The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team closed out the 2010 part of their season Tuesday night with a 107-70 home non-conference win over University Park Academy, a prep school from Houston. The win gives the Seahawks a 13-2 record as the holiday break begins. Lamar State, playing without leading scorer Keenen Coleman who already went back to Michigan for the holidays, showed the effects of playing four games in five days. The Seahawks allowed University Park to stay close through most of the first half before pulling ahead to lead 45-26 at halftime. Lamar State dominated the second half, but still let the smaller Wolverines drive all the way to the basket on many occasions. Sophomore forward Roman Vaughn and freshman guard David Laury led the Seahawks with 20 points and 19 points, respectively. Four other Seahawks scored in double figures – Vonn Jones and Dion Waiters each had 12 points, while David Duncan and Dame Ka recorded 11 points apiece. After the holiday break, Lamar State has 15 games left in the season, all of which are conference games. The Seahawks start the new year on the road Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Angelina College in Lufkin. The Seahawks then return to the Carl Parker Center to host Blinn College at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team extended their current win streak to four games with an 87-65 non-conference victory over the Texas Southern University Basketball Club on Monday night in the Carl Parker Center. The Seahawks, now 12-2 on the season, came out a little flat in this game after posting 111-67 and 109-62 wins over Southern Sports Academy at home this past Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Lamar State led early in the contest, but allowed TSU to tie the game and take a one-point lead, 23-22, with 7:22 left in the first half. The Seahawks then went on a 28-3 run capped by a technical foul on a TSU player that led to freshman forward Dame Ka sinking two free throws for the T and two free throws for the foul to make the score 40-26. Lamar State led by 16 points, 49-33 at halftime, then dominated the second half to come away with the win. LSC-PA sophomore wing Keenen Coleman led all scorers with 23 points. Sophomore guard Vonn Jones hit for 16 points, while freshman guard David Laury had 11 and Ka added 10 points. Lamar State will be back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the Parker Center for the Seahawks’ final game of 2010, a non-conference match up with University Park Academy from Houston.

Seahawks head coach Matt Cross is using the non-conference games to install and work on some new defensive schemes the team will need when they come back in January to play the 14 remaining conference games leading to the Region XIV post-season tournament. Cross also sees it as a test of his team’s stamina and determination. “We’re playing four games in five days, and the Monday and Tuesday games will be against teams with fresh legs,†Cross said. “This should help us prepare for conference play in January, when there won’t be much time to rest between very tough and physical games.â€

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team will wrap up the fall semester with four non-conference home games beginning Friday at 6 p.m. against Southern Sports Academy from Jackson, MS. The Seahawks also will play Southern Sports Academy at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by 7 p.m. games Monday and Tuesday against the Texas Southern University Basketball Club and New Horizon Prep School. Lamar State is 9-2 overall and 2-2 in Region XIV action after defeating conference rival Lee College, 76-64, Wednesday night in Baytown. The loss drops the 5-7 Runnin’ Rebels into the South Zone cellar at 0-3. LSC-PA head coach Matt Cross was pleased with his team’s performance after two straight losses. “I was really proud of our guys to come back and win a road conference game in a convincing manner,†he said. “Since I came to Lamar State, we have not lost to Lee, and our guys just seem to like beating up on our I-10 rival.†Cross said the Seahawks seem to be adjusting to the pace of the season. “After starting 8-0, it’s been a like a whirlwind for our team,†he said. “We became nationally ranked, lost our first game, lost our first home game and then won our first road game. So, now we should be able to get back on a roll and have the understanding that at any time in this conference if you’re not constantly wanting to improve and preparing to win, then losses can start piling up real fast.†Cross will use the non-conference games to help his team focus on the beginning of January, when they embark on the 14 remaining conference games leading to the Region XIV post-season tournament, March 3-8 “We want to take full advantage of these four games and begin to install and work on some full court defenses will play to use as the season progresses,†he said. Lamar State returns to conference action right after the holiday break, traveling to Angelina College in Lufkin on Jan. 5.

