keep rolling Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Before its late game Thursday night against Tyler All-Saints, the Orangefield Bobcats had played three games which lasted five innings each. The 3-0 Bobcats first steam rolled Liberty 16-1 before taking down Buna 11-1. It was much the same Thursday at the Orangefield Baseball Tournament as the No. 4 Bobcats put a 14-1 hurting on the Beaumont Central Jaguars. Corey Huckabay is feeling right at home in Orange and White as he scored three of the four times he came to the plate with a single and a RBI triple. Quinton Evans notched the win on the mound with four innings of work giving up one run on two hits with no walks and six strike outs. The lone Central run came in the first inning as the first two batters hit singles. It was the last hits Evans gave up. Texas A&M-bound Jace Statum scored twice with a double and also was a part of the best defensive play of the day. Statum made a running grab in the top of the fifth and then turn to fire back to first to double up a Central baserunner. Evans helped himself in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer which also scored Chase Angelle. Orangefield scored five in the first and then scored five more in the third. Derrick Evans had a two-RBI triple in the third and he also scored twice in the game. Jonathan Deramus scored twice after hitting a double and walking two times in the game. Kyle Fontenot also scored twice. Jacob Felts picked up a late RBI in the game after not being able to get much to hit much of the night. Felts did his part though on defense by catching a runner stealing in the first inning. The Port Arthur Memorial Titans notched two wins Thursday with a 6-5 win over Silsbee and a 12-7 victory over East Chambers. Kirbyville defeated Deweyville 9-3, Lumberton shut out Hamshire-Fannett 3-0 before losing to Beaumont Kelly 6-3. Deweyville will face Silsbee at 9 a.m. today at Buna High School while Hamshire-Fannett and Central will tangle at 9 a.m. at Orangefield. Kirbyville will face East Chambers at 11:15 a.m. at Buna while Buna and Memorial will face off at 6 p.m.
8. Wild Friday burns Nederland Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND —  NEDERLAND — The Nederland Bulldogs dropped an 8-7 decision to West Brook and then fell 8-5 in an eight-inning, epic struggle against the Bridge City Cardinals Friday night at their annual tournament, which continues today at noon.   At 2-2 in the tournament, Nederland will square off with C.E. King (1-3) at 12 p.m. for the consolation game. The championship matchup between BC and West Brook, who are both 3-0-1, is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.   Credit the Bulldogs for a gutsy comeback, however. The Cardinals owned a 4-0 lead until Nederland batted around for four runs in the fifth inning to the tie game.   BC scratched for a run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead after Dylan Mulhollan drove in Matt Menard. Nederland pitcher Anthony Hammond worked out of that jam with minimal damage, as BC left two runners in scoring position.   The Bulldogs responded quickly in the bottom half, picking up a lead off double from Tyler Smith, who was driven home on a single from Stephen Schlett.   After Jacob Pitts drew a walk, Carson Raines, who had two strikes on him, laid down a bunt-single to load the bases with no outs.   Making a Babe Ruth-like appearance, Kirby Bellow, who will run or pitch in a game until March 10, entered just needing to hit the ball somewhere in the outfield.   The plan backfired, however, as he hit a chopper to BC's Matt Hicks at shortstop. Hicks fielded and threw home for the first out. After a great deal of confustion, the Cardinals realized Bellow was not running and threw him out at first base for the second out.   Then they came back to the plate to catch Pitts, who was trying to slip in the winning run, for the third out. In the end, it was a 6-2-3-2 triple play.   The Cardinals then picked up three runs on five walks and a fielder's choice to take the final lead of the game at 8-5.   In the bottom half, Nederland managed two-out singles from Cody Laird and Nick Cardenas but the contest came to a close on a 6-to-4 put out.   Against the Bruins, Nederland, now 5-4 on the year, scored five runs in the third inning to take a 5-3 lead. West Brook tied in top of the fourth with two runs but the Bulldogs jumped back on top with two runs in the fifth to go up 7-5.   But three Nederland errors led to a three run-sixth inning for the Bruins. 9. Tribe escapes Langham Creek, 10-8   BAYTOWN — Amir Jalali slugged a grand slam in the third inning to give the Port Neches-Groves Indians a relaxing 10-1 advantage over Langham Creek Friday afternoon at the Baytown Tournament at Robert E. Lee High School.   But Langham scratched for a run in the fifth, two more in the sixth and then converted two PN-G errors into four runs in the seventh to bring the final score to 10-8.   Blake Reyenga took the hill for the last out, preserving the victory for the Indians, who had six hits and four errors in the contest.   Kane Benoit recorded a double, single and drove in Reyenga for an RBI.   Hunter Knox was the winning pitcher. He went the first three innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks. Alex Sanderson came in for the fourth and Jordan Rodriguez went 1.3 innings before handing things over to Reyenga.   With the win, the Tribe moves to 5-1 on the season and will be back in action at 12 p.m. in Baytown today for the semifinals round o the tournament. The championship game is set for 3 p.m. [Hidden Content]
10. Titans sack Buna, 8-5   ORANGEFIELD — Five runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third was all the Memorial Titans baseball team needed to earn an 8-5 victory over Buna at the Orangefield tournament on Friday night.   The win makes Memorial 7-1 on the season and it will now play the Bobcats at 7 p.m. today for the championship game.   Stedman Haynes was the winning pitcher, giving up five runs (two earned) on two hits in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out seven but walked seven as well. He also went 2-for-2 at the plate.   Rony Sanchez came in for the final out of 2-hour contest. Sanchez also went 3-for-3, including a two-run double in the first inning. He drove in a total of three runs and scored twice as well. Jesus Gutierrez was 2-for-3 with two runs. Paul Roy drove in two runs with a single in the first inning and Diego Marentes went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. He also scored two runs and had an RBI. [Hidden Content]
