  1. Jasper is loosing some great seniors and will miss them, but the cupboard is not bare, they return 2 pitchers who just recorded W's at the State Tourney, P LF Justin Parsons JR., and P infielder Aaron Stephenson JR., They also return CF Taylor Heart Jr., DH Malcolm Bronson JR, (who I suspect will find a place in the outfield next year), 3rd baseman Parker Phillips FR, LF John Bradley JR, and a number of kids who got to run bases or just experience a trip to state. That’s 6 returning "starters" So watch out for the Dawgs again in 08.
  2. Alot of people saw nothing special, they didn't have any super stars, no ace pitcher, no one wth a division one scholorshp or drafted by MLB, just a team that was solid from top to bottom. Every player had mutiple hits at the state tourney, you cannot name one player out of their 10-11 starters who did not save them a game in their playoff run, by making a great defensive play or a crucial hit. It was truley a team effort. Thats what made them special they pulled together when they needed to and never gave up.
  3. Wylie outlasts Cooper for trip to state baseball tourney BY George Watson AVALANCHE-JOURNAL MIDLAND - The Cooper baseball team came up one pitcher short of a trip to the UIL state tournament. Forced to use all available pitching resources just to force a third game of its Region I-3A series, Cooper coach Terry Baxter had little else available once the Pirates got there. Second-ranked Abilene Wylie took advantage by forging an early lead and putting the game away with four runs late in an 8-3 series-clinching victory Friday. Cooper won the second game of the series, 9-5, earlier in the day. "I don't know that anybody outside of us expected us to be here," Baxter said. "We went toe to toe with the No. 2 team in the state for 20 innings and had one bad inning all weekend. We battled our way back into the third game, but in the seventh it just got away from us." The Pirates' season ends at 29-12. Cooper held the lead three times in the first game of the day but could hold none of them. Finally, after a four-run seventh inning put the Pirates up 9-5, Baxter went to junior Maxx Pope to close out the win, and he did just that. But it came with a price as his 22 pitches in that game took away from his effectiveness as the Game 3 starter. With Charlie Finch limited to infield duty due to an injured shoulder, Baxter turned to Pope, but he lasted just 31/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk with a strikeout. Baxter pulled Pope (6-2) with one out in the fourth and went to Thursday starter Taylor Snodgrass, who threw 122 pitches in a 3-1 loss. Snodgrass kept the game close and allowed the Pirates to pull to within 4-3 but they self-destructed in the seventh. Snodgrass hit the leadoff batter, threw late to second on a sacrifice bunt and wildly to first on another, then allowed a run-scoring single as Wylie pushed its lead to 6-3. Davis pushed another run across with a single, and a bunt by Landon Lindley finished the scoring for an 8-3 advantage. Wylie ace Cory Davis, who picked up the win on Thursday, finished off the series with a scoreless seventh. He came in with the bases loaded, two outs, and a 3-1 count and needed just one pitch to end the threat. He finished with 21/3 innings of scoreless relief to give starter Mason Macnoll (6-0) the victory. "Both teams had to bring back their starters from Game 1, and you know, Cooper did a great job all day battling and I think our kids did, too," Wylie coach Clay Martin said. "It showed a lot of character in the last game to get the job done. Cory, the situation in which he entered the game, he did a phenomenal job of getting us out of that inning, and then being able to close the game out." He also did a good job limiting a Cooper offense that racked up 17 hits off of three Wylie pitchers in the first game of the day. The Pirates continued to smoke the ball in the third game, but this time it was right at fielders, as several hard shots found their way into Wylie gloves instead of the outfield. "We were hitting the ball real well, we were just hitting it right at them," said senior David Cooper, who had a two-run single in the seventh of Game 2 that helped clinch the win, and then had a pair of doubles in Game 3. "We battled and battled and that's what we're always going to do, and we did that (Friday). Things just didn't fall our way." 4. Wylie advances second straight state tourney By Jacob Brown (Contact) Saturday, June 2, 2007 MIDLAND - For the first time in school history, the Wylie baseball team is state-bound for the second year in a row. After losing Game 2 of the best-of-three series against Lubbock Cooper 9-5 in the first contest of Friday afternoon's doubleheader at Citibank Ballpark, the Bulldogs defeated the Pirates 8-3 to become the Region I-3A champions. ''It's great to be returning to Austin with this group of kids, and I think they showed a lot of character today,'' Wylie coach Clay Martin said. ''It's tough anytime you lose Game 2 of a three-game