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team will be looking to rebound from two straight conference losses Wednesday, when they travel to Baytown for a 7 p.m. game against Region XIV rival Lee College. After starting the season 8-0, Lamar State lost this past Wednesday at No. 5 San Jacinto College, followed by a loss at home Saturday to Jacksonville College, 81-74. The Seahawks are 1-2 in conference action going into Wednesday’s game at Lee. The Runnin’ Rebels (5-6, 0-2) also lost their second straight conference gameat home Saturday to South Zone leader San Jacinto College, 78-75. Lamar State head coach Matt Cross said the Lee game is a “must-win†for the Seahawks. “We need to win at Lee so we do not put ourselves in too deep of hole this early in the year,†Cross said. “Our team will be right there in the end of the season, regardless of the outcome Wednesday. But stealing a conference game here and there on the road sure would make things a lot easier.†Lamar State swept Lee last year, winning by 23 points at home and escaping from Baytown with an 86-80 overtime victory. “It’s tough to beat Lee in their gym,†Cross said. “We were fortunate to win the overtime game there last year.†The Seahawks will close out their December schedule with four non-conference home games, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday against the East Texas Flite. Lamar State will play at 11 a.m. Saturday against Southern Sports Academy, followed by a 7 p.m. games on Monday and Tuesday against the Texas Southern University Basketball Club and New Horizon Prep School. The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team will be home in the Carl Parker Center this Saturday for a 4 p.m. conference game against Jacksonville College. The Seahawks slipped to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in Region XIV play Wednesday, when they lost, 98-88, at No. 5 San Jacinto College in Pasadena. Lamar State went into that game minus freshman reserve guard Markens Charles, who broke his hand during Monday’s game with the Texas Riders. Charles, who was averaging 11.2 points per game, will be out for around six weeks. Wednesdays’ game was a disappointment for Lamar State head coach Matt Cross, who had just seen his Seahawks ranked nationally for the first time ever, coming in at No. 28 in this week’s NJCAA poll. “Our game with San Jac was played at a very high level. We had several opportunities to put the game away and come home with the win,†Cross said. “But they were able to capitalize on some very crucial turnovers and missed box-out assignments on us late in the second half, and that cost us the game.†San Jacinto, which was picked to win the Region XIV South Zone, now is 12-0 overall and 2-0 in conference action. Jacksonville also is having an impressive season start, going 10-2 overall with two conference wins. Cross expects a tough game against the Jaguars, who are coming off a 91-81 home win over Blinn College. “We have to be ready for Jacksonville,†Cross said. “They play a unique style of basketball unlike anything we have faced this year. They press and trap the entire game. So, we need to make better decisions with the ball if we want to have a chance to win Saturday. Lamar State returns to the road next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. conference game at Lee College in Baytown.

It won't get that much easier for the Seahawks on Saturday. Jacksonville is 10-2 overall and 2-0 in Region XIV play. The Jaguars' wins include then-No. 5 Midland College. They play a very up-tempo game and opened conference action on the road crushing Angelina College, 127-95. They scored move 100 points in six games and most were over 120 points. They demolished the Wiley College JV squad, 150-65. The Seahawks also beat WCJV, but the score was a lot closer, 106-58.

I hate to admit that you were right....but you were right. The Seahawks defense has been their Achillies heel so far this season. It has allowed teams to stay in games and have a chance to win at the end. Lamar State led by five points at half-time at San Jac, but allowed the Ravens to control the second half and win the game. The defense will have to improve or there will be more nights like this.

I did get one bit of bad news today. The Seahawks go against San Jacinto tonight without the services of freshman guard Markens Charles, who suffered a broken hand in the Texas Riders game. Charles had been averaging 11.8 points per game in a reserve role, and has been the best free throw shooter on the team, hitting on 43 of 55 attempts for 78 percent accuracy. He has been to the charity stripe more often than another other Seahawk. Charles will be out around six weeks with the injury.

I wouldn't predict a winner in this game. Of couse I would like to see the Seahawks prevail. But I know that just about any team in Region XIV can beat another conference team on any given night. The conference battle is not a sprint; it's a marathon of highly competitive games often decided by less that 10 points. But I would like to know what you based your prediction on. I doubt you have seen either team play. Even though San Jacinto is 11-0, a comparison of the Ravens' wins and the Seahawks' wins shows Lamar State playing a tougher schedule so far, including victories over highly-rated Lon Morris, pre-season No. 21 Shelton State and two other established D-I teams -- Delgado Community College, the 2010 Miss-Lou Conference champion, and Lawson State Community College. San Jac has four wins over Lone Star College System schools, which compete in a recreational league. The Ravens also have two wins against Coastal Bend College, which is an third-year independent, and one win over Victoria College, a second-year independent. They also beat the Stephen F. Austin State University basketball club, another recreational league team. So, that leaves only three wins over D-I teams -- Temple College, Collin County Community College and a squeaker overtime win at Blinn College. I think its safer to wait until the final buzzer Wednesday to see how the Lamar State - San Jacinto game goes.

