The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team returned to Region XIV competition Wednesday night in the Carl Parker Center with an 83-73 victory over the Jacksonville College Jaguars. This is the second win of 2010 for Lamar State, which opened the season with eight wins, then lost four straight going into the December holiday break. Six Seahawks scored in double figures, led by sophomore forward Kavon Rose with 18 points. Starting guard Von Jones hit for 16 points, Roman Vaughn had 12, while Ahyaro Phillips and Dion Waiters each added 11 and Keenan Coleman contributed 10 points. Daniel Skinner led Jacksonville with 18 points. The win moves Lamar State’s record to 10-4 overall and 2-3 mark in conference action. The Seahawks will be home again Saturday for a non-conference game against Baton Rouge Community College. The starting time for that game has been changed from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Several of the current Seahawks have the potential to move on to D-I schools. Sophomore power forward Ahyaro Phillips already has drawn interest from D-I coaches. Several were out to see him play in New Orleans on Dec. 12. That's not surprising because he already played a season at the University of Nevada-Reno before being released and transferring to Lamar State. Sophomore guard Kavon Rose also is recognized as D-I talent. He originally signed with Oregon, but asked for a release after the coach who recruited him was fired. Rose played his freshman season at Texas Christian University, where he appeared in 16 games for the Horned Frogs. Kentucky was interested in Keenan Coleman, and Von Jones was rated the top guard in Michigan during his senior year in high school. These four players and several others have the talent to play at the D-I level. It's a little early in the season to see what's in the future. However, Region XIV is considered to be the top junior college conference in the nation. So, if a player puts up good numbers, there is a reasonable chance that he could more on to D-I or another level of four-year school competition, where he can play basketball and complete a degree.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team returned to action at home Monday and started the new year with a 79-69 non-conference win over Delgado Community College. The win avenged the outcome of Lamar State’s last game, a 15-point loss to Delgado on Dec. 12 in New Orleans. It also stopped Lamar State’s four-game losing streak and moved the Seahawks’ season record to 8-5. Lamar State was missing two players tonight – freshman guard Nick Walters, who was out of action with pneumonia, and freshman forward and leading scorer Leviante Davis, who was dismissed from the team Monday morning by head coach Matt Cross for “disciplinary reasons.†Delgado moved out to a 13-point lead early in the game as the Seahawks did not look sharp coming back from the holiday break and did not score in the first three minitues of the contest. The Dolphins led through the six-minute mark of the first half, when the Seahawks were able to take the lead and hold on to a three-point edge, 33-30, at halftime. The second half belonged to the Seahawks, who led by as many as 15 points with nine minutes left in the contest. Four Seahawks scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Kavon Rose with a season-high 27 points. Freshman guards Von Jones and Keenan Coleman had 17 and 16 points, respectively. Freshman forward Roman Vaughn contributed 11 points. Lamar State returns to Region XIV play Jan. 6, when the Jacksonville College Jaguars come to Port Arthur for a 7 p.m. game in the Carl Parker Center.

Temple has been Lamar State's first games of the season for the past four years, and it has produced some lively competition. The rivalry began in 2006, when the Leopards went 55-5 and the Seahawks were one of only five teams to defeat them on their way to the NJCAA national championship tournament. LSC-PA head coach Vance Edwards said playing Temple, which competes in Region V, is a good way to open the season each year because that program is well established and always fields top-flight teams. The games give the Seahawk players an idea of how good the top teams in Region XIV will be. The Seahawks are 2-5 against the Leopards. This year's games are at 1 and 3 p.m. at Martin Field. We hope to see a big crowd to cheer on the Seahawks as they begin their 2010 campaign.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team is off until Jan. 4, after finishing the 2009 portion of their season with a record of 8-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action. The Seahawks were scheduled to play Dec. 5 at Lone Star College-Tomball on Dec. 5, but that game was canceled by LSC-T. Lamar State started the season with a school record eight straight wins, capped by a 67-65 home win over Lon Morris College, last year’s Region XIV regular season champion. But the Seahawks couldn’t extend that streak and now have dropped four straight games, including conference losses to Blinn College, Angelina College and San Jacinto College. Lamar State also lost a Dec. 7 non-conference game to Delgado Community College in New Orleans, closing out the 2009 part of the schedule. Head Coach Matt Cross said his team’s letdown came from exhaustion. “A major factor in some of our last losses was the team was mentally and physically drained,†Cross said. “Because of that, we weren’t able to establish any consistent depth in our line up.