1.
Who knows with them.   ::)  The SUPER hired a Committee of people to help out. There are 6 Finalists now. Get this, out of the 6 left for the job the Committee will vote and the 2 out of the 6 with the highest Votes will be the final 2, then the SUPER will hire out of those 2. Lovely A?  ::)
How would you have handle this process. Hell, the only way yall see this could have been done right is to ignore the rules and laws of the process and hire Coach T. That is just ridiculous and would have our behinds in plenty of hot water. I'm all for Coach T getting this job, however, there is a process that must be followed. Please let me know how you would have handled this process Coop since you think having a committee wasn't a good idea.

I'll say this about Erick Guillory, I think he is a snake that is in on this, but at least he been willing to interact with the public on the matter. However, the committee as a whole has failed to act with the "transparency" that was promised by Mr. Colbert.  Until that changes, they themselves are fostering the belief that this is not on the up and up.
There is a lot in your statement that I absolutely agree with. I think it would be nice to know who the candidates are also. It's times like this that I feel compelled to hold my tongue just because I'm running for the school board. However, that's not my style. Never has been, never will be. You having a RIGHT to know is absurd. Our only rights are found under the FOI act and no one is begrudging us that. That's like telling a cop he can't give you a ticket because you pay his salary. The public votes on the board, the board hires the Super, he recommends the AD then the board has to approve that decision. What you are wanting to do is micro-manage and that's never a good idea. Don't take what I'm saying as being on a different page as most of yall on here. I just think sometimes we think we are owed more than what we really are. We hire people to do a job. Let's let them do that job. If something is not on the up and up then there is a committee to stop it and if that doesn't happen then there is yet another line of defense and that is the school board that can also stop it. I understand the lack of confidence in the school board but if this thing goes in a different direction than we are all thinking, then there will be not only the Super, but the committee and the school board to hold accountable.
Place this post in bold letters and delete all the rest in this thread.
Well T, you and I usually agree on most things. Even now, I agree with everything you say. I don't feel like it's my "right" to know. However, when Colbert tells the media about this being a "transparent" process, then it turns out to be anything but that. It's going to give people cause for concern.
Let me play devils advocate. What if there is a candidate that has asked that his name not be revealed? Maybe this is the reason that the names aren't being released. I'm not saying that's the reason I'm asking you to think outside of the bo and not crucify the Super when there may be another reason. Personally I don't know. What I don't want to hapen is that in the end. Coach T does get this job and then you have put out a bunch of negative statements that are not built around facts and then you have to live with that. No apolgy will be acceptable at that point. I'm just asking that we give the process a chance. You can choose to believe the rumors and the whispers if you want to. At the end of the day all we can do is give our opinion to the board members and the committee members. Spewing negativity on a message board doesn't Add anything to this process and only does damage to our district. My only goal is to stop the negativity.
 3.
I have been quietly following this thread since I no longer live in Orange and don't have a dog in this fight, however I will say this.  I graduated from WO-S in 1984 when we were still a strong and proud 5A school.  I left Orange in 1989 and joined the service. I haven't lived there since but have always still followed closely the things happening at WO-S and the Orange area.  While I understand the need to accept applications and to interview others, the decision of who the next HC/AD should be should have been decided the day Coach Hooks announced his retirement even though it would have to remain a secret until hiring formalities had been completed. To me it doesn't matter who else applied, the one most deserving for the position is Coach Thompson.  He has been at the heart of Mustang athletics far to long to be passed over.  At one time I would have loved for my sons to have played football at WO-S had I stayed in Orange, but with the direction the school has taken the last 10-15 years I am not so sure about that.  One thing I am sure of however is that I agree with some of the other post that states this decision could effect the complete future of the district.  I could very well see WO-S being a 2A school in the next 3-5 years if the decision is a bad one.  I think most of us will agree that sadly many kids stay in school only to plays sports and successful sports programs will keep them around for that.  And as far as those not playing sports with the recent academic history of WO-S, its not easy to miss the fact a lot of parents would consider moving to other districts close by where a better quality education can be obtained.  Sorry if that last statement angers anyone, and its one I as a grad of WO-S hates to make, but academics there are not the same as when I was there. Sometimes and outsider can see things those involved within cannot.  It is what it is...
Academics are what you make of them. I'm also a product of WOS and an 84 graduate. All three of my kids go to school at WOS and they are getting a great education. I would put their grades and TAKS scores against anyones. Not saying they would be better just saying that they are comparable to kids at other schools. My wife and I make sure of it.
 4.
The Hiring is the 26th. They have 6 Candidates with Coach Thompson and Toby being 2 of them. Was unable to get the names of the final 4.
You may be right Coop but I thought it was the 25th.

