1.

One the reasons that the WO-S baseball program used to be the best was that Ronnie Anderson was there forever.  Once he left, a virtual revolving door of coaches (including Coach Thompson) left the baseball program in shambles to the point where it has seen success only recently with the revival under Coach Jesse Riojas.  Recall that Coach Thompson did have his opportunities as the head man (head football at Palestine and head baseball coach at West Orange-Stark) and from what I understand, found both experiences pretty bitter ones.
Ronnie Anderson's retirement was not the reason for WOS' declining baseball program.  If you recall, Jerry Nichols took over and later resigned after the 1994 season, due to health issues.  Basically, he was forced out because the team was loaded with talent and yet, they finished around 15-15 or 14-15, etc.  Lots of talent but too many selfish players.  Coach Thompson took over in 1995 and the Mustangs won their own Certa-Bearden Tournament, won district, and finished 24-5.  Brenham beat them in the area round of the playoffs.  John Patterson was terrific that year, but here's the most impressive stat of all: every senior that played on the 1995 team has earned a college degree.  One I'm not real sure of, but here's the list: McDonald, Sellars, Bates,Thompson, Shugart, Fuqa, Caillier, etc.  Forgive me if I've left someone out.   Coach Thompson was forced to resign in 1998, but the talent pool, in just three years, went from great to below average. What you stated about the "virtual revolving door of coaches...." leaving the baseball program in shambles is totally inaccurate and ridiculous.  Did Sam Moore and Stephen Westbrook "leave the baseball program in shambles?" No.
I get and understand what you are saying but I also understand what he was saying. When you have a revolving door of coaches it does kind of turn your program upside down. I don't remember how long each was here but lets look back just 12 years. Coach T, Sam, Westbrook, Rivers, Hallman/Roijas, Roijas. That's alot of coaches and doesn't lead to stability. Like I said I agree with both of you and I think you probably agree with each other it's just how you look at it. I think we had some good coaches but when they don't stay it hurts the program.
 2. All I can say is wow! OF hit everything we threw at them. If you missed they hit it. If you hit your spot they hit it. If you made a pitchers pitch they hit it. Not only did they hit it but they hit it hard. Very impressive offensive performance tonight by OF. Congrats on a well earned win.
 3. Congrats to the 10's and 14's. It was a good weekend.
 4.
Without question Gil Staulbaum of Barbers Hill. 400 plus wins is not chop liver.
I'm not familiar with the program at BH. How many times have they made the playoffs this decade? Sometimes 400+ wins can come from longevity. I'm not saying that's the case, I'm asking.
 5.
We finally get to see some playoff atmosphere 21 3A baseball this Friday. Welcome to the real world. The winner should definately move up along with Carthage. I still have to go with Hicks and Co. ( good pitching.......). Should be a good game and wish it was televised along with the next Nederland/ Vidor game.
I think we got to see some playoff atmosphere baseball when WOS played OF. I have seen both teams play and think it will be close. From the games I have seen it seems like BC hits a little better. Catching obviously goes to OF. Pitching goes to BC and a slight edge in over all defense to BC. I'm taking BC in a close one. This is just my opinion. This is a game I wish I could attend. Good luck to both teams.
 6.
sure seems to me like you can beat the mustangs if you can shut darnall down. tough job though. zock really put a damper on the whole mustang offense. he threw a great game.
I'm not so sure about that. HF shut him down and we beat them. Zoch did throw a good game. We didn't hit very good at all. One infield single and a Texas leaguer over the first basemans head.

That being said do you honestly think this was done to help kids or to keep a basketball coach? It would have helped the kids also if we would have been able to get them home safely at night!
Why arent they getting home safely?
Did I miss something?  Have kids not been getting home safely?
Not sure. I was just just talking in reference to not busing them home.
My guess is the people on here that are complaining and that are able to vote are doing just that, voting. Alot of the people complainging don't even live in the district and can't vote.

I don't think that the new position necessarily puts him next in line for AD. I could be wrong though.
Here is what I think going to happen---When Hooks retires Newton takes over AD job and the Athletic Academic Coordinator job gets eliminated.
BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 12. I agree they are a contender. What a great game played by both teams. There were a few errors but it was a hard fought game. HF has had to tough losses. Pitching was really good from both sides. Congratulations to the Mustangs on finding a way to win a close game. It's been many years since we have put people in the stands at our stadium. Thanks to the fans for coming out and supporting these boys.

