baseballguy, you are clueless, I sure hope your aren't townsend parents. Lumberton baseball is like little league because they don't have the college type players they use to have, bell is a very good pitcher but he can't carry the load the whole season, somebody else needs to step it up, you just can't lean on bell the whole yr like last yr.
Do have to agree with that.. There has only been two scholarship players in the last six years from Lumberton. But baseballguy, the district is full of them. We played teams in district with guys going to Big 12 schools, CUSA schools, SLC, and legit juco schools. At Townsend's age, he can't say he's done that through select ball. And that's what guys like Bell have to do week in and week out. When he gets on varsity, and is consistent like he was on JV, then you can get on here and talk about this select ball business.
-
They signed a 28 yr old Righty named Chacin who has spent the better half of his career in the minors from the looks of it. They consider him to be 'in the mix' for the starting rotation. Uh-oh. Jason Michaels also resigned, rounding off the 40 man roster. All they can do now is non roster invitees for spring training.
baseball guy.. quit hatin' because he plays select ball.. Pretty sure most guys on Lumberton's team do, as well as most teams around here. It's not an achievement, it's expected. And as for Lumberton being terrible, we play in one of the best districts in 4A baseball. and by saying select ball is better than highschool, you're saying there's guys out there that don't play highschool ball? Yeah, you're wrong. Sure, there's scouts there. Just like highschool games. In some districts I would agree with you that select is better, but we had 3 teams in our district go to the 3rd round or better just this past year alone. How many districts can say that? And if you're so against Lumberton highschool, then why is your son/cousin/nephew/brother playing for them? He hasn't been on varsity yet, which gives him plenty of time to transfer to a much 'Better' baseball school. Townsend is good, and Lumberton baseball is getting better bud, ask around. If you think you can do a better job then the coaching staff there, then you go to school and get your degree. Quit complaining about politics. To know whether there is politics or not means you're a former player or a parent who is pissed your son didn't get a chance. Little league is over. Again, this is nothing against Taylor, he does have talent.
baseball guy and rounder17, if you're from Lumberton then you know who I am.. There is no politics in Lumberton baseball. And if you're a parent, then no offense.. this isn't little league anymore. Zero politics. (Except in all-district voting ;)) Best kid will play, trust me. I played varsity all 4 years and didn't start the first two district games of my senior year because I had poor practices leading up to that week... The best players will play regardless of age or position. There also isn't poor coaching, it's un-motivated players. As for Townsend, wait until he gets to the varsity level to start tabbing him as the next 1st team all district pitcher out of lumberton, because that's what Bell was. How a kid pitches on JV for two years makes it very tough to tab how they will do at the varsity level. As for Beard, Mack, I will talk to him and let you know.
I agree those are good numbers for a first year. But lets see what he does a second year. Clay's second year he went 2-9 with a 6.75 ERA after going 3-1 1.59 Era with a no-hitter. I wish him the best of luck and agree he does have a strong year next year.
I can't beat that, Clay definitely had a soph. slump. Not everyone does though. We will see. All can agree though that another pitcher must be signed.
-
Who's getting better this year, Yanks? :)
-
Norris went 6-3 with an ERA at 4.5.. Sounds pretty good to me. And if Feliz does that, he won't play.. Blum hit 10 last year and Keppinger hit 7 homeruns of his own. Those are just about Feliz's stats from last year, so we will see. He brings a winning mentality over. And adds infield depth, I don't see a downside. Plus, he is a pull hitter and now plays at a field with the most hitter friendly left field.
What good is two good relief pitchers if you have no starting pitchers to get you to middle innings?
Oswalt, Wandy, and Bud Norris are three quality starters. Paulino throws 98 and has some of the best stuff around when he is on. Bazardo came up late in September and has great stuff and will contribute. Yes, they do need atleast one starter signed, but they have 3 quality with the potential of 5, right there..
I could be wrong, but my point was that LU probably couldn't pay Coker $200K like UTSA can. Having 25K+ students like UTSA and Texas State have definitely helps the athletic budgets at those schools. San Antonio is probably higher than Beaumont on most everyone's list of places to live too. But long term I'm bullish on the Beaumont area. I don't think expanding seating was ever planned for this phase of the stadium, but since they are spending close to $26 million instead of $18 to $22 million as first proposed means it should be a very nice 18K seat stadium, with SRO capacity of 20K+ plus. I'm very excited about the return of football. I think it'll help attendance in the other sports because more people in the area will be coming to the campus. Lamar still has a lot of work to do in and around campus, so I think this is only the start of good things at Lamar. Hopefully more development will occur around campus and the stadium to make the area more tailgating friendly. I think we'll eventually see the Montagne Center blend into the football stadium. I bet we'll see a total renovation of the Montagne Center when they add a practice facility on to it. Great things are coming, but it takes a lot of time and I do get impatient.
Don't we all. But after what I said, I'm very excited about everything going around campus too, and yes the Montagne hopefully will receive renovations too. Lord knows it needs it.. Lol.
Not sure if I would call them strategic. On the fence about the Pedro Feliz signing.
I don't see how you think there was no strategy involved. The second Valverde turned down arbitration, Lindstrom and Lyons, two of the better bullpen guys in the league, were picked up by the Astros. They also receive two compensation picks in between the first and second rounds for not getting Valverde. Think it's a pretty good deal to me. Not to mention how much cap space it opened. Feliz, he brings more power and run production alone than Blum and Keppinger could do together. Not to mention he brings in a winning attitude..