Second-year head coach Matt Cross has many goals for his Lamar State College-Port Arthur basketball team. One of those goals was reached today, when the Seahawks earned a national ranking for the first time ever, coming in at No. 28 in this week’s NJCAA weekly poll. Another of Cross’ goals is to see his team set a new record for wins to open a season, surpassing the mark they made last year in Cross’ first year at the helm. Lamar State, one of only five undefeated junior college teams in Texas this season, tied the 8-0 starting record Monday night in the Carl Parker Center with a 98-74 win over the Texas Riders from Tyler. The Seahawks can break the record Wednesday night in a conference matchup at San Jacinto College in Pasadena. But it won’t be easy. The Ravens, who were picked to win the Region XIV South Zone, have an 11-0 record this year and are ranked No. 5. Lamar State and San Jacinto both are 1-0 in conference play. The Seahawks defeated Lon Morris, 94-83, on Nov. 23 in Port Arthur. The Ravens won in overtime at Blinn College, 79-71. “Last year, we had the exact same start and record heading into the San Jac game. So, this is deja vu all over again,†Cross said, noting that last year’s trip to Pasadena resulted in the first of four straight losses. “We ended the fall semester at 1-3 in the conference, digging ourselves into a major hole.†This year’s team has more maturity, which should help, Cross said. “Last year’s team was not able to handle the early success. That certainly weighs on my mind, and it should be in the minds all of our returning players,†Cross said. “We are heading into our toughest three-game stretch of the season. The table is set of us to put ourselves in a great position in the conference race heading into the holidays.†Lamar State has one advantage this year over San Jacinto. The Seahawks have played more games against strong teams, including wins over pre-season No. 21 Shelton State Community College and highly-rated Lon Morris College. Six of the Ravens’ wins were against recreational league college teams and one independent school. Lamar State also has multiple offensive threats, including sophomore guard Keenen Coleman (21.6 points per game) and freshman forward David Laury (19.5 ppg), who lead Region XIV in scoring average. Three other Seahawks are averaging in double figures – Roman Vaughn (11.6), Markens Charles (11.2) and Vonn Jones (10.7). Laury also is the top rebounder in the conference with 13.8 per game and the No. 5 shot blocker. Sophomore center Gordon Ball is contributing 9.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Dion Waiters is second in steals. Jones is fourth in assists. San Jacinto’s ranking doesn’t worry Cross. “Our sophomore class has had amazing success against ranked opponents,†Cross said. “Last year, we lost only once to a nationally-ranked team, and we beat No. 8 Navarro, No. 13 San Jacinto and No. 25 Lon Morris. This year, we defeated pre-season No. 21 Shelton State.†Cross said the San Jacinto game is a pivotal contest in the South Zone. “We know this is the biggest game in our school’s history, and we know the implications this game can have on our season,†Cross said. “There is no doubt in my mind that our team will be ready to go Wednesday night.†Lamar State will be home Saturday for a 4 p.m. conference game against Jacksonville College, which currently is 9-2, including a win over No. 1 Midland College.

Monday night’s game is an important tune-up for Lamar State, which then has just one day to practice before going on the road Wednesday for a pivotal conference game against No. 5-ranked San Jacinto College in Pasadena. The Ravens are 10-0 overall and 1-0 in Region XIV play after defeating Blinn College in overtime Monday night, 79-71.

I haven't heard anything about interest from D-I schools yet. But if the Seahawks continue to play the way they are now, that should change. I expect a lot of interest to develop as the season progesses. Five Seahawks were ranked nationally going into last night's game against Lon Morris. Sophomore guard Keenen Coleman was No. 7 in the nation in scoring with 25.5 point per game. Freshman forward David Laury was No. 3 in rebounding average, No. 11 in blocked shots and No. 21 in scoring. Sophomore guard Dion Waters was No. 15 in steals. Sophomore guard Vonn Jones was No. 26 in assists. Sophomore center Gordon Ball was No. 36 in rebounding. The Seahawks were 14th in the nation in scoring average with 96.6 points per game.