†Cross thinks the holiday break will help the team get ready for the rest of their season. “I think it will do all our freshman a world of good to get this two-week break from school and basketball, which will allow them a chance to rest up physically and mentally after coming off a three-month stretch of time demands like they have never experienced in their life,†Cross said. “I encouraged all of them to take some time to reflect on the transition they made from high school to college, learn from their experiences and come back re-energized and refreshed.†Lamar State College-PA reopens after the holidays on Monday, Jan. 4. That night, the Seahawks will be back in action at 7 p.m. in the Carl Parker Center for a non-conference rematch with Delgado Community College, which won the first meeting, 91-76, in New Orleans. Two nights later, the Seahawks return to conference action at home against Jacksonville College. Cross will start the year with one more player on his roster. “As we enter the heart of our season, we will add some much needed depth to our team with 6-4 freshman guard Dion Waiters, who has a defensive presence and intensity that really will help our basketball team,†Cross said. Seahawk Notes (through 12 games): * The Seahawks broke six team records, three individual season records and four individual single-game records. * Four players are averaging double figures. Freshman forward Leviante Davis leads the team with 18.5 ppg, followed by sophomore forward Kavon Rose (14.3), freshman forward Keenen Doyle (13.7) and sophomore post Ahyaro Phillips (12.8). The Lamar State College-Port Arthur women's softball program is in its infancy compared to some of the colleges the Seahawks face in both non-conference and Region XIV play. The Seahawks are going into their sixth regular season with a team that Coach Edwards describes as the most balanced team he's coached, and a team that has some of the best player chemistry he's led in the previous five years since the program saw its first competition in the spring of 2005. I'm looking forward to our first home games because I haven't seen this team play yet. There is a wealth of talent on the squad, and it will be interesting to see which players end up as team leaders and big contributors. Soar Seahawks!!!

Coach Edwards said he was very pleased with the turnout for the Seahawks softball team tryout day. Fourteen high school players showed up at Martin Field to go through skill drills, including several Edwards hopes to sign for the 2010-11 academic year. January 15 is the first day that junior colleges can officially sign players. Edwards said the college will be making scholarship offers soon.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team will finish the 2009 portion of their season Saturday with a 1 p.m. non-conference game at Lone Star College-Tomball. The Seahawks fell to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play this past weekend, when they lost 101-95 in overtime Saturday at Region XIV rival Blinn College in Brenham, followed by a 91-76 non-conference loss Monday at Delgado Community College in New Orleans. The freshman-laiden Seahawk squad began the 2009-10 season with a school-record 8-0 start, but followed that with four straight losses. Monday’s game at Delgado saw Lamar State fall behind 17-10 early in the first half, but battle back to take a one-point (30-29) halftime advantage, thanks in large part to a strong performance on both ends of the floor by New Orleans native Ahyaro Phillips. Phillips, playing in front of family members and friends, carried the Seahawks for the first 20 minutes with his hot shooting and strong defensive presence in the paint. He opened the night making four of his first five shot attempts, while blocking four Delgado shot attempts on the defensive end of the floor. Phillips finished the first half with a team-high 10 points, while also collecting five rebounds. Delgado opened the second half with a 13-2 run to take a 10-point lead. The Dolphins also hit three consecutive three-point baskets and converted two Lamar State turnovers into easy baskets to build their lead to 42-32 just three minutes into the half. The Seahawks cut the lead to seven points on several occasions, but a late 8-0 run by Delgado capped off by back-to-back three’s at the six-minute mark sent the visitors spiraling to their fourth straight defeat. Phillips concluded the night with a team-high 19 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks. The sophomore transfer from the University of Nevada-Reno did not disappoint his family and friends this night, or the two NCAA Division I coaches who were there to watch him play. Four other Seahawks finished in double-digits, led by sophomore forward Kavon Rose with 15 points. Keenan Doyle added 14, Leviante Davis hit for 13 and Von Jones contributed 11. Lamar State looks to end the four-game skid Saturday on the road at Lone Star College -Tomball in a rematch of a contest the Seahawks won in dominating fashion, 97-52, earlier this season.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team will try to get on the winning track Saturday, when they travel to Brenham for a 4 p.m. conference game against Blinn College. Lamar State’s season-opening eight-game win streak ended Nov. 24 at San Jacinto College, the No. 11-ranked junior college team in the nation. After that 19-point loss, the Seahawks had a week off, but came out flat Wednesday in Port Arthur and trailed by 14 points at halftime against Region XIV rival Angelina College. The Roadrunners extended that lead to 23 points midway through the second half. The Seahawks slowly worked their way back, tying the game at the four-minute mark and taking a three-point lead a minute later only to lose, 78-75, in the closing seconds of the game to drop to 8-2 overall and 1-2 in Region XIV action. Head coach Matt Cross was disappointed with his team’s performance. “I was surprised the way we played the first 25 minutes,†he said. “Yet even when we got down 23 points, I knew we still were in the game because of who we were playing.