It seems Carthage is hard to score on! -
Jasper needs this game to stay in good position in the playoff hunt. Jasper is beginning to hit better. Jasper wins 4-1 reversing the 1-2 loss the first time around in district.

Congrats WOS. You guys can run!

Jasper's HC Vacancy..Will Hire Tonight!!!!!!!

He coached a year or two in Coldspring before he came to Jasper, I think... He came directly to Jasper from A&I. After Jasper he went to Rockport-Fulton for a couple years, then to Coldspring, then to Newton where he now has been for several years. I don't remember that he was at Coldspring BEFORE he went to Jasper. -

Well I tell you it does get tiresome if you are continually used only as a stepping stone. In my memory, and that goes back a bit, every coach except Walkoviak (and Lauve to a lesser extent) left as soon as they had a deep run in the playoffs. Lauve left only after things turned sour and perhaps that was the best move for him and the school. But the others were simply opportunistic in my opinion. But that just makes me respect the Walkoviaks and Barbays even more. It can just simply be smart to stay put. Now that may be okay with some people for a coach to use your school simply as a stepping stone. But it is also okay for us to wish for something better. If I were doing the hiring, I would certainly do my very best to try to avoid the stone steppers. But regardless who they bring in, I will support them and hope for the best. By the way, I think Walkoviak had only one or two years at the high school level, I think maybe it was at Mathis, then he went back to Texas A&I as a graduate assistant and got his masters. He was only 28 when he came to Jasper as HC so he had not done a lot of jumping around. -

that has always been important to me We need a coach that's going to be in jasper for more than two years. Need a GOOD coach that's going to be in jasper for more than two years. Twenty at least. That is how you build a program. It is the smart man that knows when to stay put. Some stay put and have a good career. Others chase the "big job" and eventually do not do well. The coach before Barbay at Newton won state in the seventies, and immediately moved on to "greener" pastures, then again, then again, ......... In the meantime, Barbay has stayed put and built a dynasty. It can pay to stay put. No doubt about it. That is the kind of coach Jasper needs. A good coach who will appreciate the talent Jasper offers, and stay and cultivate that talent. -

3abaseball.com rankings (March 23)
j_dog replied to Bobcatfan4life's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
LOL. Right. OK. Now, how would you like this state 3A poll? 1. Bridge City 2. Carthage 3. Orangefield 4. Lufkin Hudson 5. Jasper 6. Hamshire-Fannett 7. Diboll 8. Hardin-Jefferson 9. Cuero 10. Spring Hill ;D Now that is more realistic! I said you were a smart guy! ;D -
For that much money, he DID make the right decision to go to K. Now he can rest for the rest of his life.

Here is the latest THSBCA poll [ftp=ftp://[Hidden Content]] Halletsville ranked #1; White Oak who beat Spring Hill ranked #5; Not sure what your point is, though. I assume you think I am not giving 21-3A enough credit? no, i think you are not giving 18-3a enough credit. ;D -

It seemed to have worked. How long is Tyler to be out? Hes out for the season. darn! > That could be costly for the Dogs. Then again, in 2007 Jasper had a player go down for the season, and ended up winning state in a record breaking fashion. Tyler, take care of yourself and get well. Dogs, kick it up one more gear and go! Cleatiux (just butchered the name im sure) was good, but I think Ernest was more of an anchor to this team, making his injury a little more costly for the team. Jasper can still def. make playoffs though, just got to have the other older guys step up. I think they will do their job. The Jasper tradition is a valuable intangible. -

Gwood is a good man. He knows what 21-3a is capable of. I met him at state in 07 when Jasper went to the tournament as the number four seed. He told me that Abilene Wylie had three tough pitchers. He was right, but Jasper won 11-3. Then he told me that it was going to be tough in the next game, that LE was the defending state champion. He was right, but Jasper won 14-4. I say, don't worry about his rankings. He does the best he can with very limited resources. Even if you do not agree with his rankings, he still does 3a baseball a great service by accumulating probably the best data base in the state. But I doubt he will ever forget what a team from 21-3a is capable of. -

A young guy like the last coach who came and stayed for twenty years, won around 80 percent of his games, and took his teams deep into the playoffs several times in spite of being a small 4a team playing big 4a teams as well as 5a teams. -

Jasper wins 10-1 Pick up first district win, now 1-2 in district. Parker Phillips was the winning pitcher for Jasper. -
So that means that Silsbee could be one of the only school in SETX who has ever had a #1 national ranking in a athletic sport....... Does setting a national record in the 400m relay count for anything (even if not from Silsbee)? Jasper was the first high school team to run under 40 seconds at 39.9 hand-held and was the record holder from 1991 to 1997 when a Dallas team ran faster. So they were not just the best that year. They were the best ever from inception of high school track until 1997. Silsbee also had a guy who ran track that set a national record but I forgot what event it was and his name but AAW should know...........I think he also ran in the Olympics......... Was it Tony Allen? Tony Allen was from Jasper. Helped Jasper win state in track in 1985. Came darned near a national record that night in the 400m. That race was a delight to watch. It was two races actually. It was Tony about 30 meters ahead, then everyone else. He is now track coach at Jasper.
