Lee Orr drove in a pair of runs in the first with a double down the line in left off Brandon Orr and scored on a single by Nick Eubanks. In the second inning, the Cowboys added two more runs on an RBI double by Steven Irvine and a solo homerun by LCM Shon Landry. Nederland's Ryan Brauninger belted the Cowboys third home run of the game as McNeese went ahead 14-3.

Spring Synopsis: Pirates fell to Red Sox as Karstens has bad day The game: No. 5 starter candidate Jeff Karstens walked three, gave up three hits, allowed four earned runs and elevated his pitches a tad more than manager John Russell prefers -- even though the damage mostly came from one bad inning -- as the Pirates fell to Boston, 11-4, before 8,090 at City of Palms Park. Boston's 11 hits and nine walks from Pirates pitchers did in the visitors. Boston's Chip Ambres West Brook added a two-run homer against Sean Burnett.
  6. N.C. State 10, Wake Forest 3: N.C. State held Wake Forest hitless for the final eight innings and rolled past the Deacons at Wake Forest Baseball Park last night. Nederland's Dustin Hood, Weldon Woodall and Shane Kroker each had a hit and an RBI for the Deacons (10-9, 2-6), who scored all three of their runs in the first inning. Dusty Quattlebaum led off the second inning with a home run for the Wolfpack (11-10, 2-6), which scored four runs in the ninth. The two teams will play the final game of the series beginning at 1 p.m. today.
  7. Rebels Claim Series With 5-2 Win Over No. 24 Alabama Kevin Mort drew a lead-off walk in the fifth before moving to third on a fielding error at third on a grounder from Brett Basham. The misplayed ball sailed into left field, allowing Basham to reach and putting runners at the corners. Jordan Henry then came up with an RBI single to score Mort and move Basham to second.   8. The state baseball tournament still is more than two months away, but Moody and Calallen gave fans an early taste of what could be the battle for the regional championship. In a non-district matchup featuring the state’s top two teams in Class 4A, the Trojans held on for a 7-4 victory Saturday afternoon in front of 2,689 fans at Whataburger Field.