 15. I really like what Coach Newton has done with the basketball program. However, after reading the article sounds like he is will be doing the job of a counselor. I'm not sure what the job description is of a counselor but it sounds to me like if you play sports you will now have your own counselor. That being said you still have to find your own way home at night after practice and games are played.  ;D
 16.
there is something wrong about this.why did the superintendent pass thompson up, i for one would like to here it from him.someone find out why ,this would be a good news story  hint hint orange leader but i think  dr collins would lie  why he picked newton
I will say this for him, every time I have wanted to know something I have driven to his office and sat down in front of him and had a conversation with him. Not one time has he refused to see me. I may or may not like what he had to say but he would listen to me and then have a conversation. I would suggest if you want to know something that you do the same and stop asking other people to do the work for you.

Yes, w.  I am a fan of Ronnie Anderson.  I imagine there are quite a few of those.  I am also a fan of stability.  That is how it has something to do with this.  Stable programs have done well as WO-S.  When those programs lost their stability, like the revolving door of baseball coaches that followed (including good coaches like Coach Thompson, Sam Moore, Steve Parkhurst and the like) that program had fallen on hard times. I would like to see some stability in the WO-S athletic program and I don't see that turning the program over to 61 year old will bring that.  If someone were to tell me that Coach Thompson was committed to carry on 8-10 years after Coach Hooks hung it up, I would happily reverse myself.  I just don't know that will happen.
When did Steve Parkhurst coach at WOS???? Isn't he an attorney??
LOL.  I think he means Westbrook.
I bet you are correct. Sorry I was really confused for a second.

 23.
Also, WOS grad, it's obvious that you are a fan of Coach Anderson and that's ok but the baseball program was not left in "shambles" by Coach T or his closest successors.  It's only been in about the last 6 years that the program has not been competitive.  (Not that the baseball situation has anything to do with the subject at hand.)
I wouldn't say Coach T left the baseball program in shambles but it has gone down hill since Coach Anderson left. Yes, I am a fan of Coach Anderson but also a big fan of Coach T.
 24.
have you seen the new  school thay built off MLK drive ,if bigger than the hight school.thompson has given his heart and soul to the kids at wo-s and he is a class person on and off the field. coach thompson is one of the best coaches in this great state of ours hands down .as for the school board most of them not all are a bunch of nuts that is what i told some of them last year on the busing deal and all i got was from them was a go to heck look
Isn't that what you would expect to get when you tell someone they are nuts???????????
 25.
Okay, before I start there are a couple of things:  I love what Cornel Thompson has done for the West Orange-Cove CISD and I believe he would be a wonderful AD if ever selected for the job and would be a good candidate for assistant AD.  That being said: 1.  Tabbing Coach Thompson as the heir to Coach Hooks at this point and time would be a foolish thing.  As both men are around the same age, I don't see Coach Thompson hanging around the coaching ranks much longer than Coach Hooks.  In fact, as I have said many times, my belief is that the two men will retire about the same time.  Even if they don't, Coach Thompson would probably be a one or two year replacement at most, rendering him basically a transitional coach and AD.  One of the reasons that programs at WO-S have done well is stability.  Three members of the football coaching staff (Hooks, Thompson and Mark Foreman) have been there since I was in junior high. Why would you have the keys turned over to a person who probably doesn't have teaching in his long range plans?  I am quite sure that this is what Dr. Collins had in mind when he tabbed Coach Newton as the assistant AD.  Coach Newton, a man who does have some roots in Orange who does have a commitment to the program long term. 2.  Why would we think that Coach Thompson would want the position?  Recall that Coach Thompson did have his opportunities as the head man (head football at Palestine and head baseball coach at West Orange-Stark) and from what I understand, found both experiences pretty bitter ones.  Not to say that Coach Thompson isn't ambitious, but these past experiences may have lent Coach Thompson to be content with the position he has right now! There are plenty of things to blame Dr. Collins for in his tenure as superintendent, but I don't think this is one of them.
If he is being paid as the rumors speak of and has been taken out of the classroom then he is to blame but not just him but the school board as well. Remember we didn't have money to bus kids and now we apparently have the money to pay 2 AD's and hire someone to do the job that Coach Newton was hired to do. Don't get me wrong I love what he has done with the basketball program and I think he has done nothing wrong at all. Dr. Collins can't do these things without board approval as I understand it.
