They have some good kids coming back and some good kids coming up. Thank the Lord we wont be running that crazy defense again this year! Hope he comes in and evaluates all talent and puts every kid where they best fit his scheme, not necessarily where they played in the past. I like this hire.
I agree.  This is probably a better hire than even Bowman would have been.  Get 'em young while they still have energy and ambition.  And hope they stay awhile........  Welcome Coach Morgan!!!  That is even a good Jasper name!
 2.
Can someone explain to me why a 29 year old coordinator who has never been a head coach has been hired over succesful guys like Alvarez and Valastro? Not criticizing... yet. Just would like to know the reasoning behind this. Kudos to the Jasper admin for going after a guy like Bowman! Even though the swung and missed I like that they tried to bring in a championship winning coach.
my guess is that they think he will prove to be better than the others.  maybe they liked the chemistry better.  Walkoviak was only 28 years old when they hired him and he immediately brought consistent credibility to Jasper football.  I would suggest that he was the best hire they EVER made.  In the past 60 or so years I don't think anyone else came even close to staying at Jasper 20 years.  Nor maintained his winning percentage over any appreciable time.  Here's hoping that Morgan does as well.
 3.
I still dont like and dont agree with the way this was handled by Jasper Admin.  I'm not sure what happened but they normally do a better job than this.
I think it has gone MUCH better than last time.  They seemed to stall and stall and stall.  If the hire happens on Friday, then this may be some kind of Jasper record for least time spent hiring.  :) Apparently Bowman let the Jasper offer news out to serve his own interests.  Can't blame Jasper for that.  Jasper should have yanked the offer at that time on principle.
 4.

Those interviewed were: Bowman- Daingerfield Alvarez- Kirbyville Barbay- Anahuac Morgan- Carthage Stowers- (Formerly Central) Valastro- East Chambers Reportedly Valastro was given much consideration, but the decision was made to go with Morgan
yea once Bowma used them!!!!
In fairness to Bowman, I think we should wait to see if he goes to a different school.  Supposedly Paris has an offer that he must accept or reject by mid-night.  He can only accept one job and you cannot blame a guy for increasing his odds.  But if he stays at DF, then yes he was a definite user!
 5.
Hope this is true. Carthage has had quality/championship football and baseball in the same years and decade. Someone is doing something right up there in Carthage and it shows.
ditto.  maybe he will know how to beat them!  ;D
 6.
Bowman is also the lead dog in the Fredricksburg and Paris HC positions. I think it is a power play to get more money out of Daingerfield.
or one of the other two schools.  guess he could not take all the jobs offered.
 7.
I think Huntington will get this one.  But, I have been wrong before,  I thought they should have beat Center and especially Diboll the other night.  But, I think it being at Huntington will give them the little over the top to get the win.
not to even mention the gestapo!  ;D
 8. This will be a very tough game for Jasper.  I have no prediction.
 9.
My son said that coach Alvarez never left the school during the day and he also said that coach Alvarez has shown no signs of leaving
may have been a phone interview...  ;D
 10.
The Morgan that was the QB was the old Hardin AD Mike Morgan son.
Thanks!
 11. I doubt you will see an "official" list before the apply deadline.  That would not be fair to late applicants.  It probably would not even be legal.  And I hope the administration keeps an open mind until the deadline passes.  A super (even more super than any that have already applied) applicant might apply at the last minute.
 12.
They beat them that bad, it must have been at Hudson.
yes, the game was at Hudson.  never count Hudson out.
 13.
Final was 43-36. sloppy game.........Hudson beat Jasper by two....57-55 I think.............
dang on both counts!  >:(
 14.
Is this the only area in Texas where 5A schools routinely play 3A schools?  That was unheard of back in the day; maybe playing one level down, but never two.  The 5A schools have everything to lose and nothing to gain as they are expected to win those games every time.  I just don't understand why a 5A coach would even consider playing 3A teams.
they would play for the competition.  long ago in "the day" (early 60's), in the old system where 4a was the top bracket, 4a Houston teams used to drive to Pineland to play 1a West Sabine.  Those teams also regularly went home with whippings in the neighborhood of 30 or so points.  One year, West Sabine actually played Panola Jr College for their after district warm-up game.  WS beat them by two or so points as I recall. So yeah, all those teams must have figured there was something in it for them.  Competition better than they got in their own class.
 15.
I agree with you J Dog. When you've got it, you've got. Age doesn't matter. There is a reason they are hiring 31 year old Head Coaches in the NFL! P.S. LloydChristmas, How many "RINGS" does your dog in this hunt have? ;D
This is NOT aimed at anyone in particular.  I do not know the applicants.  But native intelligence does not change.  You can get more experience, and that will help.  But there is a certain snap that any leader needs.  It is like speed.  You cannot teach speed.  You either have it, or you don't.  And that is why you often have younger coaches beating those with much more experience.
 16.
The guy is 29 years old.  I'm not sure if it matters to all, but it would matter to me.  What do yall think?  Not saying he isn't the best guy for the job, but i would find it hard to believe even if he has 3 state championships that he had all the knowledge it take to be succesful.

