The visiting Paris Junior College Dragons put on an offensive show Wednesday night in the Carl Parker Center at Lamar State College-Port Arthur, as they topped the Seahawks 86-72 in a Region XIV conference game Lamar State and Paris traded leads early in the game, but the Dragons led by nine, 46-37, at halftime with some nifty inside play and some strategic three-point shots. The Seahawks cut the lead several times, but Paris had the answer each time. The Lamar State College-Port Arthur women’s softball team kicks off the 2009 season Thursday with a home doubleheader against Temple College, beginning at 1 p.m. at Martin Field, 1000 Lakeshore Drive on the Lamar State campus. This will be the fourth season of Division I ball for the Seahawks softball program, which began in 2004 and competed as an independent for one season before joining Region XIV in 2005. Five veterans are back from the Seahawks’ 2007-08 squad – pitcher/third baseman Alison Heidbreder from Waltrip High School in Houston, pitcher Shauna Kelly from Nederland, outfielder Jerrica Stephenson from Vidor, outfielder Jessica Tapp from Anahuac, and shortstop Christina Jaques from Bridge City, an All-Region IV first-team selection this past spring and a pre-season NJCAA All-American third team pick this spring. Lamar State head coach Vance Edwards signed 12 freshmen to scholarships and had several walk-ons. After playing a short exhibition schedule in the fall, Edwards is ready to see how his team opens the regular season. “We are excited about getting started against Temple,†Edwards said. “Year after year, Temple is always one of the best teams in the nation. We look forward to competing against them. It will be a true test of all of our hard work. We are ready for competition and looking for success.†The Lamar State and Temple rivalry began in 2006, when the Leopards went 55-5 and the Seahawks were one of the five teams to defeat them on their way to the NJCAA national championship tournament. Temple ended the 2008 season with a 30-28 overall record to finish third in Region V. This year’s team includes two Nederland High School graduates, infielder Lindsay Matt and pitcher Caitlyn Austin. The Leopards opened their 2009 campaign this past weekend with back-to-back doubleheader sweeps over Howard College (12-0, 3-1) and Western Texas College (7-0, 10-2).

Christina Jaques of Bridge City, a sophomore shortstop/utility player for the Lamar State College-Port Arthur women’s softball team, has been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s pre-season All-American third team. Jaques set Lamar State season records in the 2008 season for runs, hits, triples, runs batted in, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, stolen bases and put-outs. She also earned All-Region XIV first team honors after leading the conference in batting average (.506) and triples (8), and coming in third in runs scored, fourth in stolen bases and on-base percentage and ninth in hits. Jaques ended the season ranked No. 23 in the nation in stolen bases and No. 27 in batting average, which led the National Fast-Pitch Coaches Association to select her to its All-Midwest Region first team and All-American third team. Lamar State head coach Vance Edwards is glad to have Jaques back for a second season. “I’m excited about this season. Our team is much improved, and Christina is one of our team leaders,†Edwards said. “I expect her to set more records and score more runs this year because we have some exciting freshman players who really can hit the ball who are behind her in the batting lineup.†Lamar State begins its 2009 campaign Thursday with a home doubleheader against Temple College, beginning at 1 p.m. at Martin Field, 1000 Lakeshore Drive on the LSC-PA campus.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team will try to get back in the win column Wednesday, when they return home to the Carl Parker Center for the first of two conference games during the college’s Homecoming Week. Paris Junior College will be the Seahawks’ opponent at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Lon Morris College will be in on Saturday for a 4 p.m. game. Lamar State descended to 7-13 overall and 1-10 in Region XIV action Saturday, after losing by 35 points, 81-46, at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens. Sophomore forward George Williamson from Vidor had 13 points as the Seahawks produced their lowest offensive effort of the season while extending their losing string to four games. Trinity Valley held Lamar State’s leading scorer Adrian Fontenot to four points, only the fourth time he has not been in double figures this year. Paris (15-5, 6-5) is coming off a 70-51 victory Saturday at home over Lee College. The Dragons won last year’s Region XIV tournament and finished eighth in NJCAA national championship tournament. Lamar State head coach Jerre Cole said his team is ready for the challenge posed by Paris. “This is the toughest stretch of our season, and while we have not shot the ball very well, we are playing very hard and getting better,†Cole said. “Paris is a very talented and deep basketball team. We will have to play very good basketball to be victorious.â€