series and to be able to keep it in perspective and bounce back. I think this shows how they've approached it all along, that we came to play a series and not one game.'' Leading 2-1 heading into the top of the fourth inning of Game 3, the Bulldogs added two more runs when Cory Davis hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Landon Lindley, who came across the plate two batters later on a Derek Saltzgaber single. But Cooper got one run back in the bottom of the frame and was looking for more in the fifth. With two outs and a man on second, Trey Parrish hit a grounder to Davis at third base, and his throw missed the mark to put runners on the corners for Ryan Hughes. He responded with a bloop single to shallow left that brought a run home and made the score 4-3. Pitcher Chance Bragg entered the game in relief of starter Mason Macnoll and walked the first batter he faced on four pitches to load the bases, then ran the count to 3-1 to the next before being pulled for Davis. The senior, who pitched a complete game to win the series opener the previous night, atoned for his error earlier in the inning by inducing a popup on his first pitch to end the threat and preserve the lead. He went on to finish the game and allowed only two hits in 2 1/3 innings. ''It was just an unbelievable performance,'' Martin said. ''It's a gutsy job to come back after throwing the game (Thursday), especially in the situation he had to come in to and get the job done.'' The Bulldogs scored four more runs in the top of the seventh for good measure, including RBI singles by Josh Hilliard and Davis, before Davis struck out the last two batters to put an exclamation point on the series. In the first game Friday, Wylie just ran out of comebacks. The Bulldogs erased deficits of 1-0, 4-1 and 5-4 but never took the lead and could not answer after the Pirates scored four runs in the top of the seventh. With the score tied at 5, one out and runners on first and second, Wylie catcher Martin Burleson attempted to pick off the man on first, but his throw missed the mark and allowed pinch runner Tim Salazar to score what proved to be the game-winning run. Cooper added insurance with an RBI double by second baseman Charlie Finch – who went 4-for-4 with a walk and three runs – and a two-run single with the bases loaded by David Cooper. The Pirates registered at least one hit in every inning, and all but one were singles. They strung together enough, though, to put nine runs across the plate. The Bulldogs got good offensive performances in Game 2 from Nathan Saltzgaber, who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, and Macnoll, who hit two RBI doubles and scored a run. Wylie still had enough left in the tank to win the deciding Game 3, and senior Nathan Saltzgaber said it was likely due to the team's playoff experience. ''We were relaxed, knew what we had to do, knew we had to play another game,'' he said. ''So we kind of shook the last game off and came out and played better.'' Next up for the Bulldogs is the state tournament at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, with the semifinals being played Wednesday and the championship game at 7 p.m. Thursday. ''We're pretty excited to go,'' said Nathan Saltzgaber, who was a member of the 2006 team that fell in the semifinals. ''We went there last year, and now we get to go back again. It's something that we've never done before. Hopefully experience will help out.'' • Lubbock Cooper 9, Wylie 5 Game 2 Lubb. 5. Their ace is Cory Davis Throws about 88-89, he's a Friend of the family thats all I know about them. Davis pitches Wylie closer to state By Jacob Brown (Contact) Friday, June 1, 2007 Photo by Ronald Erdrich Wylie’s Stephen Struve steps over Lubbock Cooper’s Kamron Bownds after tagging him out at second base Thursday during the seventh inning of the Region I-3A Finals in Midland. The win gives the Bulldogs a 1-0 edge in the best-of-three series. Cory Davis hadn't pitched in almost two weeks, but he certainly didn't show any signs of rust. STORY TOOLS E-mail story Comments iPod friendly Printer friendly More High School Sports Cooper's Stewart adds to record-setting legacy 2007 Big Country's Best: Vote for your choice Critical injury costs Eula The Wylie senior went the distance and allowed six hits while striking out five batters in his team's 3-1 victory Thursday night over Lubbock Cooper in Game 1 of the best-of-three Region I-3A baseball finals at Citibank Ballpark. ''It was a great game by both teams, obviously. Both teams made huge plays and got good pitching performances,'' Bulldogs coach Clay Martin said. ''I thought Cory did a great job on the mound, and we were just fortunate enough to score just enough runs to win.'' Davis, who had not pitched since leaving his start in the regional quarterfinals against Canyon with arm troubles, lived up to his ace status even though he felt he was not at his best early. ''At first it (my arm) was really tight, but as the game went on it finally loosened up and I