  2. Errors doom Cards against Bulldogs Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — The Nederland Bulldogs made opening-night a long one for the Bridge City Cardinals. The Bulldogs got 12 hits and gladly accepted four Cardinals’ errors to win 11-4 at Cardinal Field. Cody Laird got the win on the hill for Nederland (1-0) as he hurled three innings and gave up one run on two hits with five strike outs. Forrest Zoch got the loss for Bridge City (0-1) after giving up four runs on four hits with four strike outs and one walk. Zoch did not benefit from the defense Laird did as Bridge City committed four errors in the first four innings. Nick Cardenas punished Bridge City pitching all night and was 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and a two-run homer with four RBI. The homer came in the first inning as Nederland quickly built a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals got their first run of the night in the third inning as Brandon Simoneax ripped a leadoff double and later scored when Zack Smith hit a double. Smith finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. He picked his second RBI up after striking out yet reaching first on a passed ball when Cameron Dishon scored. Matt Hicks later scored that inning when Dylan Mulhollen had a RBI groundout. Courtesy runner Jason Broussard, running for catcher Matt Menard, scored the Cardinals’ last run when Dishon had a RBI groundout. The Cardinals hope to turn around their fortunes this weekend at the Lumberton Tournament. print this story
  3. Woman killed by debris Comment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A woman died Sunday after being hit by a tire from a crashing dragster at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. The woman was watching a first-round Top Fuel run at Firebird International Raceway when Antron Brown's Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster went out of control on the strip and its left rear wheel came off. Alia Maisonet, a spokeswoman for the Gila River Indian Community, said the woman was airlifted to a Phoenix-area hospital for treatment and later died. Gila River emergency responders were among the first to respond to the scene. Maisonet said she didn't know the victim's name or hometown. "The entire NHRA community is deeply saddened by today's incident and sends its thoughts and prayers to the woman's family and friends," the association said in an e-mailed statement. Franki Buckman, the track's executive vice president, said Firebird International Raceway also is deeply saddened by the incident. Brown was released by the track medical staff, but went to Chandler Regional Hospital for further observation, according to a statement put out by Don Schumacher Racing before the woman died. The NHRA said Brown wasn't injured. "We're racers and we race and I'm ok," Brown said in the statement. "It all happened so quickly and I want to thank the NHRA Safety Safari for being there so quickly to help get me out of the car and also the track medical team for tending to me so quickly." The racing continued after the accident, and John Force advanced to his second straight Funny Car final before the session was postponed because of rain. Force, the 60-year-old star who ended a 40-race winless streak last week with his record 127th victory, will meet Jack Beckman on Monday.
  4. BC Chamber honors sports hero Tommy Mann, Jr. The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Steve Worster never knew that playing a game he loved would unite a community and have a lasting impact on so many people. He was reminded of that fact explicitly on Saturday night. Worster, a star running back for the Bridge City Cardinals state championship team of 1966, was recognized as the Bridge City Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 Citizen of the Year during the 2010 Annual Banquet on Saturday night at Bridge City High School. Worster, a friendly and very laid back person in public, was very humbled by the distinction bestowed upon him Saturday night. “I have a lot of difficulty accepting this award,” Worster said from the podium. “I just want to drag all of my old teammates up here with me because what we accomplished we did together.” The audience was treated to many stories of Worster, his youth and the state championship run in 1965 and championship winning team of 1966 by many well known and respected individuals, such as Glenn Pearson, Bill Godwin and Moe Litton. Worster, with a big smile on his face, couldn’t help but put in his own little jab at the trio of men who were part of his youth. “It would have been nice to hear all of these kind words 40 years ago,” Worster said amidst laughter from the crowd. Before returning to his seat, Worster parted with a heartfelt comment. “I’ve lived in a lot of different places over the years, and there’s no place like Bridge City,” he said. Worster was a key cog in the dominant Cardinals championship team of 1966, especially in the state championship game when he romped for four touchdowns and more than 260 yards against McKinney High School at Baylor Stadium. Not only was Worster a High School All-American while in Bridge City, he went to play football at the University of Texas, under Coach Darrell Royal, and helped the Longhorns and its potent wishbone attack to back-to-back national championships in 1969-1970. He was also a two-time All-American. In March 2009, only a handful of months after losing his home to Hurricane Ike’s storm surge like so many other Bridge City residents, Worster was named to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Worster still resides in Bridge City and enjoys daily life as a father and grandfather. Also on Saturday night, Ricky Land was recognized as the 2009 Bridge City Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassador of the Year. Land, a life-long resident of Bridge City, has spent much of his life helping others. He spent 30 years with the Bridge City Volunteer Fire Department before retiring. He worked for the Orange County Ambulance Service as a paramedic, and then with Acadian Ambulance Service. A humble man, Land is always willing to help others whenever possible, which is a key reason he was chosen for this award. “I don’t feel like I have done any more than anyone else has,” Land said as he accepted his award. “After the storm, we all had to come together. It takes a lot of team work to pull together and do what we did to bring Bridge City back. I’m very glad to be a part of that group.”

  12. Madisonville takes down Lady Cats, 52-35 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader TARKINGTON — Give the Orangefield Lady Bobcats credit - they never once let Madisonville plow right through them. No. 3 Madisonville held off Orangefield 52-35 Friday in the Class 3A Region III Area Round playoffs at Tarkington High School. Orangefield (22-11) got a game-high 15 points from lone Lady Bobcats senior Aimee Scales. The Lady Bobcats trailed 39-22 heading into the games' final eight minutes. Orangefield then had its best offensive period of the game, scoring 13 points in the fourth. The Lady Bobcats 13 points went to no avail as Madisonville also scored 13 points to keep Orangefield away from getting to close. Orangefield junior Marissa Wyatt scored 12 points in the loss while Kacy Juneau, who had a terrific game on defense, put in six points and Ashton Wagner finished with two. The Lady Mustangs (22-4) got 12 points from Brittney Smith. Madisonville won District 24-3A and is now headed to the regional quarterfinals. The Lady Mustangs were up 12-9 after the first period but then held Orangefield to six points in the second. Madisonville led 25-15 at the break and then outscored Orangefield 14-7 in the third.