I've recently had an interesting dialogue with a local sports fan regarding Lamar State's softball recruiting. As I explained to the person who messaged me, there are so many excellent softball players in this area, it has been hard for Coach Edwards to get out and see them all play. That should improve now as Edwards for the first time has a full-time assistant coach, Erin Lovelady, a Nederland HS graduate who was the very first person to join the new program in 2004. She also had the first hit and scored the first run for the new team, and was Lamar State's first all-conference player. Coach Edwards would like to know about high school student/athletes who are interested in playing for the Seahawks. We have an on-line recruiting form that helps the coaches connect with prospective players. Interested players can fill out and submit the Student-Athlete questionnaire on the Softball page of the Lamar State College-PA website: www.lamarpa.edu. They also can call Coach Edwards at 984-6293, or send e-mail to: [email protected].

The Tyler Junior College Apaches demonstrated why they are the No. 8 juco team in the nation Wednesday as they topped Lamar State College-Port Arthur, 89-69, in a Region XIV conference game at the Carl Parker Center in Port Arthur. The Apaches pulled away from the Seahawks with three-point baskets early in the first half and led by 13 points, 42-29 at halftime. Tyler controlled the ball early in the second stanza, pulling away to a 20-point margin. But the Seahawks came alive and cut the lead to six points at the 16-minute mark. But that just woke up the Apaches, who had four players in double figures - Byron Maxon (22), LaBree Sledge (18), Tyler Jefferson (14) and Alan Branch (11). Freshman forward Adrian Fontenot led the Seahawks with 22 points. Sophomore guard Jemel Douriso and sophomore forward George Williamson each had 14 points. Tyler moves to 18-2 overall and 9-2 in conference action. Lamar State drops to 7-12 and 1-9. The Seahawks will be on the road Saturday for 4 p.m. Region XIV games at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team returns to the Carl Parker Center in Port Arthur this Wednesday for a 7 p.m. conference game against Tyler Junior College, the No. 8-ranked two-year college team in the nation. Lamar State, competing in its first year of Division I action, continued to descend in Region XIV standings Saturday, dropping to 1-8 as they absorbed an 84-57 pounding at Bossier Parish Community College, the other first-year team in the conference. Freshman forward Adrian Fontenot led Lamar State with 30 points and 11 rebounds, his ninth double-double performance of the season. Freshman forward Jacoby Joseph added seven points and six rebounds. But there wasn’t much else in the way of offense, with the Seahawks shooting only 32 percent from the field, including missing all 14 of the three-point baskets they attempted. The Seahawks are 7-11 overall as they prepare to face North Zone leader Tyler (17-2, 8-2), which pulled out a hard-fought 76-71 win Saturday at Lee College. The Apaches’ only losses this season are to Lon Morris College and Navarro. The Seahawks are on the road Saturday for a 4 p.m. conference matchup at Trinity Valley College in Athens.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur women’s softball program has come a long way since the first team hit the field in the fall of 2004. Nearly 50 women have worn the Columbia blue and Navy blue colors of the Seahawks since then. This spring marks a special milestone for the program as Erin Lovelady, the very first Seahawk and the first to win all-conference honors, returns as an assistant coach. A four-year starter at Nederland High School, Lovelady was the 2003 District 20-4A offensive and defensive Player of the Year. She played at Hill College in Big Spring, Tx., during the 2003 fall semester, but returned home and enrolled at Lamar State College-PA in the spring of 2004. Lovelady heard about the Lamar State’s new softball program that spring. “Velma Wappler, who later became a Seahawks assistant coach, told me the college was starting a softball team and I should consider playing for them,†Lovelady said. “A couple of days later, I went to see Coach (Vance) Edwards, signed up and started looking for other players for the first-year team.†Lovelady, the starting catcher for the Seahawks’ first two years, recorded the new team’s first hit and scored the first run in an opening day 6-6 tie with Mississippi Valley State University. Lovelady earned a place on the All-Region XIV second team in 2006 after hitting .333 and finishing second in on-base percentage and fifth in triples. That same season, she set Seahawk team records for triples and RBIs that stood until the 2008 season. Lovelady earned an associate degree in kinesiology at Lamar State and went on to Lamar University, where she graduated this past May with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. During the 2008 fall semester, Lovelady coached the volleyball team at Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School in Beaumont. Head coach Edwards said Lovelady will be an asset to the softball program. “Erin was a contributor on offense and defense both years she played here. Her ability to work with the catchers and pitchers really will help us improve,†Edwards said. Lovelady is excited to be back at Lamar State College-Port Arthur. “My goal after I graduated here was to get my bachelors degree and then get involved in coaching with a college program. It was a dream of mine to coach for the Seahawks because I played here,†Lovelady said. The Seahawks kick off their 2009 season with a February 5 home doubleheader against Temple College.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team returns to the road Saturday for a 4 p.m. conference game at Bossier Parish Community College in Bossier City, La. The Seahawks slipped to 7-10 overall and 1-7 in Region XIV play Wednesday, when they lost 74-53 at home to conference rival Kilgore College. Lamar State’s offense never got on track in the contest, shooting an anemic 29 percent from the field. Freshman forward Adrian Fontenot led the Seahawks with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward George Williamson added 11 points. Bossier Parish and Lamar State both are in their first year in a Division I conference, so it’s not surprising that the Cavaliers (10-8, 0-8) are coming off four straight conference losses since the first of January, the most recent a 98-93 loss Wednesday at Lee College in Baytown. Lamar State head coach Jerre Cole expected a better performance from his squad after their first-ever Division I victory on the road this past Saturday, a 61-60 upset of Navarro College, one of the top teams in the conference. “We seem to play much better on the road. So, despite the letdown that occurred against Kilgore, we have reason to be optimistic about our chances Saturday,†Cole said. “Bossier Parish is a very athletic team that had a solid pre-season. But, like us, they are finding the first year in Region XIV pretty tough going. It should be a good game between two teams that are struggling.†The Seahawks will be back in the Carl Parker Center next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. conference matchup against the No. 9-ranked team in the nation, Tyler Junior College.