†Cross said his players showed a lot of fight to erase the big deficit and take the lead. “But after we took the lead, I was disappointed how we played the final two minutes by immediately allowing Angelina an offensive rebound, missing three lay-ups, two one-and-one free throws and turning the ball over,†he said. Cross said the team now should understand why Region 14 is the toughest junior college conference in the nation. “You have to be ready to play every time you hit the floor regardless of the conference opponent,†he said. “Losing a conference game at home really puts you behind the eight ball. The cardinal rule in conference play is you have to win two games on the road to make up for one home loss. We must keep all these things in perspective as we prepare for Blinn. If we do that, we can pick up our second conference win Saturday.†Blinn (6-4, 0-1) lost 87-83 in overtime Wednesday to Jacksonville College The Seahawks have two non-conference games left in 2009 – on the road at Delgado Community College in New Orleans (Dec. 7) and at Lone Star College-Tomball (Dec. 12). Lamar State returns to action at home Jan. 4 against Delgado, followed two days later with a home conference game with Jacksonville College.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team had a week off after losing by 19 points on the road last Tuesday to No. 11-ranked San Jacinto College. The young 8-1 Seahawks also took off the first half of tonight’s home conference game against Angelina College, as they stumbled with bad shot selection and feeble defense to trail the Roadrunners by 14 points, 45-31, at halftime. Angelina pulled to a 21 point lead by midway through the second half. But Lamar State slowly cut into the lead, tied the game at the four-minute mark and took the lead briefly a minute later. The Seahawks may have waited too long to wake up in this contest as the Roadrunners rallied in the final seconds to win, 78-75, and move their record to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Lamar State slips to 8-2 on the season and 1-2 in Region XIV action. Five Seahawks scored in double figures, led by freshman forward Leviante Davis with 13 points. Demetrius Ford, Kavon Rose, Ahyaro Phillips and Gordon Ball each had 12 points for Lamar State. Adrick McKinney led Angelina with 20 points, while Ron Stewart added 13 points and Takoby Jackson had 11. Lamar State has three games left in 2009, including a conference game at Blinn College in Brenham (Dec. 5). The Seahawks also will play non-conference contests at Delgado Community College in New Orleans (Dec. 7) and at Lone Star College-Tomball (Dec. 12) before taking off for the holidays. Lamar State returns to action to begin the year at home Jan. 4 against Delgado, followed two days later with a home conference game with Jacksonville College.

The Seahawks begin their 2010 schedule Feb. 4, when they host perennial powerhouse Temple College for a doubleheader at Martin Field. Edwards is looking for more players, especially pitchers and catchers, for the spring and for the 2010-11 academic year. He will hold a Dec. 12 open tryout day for high school juniors and seniors and students now enrolled at Lamar State or planning to attend the college. The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team has a week off after Wednesday’s 78-59 loss San Jacinto College. The young 8-1 Seahawks will take that time to prepare for their next Region XIV action, a 7 p.m. home game Wednesday against Angelina College. They also will think about their lost opportunity to win two straight games against nationally-ranked teams and extend their eight-game win streak that began the season. Wednesday in Pasadena, Lamar State tried to follow its Nov. 11 win over No. 25-ranked Lon Morris College with a victory against the No. 18-ranked San Jacinto College Ravens. The unbeaten Ravens, now 11-0, demonstrated why they moved up eight places in this week’s NJCAA national poll, as they won easily and handed the Seahawks their first loss of the year. Lamar State head coach Matt Cross said his team’s youth and experienced contributed to the loss. “We also got no productivity out of our two sophomore transfers,†Cross said. “On two occasions we had the opportunity to get over the hump and take San Jac to the wire. But we were unable to sustain any momentum.†Cross said San Jacinto is a team worthy of respect. “You have to give credit to San Jac for controlling the tempo of the game, playing to their strengths and being tough enough to protect their home court,†Cross said. “The Ravens showed why they are 18th in the nation.†Cross said his team had an excellent start, and will continue to work on improving every day because the most important games are yet to come. “A sign of a great team is the ability to bounce back after a defeat and the willingness to find ways to get better,†Cross said. “We will take a few days off for Thanksgiving and come back refreshed with a great opportunity to win our remaining games leading into our holiday break.†Lamar State has four games left in 2009, including conference games at home against Angelina (Dec. 2) and at Blinn College in Brenham (Dec. 5). The Seahawks also will play non-conference contests at Delgado Community College in New Orleans (Dec. 7) and at Lone Star College-Tomball (Dec. 12) before taking off for the holidays.
