  14. Grand slam gives Pats win By Nathan Hague The Baytown Sun Published March 13, 2010 In Friday night’s third inning, the Goose Creek Memorial Patriots found themselves down 1-0 and they had yet to get a hit off Pearland Dawson’s pitcher Kevin Krahl. That was just a few hitters before Taylor O’Connor’s grand slam gave the Patriots a 4-1 lead and set up what eventually became an 11-3 win for the Patriots. The victory gives the Patriots a record of 8-4 on the season as they prepare for Magnolia West in the championship game of the Goose Creek Memorial tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday. “They (Magnolia West) played pretty good since they’ve been here,” GCM coach Chris Rupp said. “If we pitch and play defense, we’ll score some runs and win games. That’s what we’ve done here the last couple nights and hopefully we’ll continue that.” Cody Butler was the game’s winning pitcher. He allowed one hit and one earned run. “Cody played great; when he was in the zone, he was on. He’s tough,” Rupp said. “I think he’ll only get better with experience, too.” Memorial’s first hit came on a single to left hit from Jacob Wilburn. That was followed up by another single from Price Jacobs, who stole second. Chance Czerwonka was walked, and that loaded the bases to set up the grand slam by O’Connor. That was his second home run of the season, both of which were grand slams. “Taylor has done that a couple times this year,” Rupp said. “He really steps up and gets the big hit, and gets the barrel rolling for the team.” An inning and a half later, the Eagles fired back. A double from Zach Rodriquez brought Travis Duke home and started a scoring run. After singling to left, pinch hitter Greg Bourne tacked on the team’s fifth run and the inning closed with the Eagles trailing the Patriots 8-5. The Patriots got the remainder of their runs at the bottom of that same inning. Manny Galvan singled, took second on a wild pitch and ran home off another error. Jacobs and Dalton Going were both walked, and eventually brought home by a double from Chance Czerwonka that it made 11-3. The Patriots got a double play in the top of the seventh inning and then struck out Greg Bourne to seal up the win.
