  2. REGIONAL CHAMPS Mustang boys cruise to Region III title Van Wade Orange Leader HUMBLE — For the third time in four years, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs can say they own the Class 3A Region III Track & Field Championship title. Not only did the Mustangs win the region for the second straight season, they did it in record-breaking fashion at Humble High School Tuesday afternoon. The Mustangs scored 73 points, easily outdistancing second-place Tatum. “I couldn’t be happier for our kids,” said Mustang head coach Toby Foreman. “To set three new meet records on top of it. Wow! All I can say is wow!” The Mustangs will look to defend their Class 3A state title May 13-14 at the UIL State Track Meet at The University of Texas. “We treat our season in fours like the NCAA Basketball Tournament,” said Foreman. “There’s the regular season then you make the tournament at district. You move from that to the Final Four, which is the regionals and then you hope to make it to the championship game. Well, the kids feel like they’re in the championship again and they’re looking forward to next week.” The 400-meter relay team consisting of Justin Thomas, Trey Franks, Phillip Jones and James Haynes set a new Region III mark by winning in 41.08 seconds. The 800-meter relay quartet of Thomas, Jones, Franks and Mark Roberts set another meet record, winning with an impressive time of 1:26.12. Franks also set a new regional 3A record, winning the 100 meters in 10.45 seconds. Franks, on a mission to defend his 100-meter state title at the State Meet later next week, was thrilled with the individual win and more thrilled about the times the relay teams put in. “Last year, winning state was great, but I really wanted to do it again this with it being my senior year and all,” said Franks. “I wasn’t worried about getting off to a fast start in the 100. I sure didn’t want to jump the gun. About halfway through I kicked it in and thought I finished strong.” As for as the relay units? “I couldn’t be happier for all of the guys because we’ve put so much effort and work into it,” said Franks. “Coach Foreman felt we could come in here and set some meet records and we did. Our execution, as far as the handoffs, were nearly perfect. To leave here with times faster than we posted last year, that’s a good sign. We’ve just got to carry it through to Austin next week.” Jones, defending state 110-meter champion, made it look easy for the second year in a row. Jones won Tuesday’s event in 14.30 seconds, .11 seconds faster than second-place. The junior was thrilled with the victory. “It was pretty close until about the last two hurdles,” said Jones. “I got spiked once by the guy right next to me going over one hurdle and another bumped me in the chest but I was able to recover. Those last two hurdles, I had good form and I was able to finish strong.” Perhaps the biggest surprise came from the sophomore Thomas, who blazed to the 200-meter win in 22.05 seconds racing against much older and experienced competition. “It is an honor to represent West Orange-Stark and running against a lot of those veteran guys from the other schools,” said Thomas. “I really was able to get out of the blocks fast and that’s so key for me. I found a little extra burst there at the end and I came through.” Working with veterans like Haynes and Franks is also a big boost for Thomas. “Running with those guys every single day, you can’t help to get better every day,” said Thomas. “To run in those relays really helped me out and it made me loose when the 200 came around. I can’t wait for us to get to state to see what we can accomplish there. If we do what we’re capable of, I don’t think anyone can beat us.” In other action during the running finals Tuesday, Bridge City’s Tim Cude was seventh in the 1,600 meters (4:44) after placing third in the 3,200 meters Monday. Bridge City’s Kirby Shepherd was fifth in the 800 meters (2:02) and 10th in the 1,600 meters (4:48). WO-S’ Ed Ivory was sixth in the 200 meters (22.8) and teammate freshman Colin Janise was eighth in the 400 meters (51.4). Orangefield’s Kyle Fontenot was sixth in the pole vault, going 13 feet. WO-S’ Stephen Cook was eighth in the shot put (49-0). Orangefield’s Logan Moss was eighth in the discus. The WO-S girls 400-meter relay team consisting of Crystal Haynes, Johneshia Sims, Hannah Mobley and Danyale Thomas placed fourth in 49.13. Bridge City’s Meagan Shockley was ninth and Orangefield’s Lauren Williams 10th in the 1,600 meters. Williams was 10th in the 3,200 meters . Bridge City’s Bree Fontenot nabbed sixth in the 400 meters (1:02.4) and the Orangefield 1,600-meter relay team consisting of Hannah Walles, Rebecca Higginbotham, Kasidy Hayes and Vivian Luong took seventh.