Lamar State College-Port Arthur freshman forward Adrian Fontenot has been named the Region XIV Player of the Week for Jan. 12-17. The 2008 graduate of Sterling High School in Baytown is Lamar State’s leading scorer and rebounder this season with 15.4 points and 8.57 rebounds per game. Fontenot, who ranked fifth in rebounding and 12th in scoring in Region XIV going into the week, recorded his best effort as a Seahawk with 29 points and 11 rebounds this past Wednesday at home in a losing effort against Lee College. He had 14 points and seven rebounds Saturday to lead Lamar State to its first-ever Division I conference win at Navarro College. Fontenot missed one game with an injury and was suspended for one game early in the season, but hit for double figures and was the team’s leading rebounder in 11 of the 14 games he played. Lamar State head coach Jerre Cole said this is the first time he nominated a player for conference honors in a week that included a loss. “In this case, however, Adrian’s play last week demanded at least some consideration,†Cole said. “His performances have been a reflection of a change in our team's mind-set. We are more concerned with our team’s successes, whereas before we still were holding on to personal goals. The guys recognized Adrian’s ability to help us win, and they are getting him more looks and he is delivering.â€

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team will look to improve their conference record Wednesday, when they face Kilgore College in a 7 p.m. home game in the Carl Parker Center. The Seahawks (7-9 overall, 1-6 Region XIV) got their first-ever victory as a Division I team this past Wednesday, when they posted a 61-60 road win over Navarro College, one of the top teams in the conference. The loss was the second straight for the Bulldogs (13-5, 5-2), who were undefeated in their first five Region XIV games. Lamar State freshman forward Adrian Fontenot led the Seahawks with 14 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Josh Washington added 10, while D.J. Stearns hit for nine points and Jason Williamson and Lincoln Charleston each added eight. Kilgore (7-12, 2-6) is coming off four straight conference losses, the last one Saturday at Lee College, 65-59. Lamar State head coach Jerre Cole was pleased with his team’s effort against Navarro and said they will take a similar approach against Kilgore. “Obviously, we hope the win at Navarro will help us build more confidence and allow us to play more complete games from here on out,†Cole said. “Kilgore has played about the same as us since the Christmas break by not finishing off games and losing some close contests. But they are a very defensive-minded team with a couple of guys who can seriously hurt you on the offensive end of the floor.†Lamar State returns to the road Saturday against Region XIV rival Bossier Parish Community College in Bossier City, La. The Seahawks will be back in the Carl Parker Center next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. conference matchup with Tyler Junior College.