Carthage DC  is the man for the job.
Absolutely. If Morgan wants the job, we need to hire him. 3 straight State Championships. He has followed Bickham before so he knows what he is getting into. And from everything I have heard he is a great motivator whose defenses have gotten better as the year went on. This is the guy we need to hire.

Walkoviak came to Jasper at age 28 and you know how that worked out.  The other guys may have longer track records, but Jasper has been chasing experience for the past several hires and we also know how that has worked out. I say hire the best man, regardless of the length of resume.  Whoever that might be.
 17.
Center plays at Huntington.  This would be a great chance for Huntington to start district off in a real good way by beating Center.   I will try to get the score for later. I know, I know, it is East Texas, but for those who are interested I will post.
Thank you!  and if you pick up the Hudson/Jasper score that would be appreciated!  :)
 18.

Carthage DC  is the man for the job.
isn't the Carthage qb named Morgan?  same family? sounds good to me.  one state championship could be a benefit of talented players.  three with changes in players means he probably is the real deal.
 19.
all this talk about what jasper needs - defense, discipline, position changes,e tc.  what they need is consistency in the head coach position.  a number of the sub-varsity coaches have been there for quite some time, but there has been a revolving door at the top spot.  all the people whose names have been mentioned could do a good job, but a couple of them would be part of the revolving door issue.  bottom line we will all know in a few days - i would bet it is decided almost immediately after the closing date. lets hope it is the right guy.
and hope that his system and approach meshes with the holdover coaches all the way from junior high through varsity and vice versa.  it may take a really strong personality to get everyone on the same page.  everyone must get on the same page to re-establish the program.  I agree with ctowndawgfan.  Jasper can be just one good coach away from greatness.  this time, for sure hope they make the right pick!
 20. Track is where Jasper has rung up state championships.  1975, 1985, 1991, and 1997.  Had several other top four finishes.  As someone mentioned, Coach Spoon died, and apparently the track program died with him.
 21.
I know they won in 2007. Not sure of other wins, but they have been to the state tournament several times.
2007 is the only championship.  Won both games by huge margins.  I think they have been to the state tournament seven times.  Made it again last year.
 22.
The common thread amongst most of the candidates seems to be that most have former connections to the Jasper program.
am I missing something here?  what do you call connections?  Alvarez was at Jasper.  Were any of the others ever employed at Jasper? Question.  Curious.  Alvarez was at Jasper during the Walkoviak years and clearly has gone on to solid success.  Are there others that also have done well elsewhere?  If so, I have not heard of it.  But there probably are some.  Just do not know who they are.....
 23. Actually, that would just mean that everyone in the area would just have to work harder and raise their competitive level.  Might actually turn out to be a good thing.
 24. pass a law to keep them in 4a regardless of enrollment.  ;D the one time i saw them, they could have beaten most junior college teams!  :o
