  1. Lots of aspects to coaching. A short list would be 1) Decision making(always subjective, but over time, you get a feel for whether the guy really knows baseball) 2) Player development(Do they take the time to work on players weaknesses, or just write them off) 3) Ability to interact with the kids(kids don't have to love the coach, but he must have some method of communication which makes the game fun for the kids or they won't play for him/her) 4) Ability to interact with umpires(yelling isn't always the answer) These are things I judge a coach on, you might have different criteria, such as wins v losses. Hard to argue with a winner.
  2. There are good and bad high school coaches. I just bugs me when someone says I should never criticize a coach. Why does everyone seem to assume that parents do not know anything about baseball, because we decided to do something for a living other than coaching. Likewise, some seem to think that all coaches must be good at what they do, or they wouldn't be coaching. Personally, I don't care if it's a select coach or high school coach. If they are good at what they do, they will get the respect they deserve. If not, well they don't get the respect they don't deserve. Why does respect seem to be waning? As parents, in this age of year round baseball, we have all seen lots of coaches and are probably better able to tell the good from the bad.-----JMHO

  5. 1. My high school won 46 straight district games over 4 years, including regional in 1978. There was no state tourney for 2A then. 2. My high school baseball coach was fired the next year because he couldn't get along with the head football coach. 3. My best memories are watching my kid play at West End Little League.(we did some select also, but I don't care for the travel). 4. I also pull for the Rangers(even though I haven't lived near Dallas for 25 years) 5. I hope the Aggies win the College World Series this year.
  6. These guys will be hunting without a license. Laws weren't meant for them.
  7. Pitiful. what was the fine, like $2.00 per duck?
  8. Who would you put them in front of? Statum and Barry for sure. Maybe Felts, because Hester is so much more versatile.
  9. Hester should be higher up IMO
  10. It can be done without lots of stars. Katy wins state with no major college signees. [Hidden Content]
  11. Some work harder and longer hours than others, just like any job. Those are the ones that are probably better at their jobs.
  12. You ask "shouldn't they form an opinion on his own?" That is the whole point of the post. He should. And he would do a better job if he went to watch them play. It's good that your coaches get out to see the younger kids play. i don't see that often, if ever, around here.
  13. Read the post, oldman. I said the coaches need to get out and watch the kids. Never did I say anything about listening to those who have watched them. If I were getting paid to coach, I certainly would want to see what was coming up.
  14. I think all high school coaches should get out and watch youth programs whenever possible. Most of us crazy parents have seen these kids play for many years. By the time high school arrives, most know who are the best players. This leads to the perception that the coach is an idiot, when he places kids out of position early in the season. A good coach will figure it out, eventyually(or develop the kid he has in there), but it takes time. The real frustration sets in when they never figure it out. I think most coaches get it right, in the end. But, if they would just pay a little more attention when the kids are 13-14, they would have a lot shallower learning curve. JMO
