MLB Deciding Whether to Review Blown Call...
AJ25 replied to bullets13's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Maybe it's just because I'm still a 'young buck' compared to some people on this board, but I still believe it's one of the greatest loves a person can have in life. Obviously, I'm not married. So it's God, family, friends, and baseball.. Probably in the order. When I get married we can throw my wife after my friends. ;) But there is no greater love. Baseball builds character and sportsmanship. For those of you that are "Lost" by the game.. Quit watching MLB. Get ESPN-U and watch college kids play the game right. Go stop by a high school field and watch kids put everything they have into it. It's an old saying.. Baseball was made for kids, grown ups only screw it up. I couldn't find a better statement to describe the world of baseball. I'm 19, and I still couldn't love the game more. I get to the ball park at least 2 hours before every game just to soak it all in. Even in my summer games, I'll get to the field 2 hours before just to sit in the dugout and stare over the field and listen to the music coming from the pressbox. It's an amazing feeling. I'm sorry to know that there are people that have lost that feeling... Work to get it back, but either way.. The game will go on with or without you. If you can't love MLB, then go watch high school or college with kids that play the game with heart every second of every game. Remember, us college players don't get paid to play. ;) It's all for the love of it. -
Clay Hensley was a catcher when he came to Lamar.
Alex Moshier was a catcher when he went to SFA.. And he was probably going to get drafted this year if he was healthy, but I'm sure he'll get drafted as soon as he is back from his surgery. Catchers probably have the strongest and most accurate arms on the field. I've talked to quite a few catchers and all of them feel they could probably adjust to getting on the bump.
I didn't pitch at the college level but I did in high school and getting ahead in the count, spotting your pitches, staying low in the zone are important at any level of baseball. Mentally you have to be focused for any game (or atleast I did). Playing for one of the best coaches in the erea at the time. I know coaching is vastly important in the development of a pitcher. Our best pitcher played at Lamar back in the 80's. Hard for be to believe you don't think coaching is important for the success of a pitcher (no matter the talent). Especially when we are talking about the mechanics of a pitcher.
This has nothing to do with facing good teams like baseball25 is talking about. As a pitcher at the college level, I know I would feel much better about myself having faced great teams earlier in the year because I would know what to expect and how to react to certain situations. In Lamar's case, I'm sure most pitchers on staff would feel much better facing TCU and Baylor if they had played teams of that calibar in pre-conference because it wouldn't be anything new. Now they are facing top teams in the nation and HAVING to win when no one on the team (Mainly the pitchers) has faced anyone that good all their life. Coaching definitely helps, but ask any coach.. they can only coach you so much. Only YOU can get out on that bump and send the batter back to the dugout.

Update on the facilites The bleachers appear to be done. The concessions appear to be done for the most part. The Athletic complex is basically done on the outside, inside work being done now. They are beginning to work on the entrance gates on all four corners of the field. The suites are obviously underway as well. Coming along nicely!
-
They have begun laying down the tarp to cover the dirt for the final time. :) The tarping is the next step to having the turf down. They were about 1/3 of the way done covering the field until the storms came in.
Hopefully we will make him regret his decision. It probably comes down to not wanting to be in his hometown. A lot of kids want to go off to school. Can't blame him if that is the case.
SFA is much more of a college town with a college atmosphere. The facilities are top notch, and there is no drop off in education. He is guarnteed wins there, not to mention they play A&M this year so he will get scouted even more. I know everyone wants him at Lamar, but as of now he made the right decision.
Big-time programs visited these SLC teams 1. University of Arkansas at McNeese State 2. Rice, Houston, A&M at Sam Houston 3. Tulane, Alabama at SE Louisiana 4. UCLA, Oklahoma, Mississippi State at A&MCC 5. A&M, Baylor, TCU at Texas State
Arkansas at McNeese was a tourney. Rice and Houston came to Lamar as well, and A&M is EXTREMELY close to Sam. Tulane is 30 min from SE LA, and Alabama is a state over. Close drive. UCLA, OK, Miss St all played A&M CC at Whataburger Field.. Pretty easy to get teams to come when you play there. A&M & Baylor are pretty close to TX State.. I'm not sure how they got TCU. Point being.. These are all CLOSE drives for these big schools. Lamar isn't really close to any big name schools other than Rice and U of H, so that's why only they come. Lamar doesn't offer visiting locker room showers.. So when a big school can choose between coming down here for a single game and not even being able to shower before going back, or having a school close to if not equal with Lamar come to their place and save the drive.. They'll do that. Lamar has to go to those big names places because we're not close to big schools like other Southland schools are.
There it is...always have to get the jab in. I am glad that you were sitting in that meeting with the NCAA selection committee when they decided that Arizona who ended year ranked 28th and Baylor barely got in. What is it that you cannot stand about Lamar besides G. I was approached by someone on Monday about your posts. Enough already. Get a life or at least be happy and find something positive to say.
All he was saying was that he likes Lamar's chances a little better in this regional than another.. There's a lot more solid regionals than this one. I think Lamar can win it.