University of New Orleans to drop to Division III in 2010.

I think it'd be awesome for either. Show's Lamar can be next. Tx State gets it out of these two though -
Competitive Summer Leagues in Houston for College Players?
AJ25 replied to cleanup13's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Eagle. Can you send me numbers to any coaches? I haven't had a chance to talk with coach about it just yet, but figured contacting can't hurt. -
I hope you guys are smart enough to realize that Coker was definitely contacted. No, I have nothing to do with the school, nor do I know the AD, but you have to realize how many coaches were contacted, and that Coker MOST LIKELY was one of them. Coker most likely turned down any chance of coming here because of the recruiting and the area of San Antonio and the area around Beaumont. Granted our players are just as good, the coaching staff will see more players there. As for the stadium, who really cares? We've been begging for football for years, and it's finally here. Get EXCITED about football being back. Any special things with this stadium are PERKS. Win first, worry about the stadium next. Winners bring in money=Stadium improvement. Be thankful football is back, worry about the stadium after we win..

BOsox.. They made a few as you saw. Chris, what do you think of their moves? None of the players you mentioned were signed, but they got some good ones.

I have to beg to differ here shovelhead. There is a reason I started this thread, and it is because of the brightness of the Astros' future. Granted, no one knows everyone's name on this board, but if you happened to know mine and ask around.. I know my sports, especially the Astros. Here's their projected lineup and rotation at this point.. LF Carlos Lee - 25 HRs and 100 RBIs will do, even though it's not worth $19,000. It's ENOUGH CF Michael Bourn - Not many were better than this got last year RF Hunter Pence - Has been nothing short of a defensive gem and solid at the plate since he's been in the bigs. 3B Pedro Feliz - Started on both of the Phillies WS teams, and was solid with the Giants. He will help us greatly. SS Tommy Manzella - A defensive stud who brings YOUTH to this team. He will grow at the plate much like Elvis Andrus last year. 2B Kazou Matsui/Jeff Keppinger/Geoff Blumm - These 3 together or a healthy Matsui will DO until we find a solid replacement. 1B Lance Berkman - Nough said C JR Towles/JASON CASTRO - Towles will do okay until Castro is ready for the big leagues full time. MORE YOUTH. Rotation - Roy Oswalt, Wandy Rodriguez, Bud Norris, Felipe Paulino, Yorman Bazardo/??? Roy O has been one of the most consistent starters in the League the last 7 years, Wandy was great last year, Norris has a solid future, Paulino has some of the best stuff in the game when he's on. Bazardo is not known well, but people will know him this year. Bullpen - Newly renovated bullpen should be better as well. This isn't a lineup to keep us out of the bottom, don't kid yourselves. This lineup SHOULD win. We'll see if it does..
I'm pretty sure I saw him on campus during this past semester
You didn't.. He's been at Navarro. Coming back to Lamar. -
games like this is what is going to keep people from wanting to go.. I mean really, they're D3. 35 point victory atleast.

The Myth of the Athletic Baseball Scholarship

Ben Broussard was a supplemental round draft pick by Cincy, a "Senior Sign" after MSU, not out of high school. Fackler
I know, I played baseball with Ben. The guy didn't have his facts straight. First he wasn't the first pick, and second he played a little higher up than a couple of years of "semi pro".
McKeller was the player.... was first over all pick in independent ball....their is a draft after tryouts..... Which were held in Fort Worth..... He tried out up there in the Jacksonville league but was drafted by a team up north....(BANGOR - The Bangor Lumberjacks will sign the No. 1 overall pick in the Central League Draft, right hand pitcher Laine McKeller from McNeese State.) you play 2 years as a "rookie" (paid minimum) then are considered a free agent which can negotiate your own contract... as for "simi pro"..."Independent ball" its all the same. to me pro is pro. you get paid your a pro. But Gilligan did say he had no talent and could not play at the next level.....Have this from a really good source...... as for Ben, Lamar passed him up..."whole in his swing"?????????? Now Coach Fackler, I am just wondering how much of those 18 area players mentioned have scholarships??? In the past, Lamar did have area players but not many on scholarship. You may be right coach, things may have changed. I hope it has.......and you are right, still hold a grudge, but it is hard to forgive the past when you were one of the area players that was burnt. Former Player of yours (Fackler)
For whoever this is, the reason Gilligan most likely said mckellar had no talent was because of the fact that he threw 81 MPH when he walked on. He could hit a nat, that's why he was given a spot. When he left Lamar and put on weight, then he became a pitcher who could throw hard AND STILL hit spots. -
The Myth of the Athletic Baseball Scholarship

In most cases, you can actually get more money from an academic scholarship at a DI school than you can an athletic scholarship. Kids really need to focus on their grades very early on. -

If you could send that, it would be helpful. Thanks.
If your gonna do that, shouldn't you include some credentails as well?
EVery guy on that list knows their stuff. There is no way they could not help your child.