That being said I can see how they make us all nervous about Coach T not getting the job. Johnny I'm not sure what the Super has done to allow things to get stirred up? As i understand it, when both Toby and Coach T applied for the job he then had to open it up. So that is what was done. There is no way he could have opened it up and then made a public statement that one of them would get the job. No way that is legal. Has to be some sort of discrimination. I'm not saying believe or don't believe what you hear. We all have to dig through all of the rumors and decide what to believe. Time is the only thing that will tell which rumors are true and which ones were just that, rumors. I, just as all of you have no say on who is hired as our next AD other than to make a phone call and voice my opinion on what I think should happen. That being said, please get out and vote. Early voting is held at the public library May 2-10. The election is held on May 14th.
Because it should have been done by now.
I don't think there is anyway to do it any faster while at the same time complying with all of the EOE laws. Who knows though. It just seems to be going really fast compared to alot of the others. Time will tell.

 10.
TD, the magazine was the Texas Coaches Association mag. not sure if you can buy it. Think its only sent to coaches. it might be somewhere on the Texas A&M website. I believe it was an entrance essay for the University.
I'm waiting on someone to email it to me now. If I get it before I leave for the Masters tomorrow I will post it here.

It may not mean anything, but if they wanted to give the job to Cornell or Toby, they could give it to either one and not even have to post the job. When you promote from within you don't have to post the opening. Just something to think about.
I'm not sure that's correct. As I understand it you can promote from within when only one person applies. When more than one applies then you have to post the opening.
I'm not saying I know this for a fact because I didn't look it up. However, I was told by AD and Super that this is the way it had to be done.

 14.
Mr. Colbert is a good man, I've seen his resume.  And one of the reasons that I will give him a bit longer before judging him is that he has a bit of work to do in undoing the work of not only his predecessor the but the superintendent before him. No doubt about that and things that he has said make me feel a bit better about the selection process for the next football coach.  But what was told to me still nags at me.  I will hope that the decision made shows that I need to find other sources for my information. As to Mr. Hill, I could not agree more.  He seems to be in tune with what needs to happen at WO-S.  His predecessor, however, was a CLASSIC example of what I was talking about.
It's going to take a little longer than a month or two to undo what has been done over the last 10 years or so. We are taking steps in the right direction and that is positive. I understand what you are saying about giving him time but let's just make sure we are looking ahead and not behind. That being said, it's important to remember the past so we don't repeat it but we have to continue to push forward.
 15. His article was also published in a magazine. I can't remember which one but will see if I can find out.
 16. I agree the Cardinals will be just fine. Not only this year but for years to come. The cupboard is full in BC.

I know a few board members that were happy to see Hooks retire and would like to shift the focus of WOS from "football" to "academics". I'm not saying I agree with their sentiment, but there are those that want to fill the power vacuum with someone they have more control over.
Well, focus on academic standards should always be the case.  Perhaps the change that needs to take place is that of the school board members themselves for when I attended West Orange-Stark, the school board and administration recognized that there was room for both.   The academic decay is not due to the fact that Dan Hooks was coach for over 30 years.  That decay due to this particular school board's, many of which have been on the board for a while, use of standards and criteria other than ability and excellence of its administrators.  That lead to choosing administrators which were inept while overlooking administrators who were capable of ensuring the students of WOCCISD an adequate education. I'll delay judgment on Mr. Colbert as he has just come aboard, but will note that he is the first superintendent at WOCCISD to not have a doctorate in education. So I guess given the above history, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Coach Thompson is not at the top of their list as ability and excellence is usually not a standard they use, anyway.
I'm not sure where you are getting your information but it is different from the info that I'm getting. As for the doctorate in education goes, it didn't get us anywhere with the last guy.
Grad you should go meet the guy. He is very personable and easy to talk to. We also have the right guy at the high school. Things are on the right track at WOS. It's a marathon and not a sprint but we appear to be headed in the right direction.

 20. I agree. He will be fine now that he can see. ;D
 21. Thanks I appreciate that. The people have an opportunity to speak volumes when they go to the polls. They are either happy with the way things are and will vote to keep the same people in or we can try something different.