finally decided to actually throw hard,'' Davis said. ''With the two-week break, trying to take it easy with the arm I've lost a little velocity, but I'll be OK. I've just got to get back up there.'' Davis got the job done on 86 pitches - 55 of which were strikes - and held the Pirates (27-11) to one hit over the first four innings as the second-ranked Bulldogs (32-2-1) took a 2-0 lead. ''To have Cory back on the mound was a big boost, and to see him throw so well, and one of the biggest things he did tonight was limit pitch count,'' Martin said. ''He was able to stay around the plate and keep his pitch numbers down low, and that was a big plus.'' As it has throughout the playoffs, the Wylie offense continued to get the job done with two outs. With Landon Lindley on third after lining a triple to right-center field, Derek Saltzgaber hit a grounder to short with two away and just beat the throw to first for an RBI single in the top of the third inning. Wylie struck again in the next frame when Josh Hilliard hit a two-out bloop single to center that popped in and out of the sliding defender's glove, scoring Michael Strong from first and giving the Bulldogs a two-run lead. Cooper answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth. With men on first and second, Charlie Finch grounded to the right side of the infield and beat Davis to the bag, and Bryan Oxford came around to score from second base. Davis got into more trouble when he walked the next batter to load the bases, but he got out of it when Ryan Hughes grounded out to second on the first pitch. The Pirates threatened again in the sixth as the first two batters reached safely on singles, but Hilliard came up with a big double play from third base and Davis induced the next batter to fly out. Wylie added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Greg Johnson hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Mason Macnoll, who went 3-for-4 from the plate with a double. Cooper sent the winning run to the batter's box with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and runners on first and second, but shortstop Michael Strong charged a grounder hit by Hughes and made a good play to throw him out at first and end a game in which the Bulldogs played error-free ball. ''Its very reassuring when you're a pitcher because even when you're not throwing your best and they're hitting the ball like they were today, defense helps a lot and gets you through,'' Davis said. Game 2 of the series is slated to begin at 2 p.m. today, also at Citibank Ballpark, with Game 3 coming 30 minutes after its conclusion should Cooper come out on top. In order to advance to next week's state tournament in Round Rock, the Bulldogs know they will need another performance like on Thursday, if not better. ''We knew going in it's a series. It's not about one game,'' Martin said. ''We've won and put ourselves in a good spot, but it's a series and you've got to win two.'' 6. Wlecome to Texas Get used to it!!! Until they hire head-baseball coach/ AD's this will continue, most programs under 4a cannot spend the money on an AD alone. so they hire head football/AD in indiana it is probably head basketball AD. From what I have hear he has done a good job but he is the Football coach. I am sure he will hire the best baseball coach he can find. Usually a good coach can coach anything!!!
  7. Well tonight I will have the police ready to arrest and hall those disrespectables off to jail for the night, where they deserve to be!!!! how dare they stand up and cheer behind home plate, and I'll have them arrest those Bridge City Cheer leader girls too they did some Big Red cheer that lasted into actuall game play. :-\ :-\ :-\
  8. Wow great pic. that kid also dida great job blocking all stephensons "junk" credit him for working so hard. and by junk I mean he had some great movement on his ball!!!
  9. You may be right I thought the guy ran smack dab into the glove trying to run him over, if thats the case he was out, Right call or not it swung the momentum. I thought the umps called a great game. I don't think i saw either coache even talk to an ump, that is rare.
  10. I didn't see!!! What did the Stringer kid do after the coach told him to put him on that was disrespectful????
  11. Man you sure are quick to throw your coach under the bus!!!! Most of the errors came after that play didn't they??? Looked like a great throw to me, he may have been shallow but it was right on the money all the catcher had to do was catch it and hold on!!!
  12. It seemed to me the momentum swung when jasper got that out at home (when their left fielder threw it on a rope and the catcher blocked the plate and held on to the ball) from then on BC looked like there heads were down and jasper caught fire.
  13. I believe it's up to the home team to decide what jerseys they wear, and then the visitors wear the opposite.
  14. All I know is Stringer is like clemens and Dishon is like Bonds so Jasper will get wipped on Thurs and Fri and go home cryin!!!!
