I'm working at a hospital out here in Central TX, near Austin. I'm taking care of an elderly lady and she's talking to me about a high school baseball game she recently attended. I'm wondering why a lady of her age, in her condition was recently at a high school baseball game. Anyways, she tells me that during the baseball game she keeps hearing this "zinging noise" and can't figure out where the noise is coming from. Says she's never heard a noise like that before during a baseball game. Her husband too cannot figure out where the zinging is coming from. According to the lady, the "zinging noise" goes on and on so the nice, elderly lady finally turns around and asks someone in the stands, "Do you hear that? What's that zinging I'm hearing?" The person in the stands tells the lady, "That's the pitcher pitching the ball". Turns out the lady is a relative of Coldspring's coach, attends their games fairly regularly, and that's Matt Hicks on the mound making the "zinging noise".

Watched Carthage beat Giddings in the championship game last year. Giddings comes back with an experienced, but essentially same line-up this year. They do have a hard-throwing ace. Giddings' offense goes where the lead-off hitter takes them. Would think Giddings would have to be feeling some pressure to win this thing after the disappointment last year?... Jasper should be relaxed, patient, confident, and ready after getting through the region. If Sowell is on, and I think he will be, I like Jasper's chances.

Jasper vs Bridge City (2 out of 3 set) Predictions

Coming from a Jasper perspective, it was always sort of intimidating going down to the "Big City" of Beaumont and playing those Golden Triangle teams. Of course, we always played like an outsider with something to prove and everyone was against us... I still have terrible nightmares about playing Nederland in summer league all-stars. They always got the best of us... Seems like the talent gap between Jasper/East Texas schools and some of the Golden Triangle teams has closed somewhat. Of course, the Lakes Area will never (never say never) produce the really big schools like you have down there.... In reference to the 3A vs 4A years, and being competitive etc.... We were competitive in 4A, but maybe not as consistent as some of the other Beaumont teams. 1989, my senior year, we did sweep PNG in the second round of the playoffs. Sad to say but I can't recall if BC was in our district or not. We did win their tournament though.... We always respected and admired Coach Young. Excuse the rambling please... I will be pulling for Jasper of course. Hate to see Jasper or BC get knocked out. Wish they could both make the state tournament and settle it there.... If Alvis is really out for Jasper, they will miss him tremendously. Could be a difference maker.... -
Not sure you can get too much info about Jasper if you just watched them the past 3 games? Last nights game for instance, Sowell is "out of control", strikes out 7 in 2 1/3 innings and gets pulled (think that's right?). What you may have seen was: #1)Jasper has some depth #2) Coach Mixon taking advantage of Hudson giving him an early 5 run lead and letting the bats take care of business. With that said, Jasper will need to play better..... Look forward to seeing who comes out of Region 3.

How about Coach of the Decade....

You guys can't imagine how proud us former Jasper baseball players are of Coach Mixon and the job he has done. For him to get this sort of recognition in this sort of forum/crowd is really nice.... By the way, I think Mixon hit 13 home runs and batted over .400 his Junior year at Jasper...
