  2. Nederland 15's 10 Bentonville 2 WP Ryan Brady Marcus Louvier went 3-4 and Sammy Sparrow had 2 hits. they will play Sunday at 5 pm, winner of West Texas and Oklahoma matchup.
  3. TERRIFIC 10TH: WB's Chip Ambres hits the game-winning RBIsingle in the 10th inning of the Mets' 5-4 win last sunday in Los Angeles.
  4. Jay Bruce : 2007 Major Leaguer? The 12th overall pick of the June 2005 draft out of West Brook high school, Jay Bruce has torn through the minors this season and has a legitimate chance at playing in the Reds outfield before the season is out. After just 67 games in High A this season, Bruce was aggressively promoted to AA Charlotte of the Southern League by the Reds organization. It was reasonable to expect Bruce to spend the rest of the season in AA and make a jump to AAA for the start of the 2008 season. Jay however, had other plans. In only 16 games, Bruce smacked out 12 extra base hits, 15 RBI and a .405 average. This prompted the Reds to send Bruce up yet again, allowing him to accomplish the somewhat rare feat of playing in three highest minor league levels in the same season. In 13 games in AAA Louisville, Bruce has a .644 slugging percentage, and 7 extra base hits. For the year he’s hitting a combined .319/.379/.604 between all three levels, with 35 doubles, 8 triples and 19 home runs in just over 400 plate appearances. Despite his size (6’2, 218), Jay has the ability to play all three outfield positions. The main area on concern, as with most young hitters, is his strikeout to walk ratio, which is currently sitting at 100 K vs 33 BB. This is something that will most likely work itself out as he matures, and is somewhat reasonable when considering the rare combination of average and power that Bruce posses at such a young age. If Bruce (born on April 3rd, 1987) does in-fact make his major league debut this season, he will be by far the youngest player for the 2007 NL season. That honor is currently held by fellow Reds prospect, Homer Bailey, who is close to a year older than Bruce. To really put this in perspective, Delmon Young made his highly publicized debut in the majors at 20 years, 11 months and 15 days of age. If Bruce debuts in the majors as late as the start of the 2008 season, he will be exactly 21 years of age. Young’s minor league total line is .317/.363/.517. for an .880 OPS. Bruce’s minor league line is .297/.361/.543 for .904 OPS.
  5. For what he has accomplished his soph and junior year, it must have been enough to convince UT that he can join their team.
  6. The 16 year old Mid County Babe Ruth All-Stars won the Southwest Regional Tournament in Vicksburg, Miss. by defeating Tri-County from Weimer, TX in the championship game. After going undefeated in early bracket play, the Mid-County team fell to Weimer, in the opening round of the championship, only to regroup and win the finale by the score of 5-1. The Stars earned a berth in the upcoming 2007 Babe Ruth World Series in Bentonville, Arkansas, starting August 11, which will feature eleven other teams representing their respective regions across the United States. Individual awards: Matt Johnson (LCM) - Tournament MVP and Chad Sims (Vidor) - Slugger Award. Pictured (Standing - L to R): Coach Mike Richard, Austin Sangster, Taylor Thompson, Josh Garza, Coach Jimmy Collins, Matt Johnson, Travis Weathersbee, Blake Snyder, Chad Sims, Trae Hester, Jordan Pitts, Jude Vidrine and Coach Ryan Brauninger. (Kneeling - L to R) Ryan Bearden, Taylor Eaves, Matt Woods, Jesse Griffin, Chaz Bruce, Cameron Collins, Conrad Roberts and an unknown bat boy (provided by a host family).
  7. No one respects the Stangs more than me, especially Coach Hooks and Coach Thompson. Nederland has had some success since Nuemann has arrived against the Stangs. Bulldogs respect the Stangs, but they don’t feel like their down 14 before the kick off. They expect to win it.
  8. LCM really impressed me last year. They have some athletes, but WOS still has talent and the mystique against the Bears. Stangs win this one.
  9. How about a 9-3 to end the inning, Stros up 1-0 bot 5.
  10. 13's are heading to Oklahoma and 15's to Arkansas this weekend for their regional.
  11. Biggio is HOF. A record Biggio has that may never be broken, along with a few more. 1. Most consecutive batters reaching base safely, an astounding 19, by the Dodgers in 1952. 2. Most hits let up in a 9-inning game, 36 by J. Wadsworth in 1894. 3. Most HR allowed by a winning pitcher, 6 by two guys in the 30s (EDIT--plus Tim Wakefield in 2004 as a few readers have pointed out). This could be breakable, but it is crazy to think that it could happen. 4. Fewest Double Plays hit into (in a season!! someone pointed out that I forgot this rather obvious qualifier): 0 by future (hopefully) Hall of Famer Craig Biggio. Can someone hit into negative double plays to break it?? 5. Most doubles in a game, 23 (!) by the Cards and Cubs in 1931. 6. Most inning pitched in one game, in one of the most famous games at least to baseball historians: Leon Cadore and Joe Oeschger, 26. Even fatigue couldn't stop them, the game was halted by rain. 7. Most hits allowed by one pitcher in any game: 29 by Eddie Rommel in 1932 (see a pattern here?) 8. Most runs let up by a pitcher in one game: 24 by Aloysius Travers for Ty Cobb's Tigers. That game has some special circumstances though. Travers pitched for the tigers even though he was just a fraternity kid; the Tigers all walked out because of a Ty Cobb suspension in one of his more noisome events of his career when he trampled a wheelchair bound fan almost to death. 9. Most Doubleheaders in a season, 44 by the White Sox. Maybe the old timers have a point about today's players being sissies. 10. Most Complete Games in a career: Cy Young of course with 751. This is more impressive to me than the 511.
  12. Usatoday sports page had these stats for baseball junkies. Babe Ruth outhomered every other American League team in 1920 Mark McGwire hit more HR’s than any other batter in 1997 but led neither league because he split the yr between NL and AL. Don Mattingly hit 6 grand slams in 1987, record for one season. He never hit another. Only 3 brothers homered off their brother; George Stovall off Jesse (1904), Rick Ferrell of Wes (1933) and Joe Niekro off Phil (1976)
  13. How many DC have taken their team to the playoffs 11 consecutive years ? One I know is Delbert Spell of Nederland, anyone else?
  14. DeLome starts fast Outfielder Collin DeLome, the Astros' fifth-round pick in June's draft out of Lamar University, is off to a nice start at the plate for short-season Tri-City. He was hitting .321 with two homers, seven doubles, four triples and 15 RBIs through 28 games. [Hidden Content]