There is a big time Major League Pitcher that was given a second chance after doing something stupid. That second chance has changed his life.
Sure did. Was a class act before and after that mistake. One wrong decision on a certain day changed it all. -

I agree with Blum needing more playing time at third. I agree were stuck with Lee but he doesn't have to play. Give Micheals more playing time, can't hurt. Not one starter hitting 300. I still think it was a major screw up not trading Tejada in the second half of last season. It's hard to rate a coach with as little to work with as he has but I haven't seen much from him to be impressed with.
Blum can't hit lefties, Michaels hasn't ever hit more than .200 in a season. What is needed is a big influx of some young talent and that happens through the draft and trades. The astros haven't drafted very well in recent years and the majority of their trades have been trying to get players to"win now" and that has wired out horribly. Spending money isn't the problem they have one of the highest payrolls in MLB. It's how the money is allotted. Too much is tied up in too few individuals. Timmy P put the club in a big hole with his inability toanage the front office.
I've been saying for a long time that trades is the way to go. It's clear that the Astros do not draft well. It may be a little bit of a "homer" for me to say, but the Astros best draft pick in quite a while was taking Buna/Lamar alum Colin Delome in the 5th round of the 07 draft. He has steadily climbed his way through the organization in a short period of time, and will probably be ready for the bigs by the end of this year. Not many Astros prospects can say that. Since they can't draft well, they must trade to fix this organization. Make Roy Oswalt happy and trade him. You get a MINIMUM of 2 great prospects for him. If you wait until the deadline, you may get 3 great prospects. Berkman, you AT LEAST get 1 great prospect, maybe two. If you trade both of them, that's a minimum of 3 terrific prospects. That's 3 future position players or 2 future pitchers and a solid position player. They have to start trading. In my opinion, no one is untouchable. If the right team comes calling for a certain player and is willing to give enough, get rid of them all.
Need to bring Chris Johnson back up from AAA. Hes hitting around .370 and has a good glove
I say give the every day 3rd base job to Blum for at least two weeks and see how he does. Leave Johnson down there and see if he continues, and if Blum isn't doing awesome then you bring Johnson back up. Feliz needs to be a back up.

Pedro Feliz... Hitting .207 with 2 HRs. Bust Carlos Lee... Hitting .199 with 5 HRs. Sadly, we're stuck with this guy due to his contract Catching Position.. But Castro isn't quite ready in AAA. Back-up outfielders... Sullivan is our best option. Got a few guys in AAA that could be doing the same thing while getting experience for the future. Paulino... How is he still in the big leagues? Wesley Wright and Josh Banks are doing great in AAA. Berkman.. Slow start Oswalt.. Not happy in Houston, trade him. I'm sure I missed a few.

Build a upper deck on the East side and new press box on top with suites and turn the west side press box into suites. Could bowl the south endzone at the same level as the east/west stands until you get to the windows of the fieldhouse and then that section just high enough where it does not block the view from the offices. Then they could fill in the gaps between the Montange like they did at Boone Pickens Stadium at Oklahoma State.
That's a great idea as long as they turn the East side into the home side. You can't have the visitor side looking that much better!
If we support LU like we should, there will be no visitors side.
thats how i see it too............there should be so many LU fans at the games it shouldn't matter what side is the home side!!!
Hopefully fans show regardless of outcomes of games. This place has to be rockin every Saturday... The louder it is the more tough it will be for an opposing team to come in and play them.

Wade needs to stop being proud and realize that the Astros are and will remain the worst team in baseball until something changes.
